The Newton Arms is the sort of pub tourists ignore; not near major sites, plain looking, and catering to drinkers rather than eaters & coffee sippers. There is food & it looks tasty, but most punters on my visits over the years have been local workers & sports fans, necking pints & bantering with the bar people. A good pint of Adnams Bitter (3.70); last year's visit I had several of them watching a British Lion's test from Australia with a fantastic crew of rugby fans.

No great beer list but a relaxed crowd and away from the busy Kingsway. Gem

Ordinary looking pub but the food was good and the manager was very nice to my young son and his friend. Had a good pint of Adnams bitter.

Doesn't look much from the outside, but a proper boozer inside. Sky sports. Slightly old, grumpy bar staff catering for the masons again

Ok, lets face it, this isn't the most prettiest of pubs from the outside but be pateint. Its in a good Central London location bordering both Holborn and Covent Garden and its secluded enough not to be to out of the way or to be swamped with tourist. Its good for watching the match as its roomy and you dont have to strain your neck to get a good view. i thought that the draught ales and bitter have been kept well and the staff are nicely turned out, white shirts, neat ties, nice & traditional. I've only ever gone there on Saturdays so I cant say too much but I do wish the bloody Freemason would not go there en-mass. Each Saturday, after a lot of hand shaking and trouser lifting, they decend on this place and block the entrance with black briefcases. Apart from that, its nice

I liked this pub in a nice traditional old fashioned pub way.

It's quite basic in design and furnishings, but cosy and somehow pulls off a relaxing chilled out environment.

Good old rock tunes being played through the speakers ... ELO, Elvis etc.

The staff were are really friendly and helpful ... I like the barmen (who according to a previous review, have worked here for 15 to 20 years) dressed in shirt and ties ... again in an old fashioned / traditional manner.

I sampled the chilli con carne and chips, which was decent enough for a fiver. Portion was very generous and I struggled to finish it all.

The only down side is there isn't a massive selection of drinks on offer. Only 2 ales and sadly as is the norm for 93% of UK pubs these days, the only cider was Wrongbow.

It's better than many pubs in this area and since my office is 20 yards away, I wouldn't hesitate on lunching here in the future.

Nice to see pubs like this can still hold their own whilst competing with the pretentiousness of the nearby chain "bars", All Bar One and Slug and Lettuce.

Not the prettiest of pubs but a good, old-fashioned friendly service from landlords who know their stuff. Not a very wide selection of beers, but as one of the few places that doesn't get packed with tourists and Covent Garden shoppers in this area, that's not so much of a concern as finding a nice quiet pub! That said, it can get busy when there's a football match on as they have screens up.

Staff and management really understand the meaning of customer service! Good Adnams and (and Courage Best?) and the usual array of lagers.

The Newton looks like an estate pub wedged under a 1960s office block.

There is nothing too spectacular about the interior but there are plenty of TVs for footy watching - it was showing both Champs League games when I was in. I suspect it draws its clientele either from local offices (mostly suits when I was in) or sports watchers as there aren't too many places to watch a game in the immediate vicinity.

Ok for one but I couldn't really recommend for an evening.

A super pub, not historic, but inevitably well run and serving excellent Adnams. The only pub that I use from time to time that has faces behind the bar that have been there for years [Mick over 16 years, and Finbarr the governor over 20 years] Food is always basic but good value.

Immaculatly clean boozer with fast efficient service. All good, very good. Disturbing comment by previous poster though. Have not seen any evidence of this myself and never hope to either. But from my experience, the best standards all round in London.

A good honest boozer, really quick service. Busy on Friday and Saturday nights. Well kept beers, sky sports. Hard to fault.

Courage Best and Adnams Bitter on. The Adnams was 3 per pint, which now seems to be the Central London going rate for an average pint of beer. But it tasted OK. Seating comprises plastic covered settles and tables, plus high stools around ledges by the windows. The layout of this pub remains unchanged since it was one of my regular haunts back in the 70s. This is another one of those OK but nothing special pubs. OK for a pint if youre passing, but not worth going out of your way for.

I've only started using this pub recently after having given up on The Plough. Beer's good with friendly and efficient service from english barstaff who actually understand your order!

Surprisingly quiet at 6pm, when just around the corner the Princess Louise was heaving. I suppose that it is difficult to compete on price with a neighbouring Sam Smith's pub, but the Adnams here is excellent.

Great place with friendly staff and good service. When visiting london we usually always manage a beer or two here. My wife says the ladies needs re-decorating but then nowhere's perfect.

The Adnams here is as good as any pub in Southwold and I've yet to find a better one in London! Its not a fancy pub but well run and always the same friendly faces behind the bar. Food is just above findus crispy pancakes but is as cheap as the beer. The wine is well priced too albeit plonk. Good place to meet up.

This is a decent pub for a quick drink. Great barman, friendly locals and the beer is always good.

Bit pokey so I wouldn't stop in for a big session but well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Not bad at all in the Newton.Lively crowd that reminded me of a 70's atmosphere.mind you it was getting on for closing time....Good boozer.it had the feel of a "local"
ginner - 30 Apr 2007 20:58
Adnams was drinkable, not a bad place.
jackvervacke - 26 Feb 2007 18:45
I didn't sample the beer in here; instead I had cokes which were served by the bottle and lukewarm. Despite its location this is something of a local's pub with, as RogerB says below, the ambience of an estate pub. That said, I thought the service and atmosphere was friendly and I'd pop in here again to try the beer.

As one of the aforementioned 'geezers' I can confirm that this boozer is most certainly one of the most entertaining establishments in the area. A little known fact is that Mick (Rupert) the barman recently won the prestigious 'Camden Barman of the Year Award'! Their lunchtime offerings are a post-hangover lifesaver, the quality of the beer never drops below superb, and - apart from the lack of beer garden - I haven't got a bad word to say about the place.

What a place. Felt like I was in that programme 'Life on Mars,' as a trip to the NEwton was like stepping back in time.

Unashamedly bland decor and full of 'blokes' and 'birds' (well mainly blokes.) who seemed to think they were chirpy London geezers best suited to an episode of 'The Bill' about 15 years ago.

Possibly some of the best entertainment I have had in years.

Modern ground floor office block pub that would not look out of place on a council estate. The interior is, at best, boring and uninteresting but there is something about its no nonsense approach that is strangely acceptable. It does offer a decent, cheap but basic meal and a good view of the footy on one of the 2 large plasma screens. They also serve a good pint of Adnams although the beer range is as standard and bland as the pub. Little in the way of character but very functional.
RogerB - 14 Apr 2006 20:22
Caught me by surprise. From the outside, looks like a modern, not particularly interesting place. Found a friendly staff, good sports on several screens, and a good number of outside tables. Was able to sit outside and watch the Ashes at the same time with a well-drawn pint. Tried to visit again on a Sunday but it was closed.

Got in there at 14:00 on a Friday, so very quiet. Sure it gets busy at other times. It was a sunny day and appears to be the only pub around that outside seating available (due to it not being crowded). Real ale is Adnams and the bar staff were efficient and friendly.
graley - 24 Jun 2005 15:43
Blinding cheap stodgy food!
