Young's pub that has a nice location on the banks of the river. I'd imagine location is its main selling point. Young's Bitter & Cityscape was supplemented by St Austell Proper Job. My Cityscape was nothing special. Probably best visited in the summer.
Two pints of Ordinary which where just that how ever I thought the glasses where oversized, oh no we got a couple of serious short measures. Voted with our feet
Location, location, location = Expensive, expensive, expensive
Exploits its position to hike the beer prices up, when you can get served that is. Good for the Putney posing brigade.
Very corporate, but pleasant enough. Nice on weeknights, with plenty of seating indoors and out. Perhaps a little too crowded on weekends, as you would expect given the great location, but that's just a matter of taste. Never had a problem with food, but nothing special. Standard London pricing on drinks. Pleasant, competent staff. All in all not much to criticize.

Had a lovely pint of Young's Bitter but was disapointed that there was no Special on offer. Lovely setting for a pub, right on the river but 3.10 a pint is a bit too expensive for my liking.
Was excited enough to be beside the river on Boatrace Day. The weather was changeable yet dry enough to stand outside among a sea of blazors and flat caps.
The Boathouse had gone to a lot of trouble for this day and I think it paid off. Had the most delicious burger I 've tasted in ages and by having the additional outside bars we were served quite quickly.
Obviously for ales you had to go indoors, if you dared, as people were wedged in and probably gasping for air. I did not however venture thus far, and remained in fresh aired bliss. The bands were truely fantastic and we could watch from outside and all in all, the team put on a good day, only negative being far too many people, which signifies what a hit it was!
Went here after work a few weeks ago. Beer fine, food awful. Waitresses and staff all really nice but let down by the awful food.
Was out with the wife walking round Fulham today. Got to lunchtime and she wanted to find somewhere nice to eat a sandwich with a view of the river. Whereas all I wanted was a decent pint. Then came across The Boat House and it looked like it might satisfy both. And as we managed to get a table on the upstairs balcony with the river view, and they had Deuchars IPA on, we were both happy. The upstairs area had two hardworking staff running around providing table service although they were slightly let down by the kitchen, as it took over 30 minutes to come up with two sandwich platters and I wouldnt have said the pub was that busy. However when they did turn up I cannot fault the quality. Can also confer with the comment that it attracts Rahs. Braying loudly seemed to be the standard method of communication for one group of young ladies. Dont they teach the art of gentle conversation at Finishing School now? Anyway in conclusion, not a pub I would choose to have a session in, but for a place to have a break and a decent snack and a pint, the experience was good.
We visited the boathouse with a group of 10 friends for what we hoped would be a pleasant pub lunch. The staff seemed helpful enough, however our orders came at inconsistent intervals. Secondly a meal came out that was incorrect (the wrong fish-dish) and the waitress attempted to coerce my friend to take it instead of what he ordered: "it will be a forty minute wait otherwise". Such contempt for the customer to punish them for your mistakes - fish takes a couple of minutes to cook and a pub's screw-up should be rectified first!!!! ARgh! Then we complained about the inconsistent serving and screw up and the manager decided to excuse the kitchen for being busy - like a customer cares about the busy-ness of the kitchen. Then he offered nothing to make up for the mistake - and promptly left when he had been of no help and hid from us for the rest of the meal until we left. I won't be coming back, in fact I will make a point of telling everyone I know not to go there and if I walk past I will mention the sorry experience to anyone walking towards it's doors. Avoid at all costs until they fire the manager and learn to treat customers nicely
3.50 for a pint of bog standard lager ouch!!!
Youngs Ordinary, Tribute and Bombardier are also available from a very nice barmaid.
There is outside seating which looks out to the river, but the quality seats are at the top by the window (see picture above).
Its a shame that the pub itself is so bland and its definitely not worth the extortionate prices.
Found the drinks very expensive, plus the fella behind the bar got my order wrong, leading to minor embarassment all round. The place was full of suits and 'rahs' when I went. Completely characterless. Didn't stay long.
We ate out at the Boathouse on a week night and were terribly disappointed in the quality of food. The burgers we had were certainly not worth nearly 14 (GBK down the road is much better value for money). My father-in-law ordered a side of veggies (in season) and all he got was a bowl of green beans.
On top of that, the gents upstairs were out of order so a trek to the basement didn't make things better.
Doubt I'd go back there for a meal. Pity as the view is wonderful. An opportunity going amiss me thinks.
Visited late lunchtime on Saturday. Ultra-modern Youngs pub with (IIRC) three real ales. The ordinary bitter was 2.60 a pint which is reasonable nowadays. I took my beer upstairs and sat in the upper bar to enjoy the fabulous view over the Thames to Fulham. There was room to sit at that time (2 p.m.). The clientele seemed to be youngish. There was a refreshing lack of riff-raff, possibly due to the absence of televisions.
"It's on the river, it's always jammed and it's got fit staff." Well Coopy thinks it's seventh heaven...wow.
I went a couple of Friday nights ago, then again on the Sunday. Nice location, the staff were friendly enough, chairs a little lacking for those wearing heels (moi). However the biggest disappointment was the ladies bathrooms. Friday night they were a mess with only one cubicle of four actually having any loo paper, and one of two soap dispensers was empty. Should I read anything into it that it was still empty on Sunday? I'd go again, but be wary of the bathrooms.
It's on the river, it's always jammed and it's got fit staff. That's all anyone needs to know. If you want a quiet pint of ale in an old man's boozer, go up to The Whistle and Flute or The Bricklayers and moan about everything in the company of Mr Prague.

