York, Sheffieldback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Excellent pub that was very busy on Friday night so it is obviously doing something right. Handpulls were Saltaire's Challenger Special, Abseil IPA from Black Iris Brewery, Abbeydale's Speculation and Horrable Skellington and Springhead's Drop O' the Black Stuff with ciders being Addlestones Cloudy, Westons Old Rosie and Pure North's Fusion. Smart décor, quick accurate service and attracts both sexes and all ages.

It's been totally refurbished in what, I must agree is a very pretentious style for what was once just a good old traditional pub. But the service was friendly and the one ale I had was very well kept.

This place is fine! Beer is good quality. Yes, it does cocktails and fancy wines and is aiming for the continental 'Grand Cafe' but you can still just pop in and get a pint and a friendly chat from bar staff or regulars. I had food and it was pretty good, but restaurant prices, but I did get restaurant service. Beer was local and spot on. I will be back with friends.

GOOD NEWS: This has stayed a pub!
BAD NEWS: It is totally pretentious and up its own arse.
So the pub was saved, it has not become yuppie flats or a shop. Totally new layout so if you remember the old York prepared to be disorientated when you walk through the door. This pub now serves food..... but unless you think �6 for a bowl of soup or �10+ for a basic main course is fair game your wallet is going to want to run for the hills. As for beer; the price is reasonable hovering at somewhere around �2.80 a pint, a range of ales which look like they probably rotate and still served in pint pots.
CANDLES?!- thats enough on the decor. Now for my major bugbear: We attempted to go in Friday night for a drink, first of all we were stopped by a bouncer who asked for our ID. OK this might be acceptable in the city centre, but this is a quiet suburb and we'd just popped out for a quiet drink, anyway ID accepted yadda yadda. We were then told we could not go in as my friend was wearing tracksuit bottoms(he was by no means chavvish looking nor were they dirty), now otherwise we just looked like normal students, but come on!? This is a pub on the edge of town, it is not some inner city posho wine bar... lest that is what the new management intend it to be?
Teach the pretentious buggers a lesson, avoid it, drive it out of business, bring back our old nice friendly York.

Sadly no more, closed its doors on the 16th December 2009 after 150 years of being a pub. To be turned into a shop and yuppie prisons upstairs (typical). Only starting going into this pub after it stopped being a 'Scream' pub and it was great everytime. Good choice of beer, interesting punters and traditional pint pot glasses. On the last week they were selling all the fixtures, fittings and even the glasses, and the place was rammed. It will be sadly missed.

Very good. If a pub get its wrong, like they did with my bateman's xxxb today (old, sour), they should replace it without quibble. Which they did. Not everywhere does. Quirky interior, lots of books and games and a very tatty simpsons pinball. Food, beer garden, music all feature. I hope it does well, but I hear it does not from the sheffield forum. Get yourselves down there!

I'd hardly call this a "traditional pub" (except for the jugs instead of glasses) - the lilac coloured walls don't add anything. But it was friendly enough and the beer was good.

All previous reviews of this pub should be wiped. A former O'Neills and Scream pub, it has been restored to its former glory. A huge refurbishment in 2008 turned The York into a proper pub with a decent selection of real ales and a vintage interior and selection of rooms. It would be difficult to fully get across how much this pub has changed - check out their website at the-york.com. Anyway, I went in last night expecting not to like it as this pub has been taken over by those who own the Dove and Rainbow in town, which I dislike and often find has a poor selection of ales. It is a rock pub too, which isn't my style at all. Anyway, I was very pleasantly surprised by this traditional pub with a decent selection of 6 ales, including a mystery ale. I had the Ghost on the Rim which was in sensational condition and is the best pint I have had in 2009 so far. Nice dart board, fruit machine and plenty of space - I will be returning.

Rather loud, but a fair selection of beers at nice cheap prices make it my second local, next to the Tavern, conveniently situated just round the corner. Not bad, it must be said. I have yet to sample the food, myself, but I should imagine it's on a par wit Wetherspoons fare. Nice friendly staff.

A 'Scream' branded pub, great student local in the heart of the student community, although popular with the locals too due to the friendly staff and fun atmosphere. Great for meeting up after lectures, before heading out on a night out, watching sport on the big screen, or chilling out with mates.
Its also cheap too with all the usual offers that you expect from Scream, but with added extras!
