Duke, Deptfordback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
This pub has the feel of a modern hipster style place, but the clientele is mixed, including students from the nearby halls of residence, workers from nearby offices etc and locals from the modern estates that line Creek Road these days. They have a good selection of Real Ales (usually 3, including ones from local breweries) and the beer seems to be well-kept. They also have a good range of continental beers and a reasonably-priced wine selection. Food is fairly simple and limited in range, but the burger and chips I had was decent. The prices are fairly standard for the area. They have regular music sessions and a quiz night, so seem to do plenty to get the punters in. There are a few tables outside at the front and a 1st floor roof terrace. The quirky furniture and largely open-plan interior may not be to everyone's liking, but it's a comfortable and friendly place to sup a pint or two whilst listening to local jazz bands and the like.

Strange that this place hasn't had a review in nearly 3 years. It's not perfect, but doesn't deserve an average score as low as 3.4. Yes, many traditionalists will find it a little too open-plan and a little too expensive, but to be fair they keep a decent pint and the fairly simple food menu is not particularly expensive for the area and the food is good. On our visit, they had Landlord, Tribute and Trelawny (both St Austell ales) on draught and plenty of choice for lager drinkers including Kozell. I had a squid and crayfish saffron risotto which was very good, whilst the OTS had a falafel wrap which she enjoyed. My only complaint was that the barman didn't seem to understand that the pint line on the glass equated to the top of the glass and an inch of froth doesn't count! Giving people short measures is one way to ensure they don't come back.

Finally manged qualm my curiosity pop into the recently refurbished Duke for a pint this evening, but alas I was left aghast within 30 seconds! I could not help but be impressed at to the massive improvements to this formerly dilapidated pub upon entering this now clean-cut establishment. Eagerly I headed towards the bar in hope of the offer of purchasing something special beer-wise. However, the beers on offer were very ordinary run of the mill mass produced products, very disappointing considering the attempts in gastro-pub style. Disappointed, I thought OK maybe I have got the image wrong and it is just another regular pub, possibly focused on the local student population and decided to order a fail-safe pint of Taylor's Landlord bitter. Upon receiving the pint from a very polite young lady I was completely gob-smacked by the extortionate price of �3.40!! I paid for my drink bewildered and headed towards the end of the bar to make the most of my extremely expensive purchase. On the wall next to me was the drinks price list. The most prestigious draft beer on offer was from Europe's largest brewery, Heineken at a whopping �3.80 a pint!! Scanning down the outrageously price list for mediocre drinks I had to, pinch myself as I thought I was up in Covent Garden or something. Also absent was a decent wine list (no idea on prices) and the food appeared quite expensive with a roast advertised at over �10. I downed my pint, which was actually very good, and left before my wallet was emptied in the blink of an eye.
Obviously, the brewery/owners have very clearly not done their homework on a whole plethora of decisions for their investment around the style/image/potential customers. The basics being; the local population, the location, the competition, the products, to name a few. Why would anybody want to go there with Greenwich such a short distance? It simply DOES NOT have the most important aspect of entering contemporary hospitality, a UNIQUE SELLING POINT!
Customers have an enormous choice of places to go in the area covering the full spectrum of the pub market and all at prices much more realistic to what experience/ambience they offer. Moreover, Canary Wharf is just over the river where many pubs and bars are reducing their prices to attempt to stimulate trade in the current environment! Sadly, I feel The Duke will not last long and the investors need to reassess their ability to break into hospitality trade.

Deptford's first gastropub and a mighty fine place it is too. A beautiful, refurbishment of a previously dilapidated 18th century pub that had been the victim of a number of cheapo refits. My partner and I were literally the first customers through the door and we found a very warm welcome. Will be back soon to try the food and the real ale (which had only just been delivered, though the pints of Heineken really hit the spot!).

Re-opens on 8th October. I will be there!

Currently closed for renovation as it has been taken over by the couple who turned round The Dartmouth Arms in Forest Hill and The Dolphin in Sydenham. From reading the planning application it will be another full-on gastropub conversion and will be a much needed boost to pubs in the Deptford area.

used to go in here when I lived in Deptford,used to get a lot of students,decent enough place to have a few pints

After months of being closed it has now inexplicably reopened. Possibly under new management.

Appears to have gone out of business. Blinds have been down for months.