Naff. Great location wasted!
Ah, ya just gotta love the view in this place - the riverside is nice too but i'm talking about the talent! both at & behind the bar, I thought i'd gone to heaven. Great buzzing atmosphere on the weekends - nice and chilled during the day, I hear the foods great too. met the landlord here too, great craic, still got time for you even if hes running around. A great allround pub thats easy on the eyes.
I love this pub. I agree with the comment that it could be described as a large window with some seats, but I like the large window being there so we can all appreciate the fantastic view! I haven't been in the area for a couple of months, but the last Saturday I was there it was so heaving that if it wasn't for the fact I was meeting friends I might have not gone in. It would have been a big mistake; despite being so busy the atmosphere was great; everyone was really friendly. The staff were busy, polite and efficient and we were very pleasantly surprised by a brilliant live band that played.
Call me a curmudgeounly old personage but I failed to see the attraction of this place. It's basically a large window with some seats in it (as you can tell from the picture on this website). True, I visited on a saturday night when the charm quotient was likely to be at its lowest and the body count at its highest, but its appeal was lost on me. It's basically too contrived, too knowing - you feel like you are too obviously being manipulated. "We've built a big window so you can see the river and we're going to charge you 3.50 a pint for the privelege." Also the much vaunted drop-dead gorgeous frippet behind the bar seemed sadly absent. The pub that charm forgot.
I like this one. Only been there twice, a Friday and a Saturday night. Great atmosphere, very very busy, full of beautiful people, sexy staff, low lighting, just nice.
Great pub; good beer. Can't do much about how busy it is. I'd agree with the view that it's the best in Putney, though haven't sampled the food.
New favourite boozer in Putney. Being spread over 3 floors is nice....more stairs to fall down after six stellaaaas! Loos are rubbish. Can put the London beer price mark up towards sortin them out.
We were here on Saturday for my friend's engagement party. Absolutely wonderful venue, great service, lovely staff and a great atmosphere. There was no hassle and lovely people customers around us. Nobody hurried us at the end of the night even though we were still straggling more than an hour after closing. Highly recommended. Only downside was an enormous hangover all day yesterday.

Must wear a suit to get served in this bar.... Normally pretty good but the waitress last night couldn't see me standing infront of me, sorry for the bad review, i like this place, will come straight after work next time...

Hi, I'm Oisin, the general manager of The Boathouse,
If anyone has any pub-specific comments about our service, atmosphere, food or drinks or wants a reservation, please feel free to contact us through this site or the Boathouse website, link above. Thanks for all the comments.

This place is bar far the best in the south, if not all of london. it does tend to get very busy... but the staff.. (all of whom seem to very good looking, my female friends will defo be back again, along with me as the girls are hotties also) always seem happy to serve, and do it quickly! didn't have food, but it looked very good indeed. a trip back is on the cards for sure. check it out if your in the area. good music and drink give it a great atmosphere for a night out.
Yuppie yuppie yuppie! but then the area itself has gone that way
Best place around for miles. With staff like that why would you want to go anywhere else! (Oh, the food was lovely). Who does the music?- couldn't have picked a better playlist myself! Almost worth getting on the bar for a boogie (with ceilings that high i'm sure it's crossed a few minds)...

Great youngs beer, very friendly staff, beautiful views from upstairs,9/10.
hahaha, desperately needed a hair cut!? i thought i was on beerintheevening NOT a hairdressers forum. you might hurt our hairy barmens feelings. i like the anonymous touch as well, i heard cowardice is really in this season
Can't agree with everyone else sorry. Was in here last week and was "served" by the most miserable bar man ever. He just didn't seem to care and he desperately needed a hair cut!!!!

Unbelievably fit barstaff, worth walking 10 miles over broken glass just to have a look.
anonymous - 14 Aug 2006 19:27 |
Love this place. Have been a couple of times for Saturday lunch and ended up staying for the rest of the evening. The restaurant is great, I would highly recommend.
This pub must be one of the busiest in London. I live quite close and I love it. If you want to eat, come at Lunchtime or early in the evening, the food has really improved and is excellent. The burgers upstairs can not be beaten in London in my opinion. The staff have all changed recently, and the moody can't be arsed ones have all been replaced by pretty people who really care about you. It does get really mobbed on sunny evenings but at least you can always get served. Downside is that you can only drink outside in a small roped off area and if you try to break outside you get herded back in. Expensive but always very very good, staff are brilliant.
anonymous - 28 Jul 2006 11:51 |
I've been going to this pub on and off since it opened. It's gotten better lately but it still suffers from the problem common to all Youngs pubs - it's too expensive. 3.30 for a pint of 1664 is just extortionate! The staff make up for it but the fodd brings it down again. How long does it take to get a plate of chilli? Surely an hour is too long? It came lukewarm and on a freezing plate with parmesan shavings on top! Parmesan? On a chilli? Good pub to go to in summer but the expense and food let it down.
Great pub in a fine location, but 3.10 for a pint - and for a Foster's at that? Great place to meet for an evening out, but too expensive to hang around.
What a great pub! Came in here beginning of may and it was heavin! The Staff were really on the ball. Despite the fact the pub was rammed the staff were really workin hard to get everyone looked after. Makes a change from pubs avec bar staff that see a crowd and groan!
anonymous - 14 May 2006 23:21 |
Heaving with Fulham supporters because of its location for home games - Al Fayed put back a few Fosters before the big game with his peeps when I was there. Still, it seemed like a great pub that would have plenty of action on a sunny day with its large outdoor area and big windows with views to the river. Lots of bar staff for service.
I spent an evening in here about six months ago and was underwhelmed, primarily due to some rather ignorant and infuriatingly slow barstaff and the fact that there was a toilet attendant trying to palmolivise me every time I needed to return my beer to whence it came. Judging by my recent visits , the new management seem to have injected a well-needed bit of common sense to the place. The top room has been made less formal allowing access to both drinkers and diners (and presumably allowing for more than two sittings per evening), the staff flirt in a most satisfying fashion and look to be enjoying their job, nobody swipes your drink at two minutes past eleven and you no longer get hassled in the facilities.
This place is definitely on the up. If you were turned off in the past, drop in and see if you can spot the difference.
I've visited a number of times over the last few months and noticed a lot of improvements in my last visit - just last weekend - the food, drink and staff all seem to have changed for the better. Could it be that finally this place will live up to it's potential?

i was in this pub on saturday night and had a wonderful time. i was in there with friends and we were well looked after. friendly and competent staff we had food, the steak pie was spot on perfect. will be coming here again thats for sure!

I had my engagement party in the Boathouse on Saturday and cannot say enough good things about it. My group was well looked after, enjoyed a fantastic night and are already looking forward to our next night out there. The atmosphere and location are great, staff are friendly and the management took particularly good care of us. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
Beer was in good order when I visited last night, not so cheap though. Was a bit surprised when, asking for my pint to be topped up, I was asked how long ago the beer had been poured, and when I pressed the barman he said what he meant was 'have you drunk any of it?'. Bar staff reading magazines rather than serving, and seemingly not understanding the order in which to serve people waiting at the bar, all add up to pretty poor experience.
Can't comment on the food, but our visit wasn't as bad as some of the other reviews. OK, the beer wasn't cheap, but it was in excellent condition and it is a great location. Chrome and glass isn't my ideal pub and it was a fairly young and earnest crowd in on Saturday evening, but it was pleasant enough. Service was good, but this was early evening, so maybe we hit it too early to see problems. All in all, by no means the worst we've been to, but admittedly not the best Young's pub.
so pretentious and expensive, don't bother.
Have revised the opinion below based on the experience of friends who visited yesterday. As a bar it's OK. Still expensive, still none of the clientele wearing Chavski shirts. However it must be run by a bunch of complete oxygen thieves; food and service was utter cr*p. Over an hour's wait for a sandwich, which when it finally arrived, turned out to have been made with stale bread. Cheers then. Considering that this is more of a bar/restaurant than a pub, you might think the owners would want to get the basics right. A crying shame really.
5 out of 10 for the bar, 1 for the food. Do the maths, and sort yourselves out.
ok, great outside and if you want a drink, but not impressed when you are knicked downstairs because the bar staff want to clean up, even if there are no seats to sit downstairs and after spending over 250 in the group you would expect to sit for the remaining of the evening, so we will not be going back.
Looks great, but is really quite dire. Youngs pubs are normally the best of any chain, but this one is pretty dreadful. Toilet attendants should be banned!
OK-ish. Looks great from the outside, but like an All Bar One inside. Expensive, not enough seating. Happily not too many people in Chelsea shirts.
expensive and crap
Dreadful.
There is a man in the toilet interfering with you, squirting soap etc and wanting a tip. This is awful. Why do pubs do this? I've not spoken to single person who doesn't find this irritating.
We had to leave as people in my group need the loo and wouldn't go down there again!
Bad accoustics meant shouting at the person next to you also.
The outside is nice by the river though.
alanm - 15 Aug 2005 10:43 |
Slightly expensive, but pretty as a picture.
The perfect place to take a date you wanna impress. Food is good and atmosphere is comfortable, especially in the upstairs restaurant and balcony.
Nice fit out but poor internal areas and very slow service are annoying. Good quality Youngs as you would expect.
BenEd - 28 Jul 2005 11:26 |
Gret pub and great food except for the hour long wait for it!!!!!!!!!! bar staff said it's took so long becasue head office would not pay for a proper kitchen. At least its back to normal Young's beer here unlike the Founders Arms in Central London
I went on friday night and liked it. Very Busy but the location is great. Wooden floors and basic decor, not much seating. Will be perfect in the summer looking over the river. Didn't find ordering too much of a problem despite it being rammed with people on the ground floor. Haven't sampled the food. Would go again.
First of all I'd like to say I'm only 18, and I'd chose the Duke's Head over this anyday. Another example of Young's pandering to the South London yuppies again, in an attempt to turn Putney into the new South Bank. As said before you will not find a seat, and it will take you ages to have the pleasure of ordering from the arrogant and impolite staff.
anonymous - 22 Nov 2004 20:05 |
It's tedious. Lovely location and all that jazz, but it feels like a show room if you're not in the restaurant-type bit at the back. Full of young dullards.
anonymous - 1 Nov 2004 14:22 |
Nice location (river views) and reliable Young's beers, very busy though and not enough seating - especially for the British summer rains! DREADFUL food, at least the starters were - I couldn't face a main course after that.
Buzz - 18 Sep 2004 14:14 |
Great pub! I have only been on a Friday & Saturday night and the crowd have been great. Awesome eye candy for the lads to look at while chatting over a few pints. Definitley worth a stop if in the area.
David - 18 Aug 2004 15:47 |
This is the type of pub to end a hot summers night. Good food, good beer and an excellent location. The manager is a great guy, he takes pride in his beer and food. Yes it's busy, why? Because it's a great place for anyone from 18 - 100. The only problem I can find is that it dosen't show any rugby!
Richard Brierley - 2 Aug 2004 18:26 |
Nice location but the staff are rude and the food is absolutely appalling! Don't go there to eat and only go there on a week-end night if you don't mind queueing for hours for your drinks!
M - 30 Jul 2004 14:19 |
Well tell Gary that there are plenty of over 30s in there too! Bar staff were quite arrogant when I was there, but did get a seat upstairs. Always busy (even on Monday's). Bit more sterile than the ROcket Bar next door. Good crawl along the River to the Duke's Head, and the other way to the Cat's Back. Dont fall in.
Lawrence - 27 Jul 2004 15:47 |
Nice location, if you like being that close to Fulham. Decent selection of Young's beers and several bottled lagers. Impossible to sit down unless you book a table in the upstairs restaurant or arrive 5 minutes after it opens. Outside terrace for sunny afternoon/evening drinking (several mildly famous people live in the building next door).
burnsy - 21 Jul 2004 12:37 |
Wonderful venue, food and concept - but aweful aweful service - very rude and unprofessional, hopefully they improve in this aspect for the summer!
Grant - 12 May 2004 11:13 |
This pub is next to Putney Wharf by Putney Bridge and has a MASSIVE Terrace overlooking the river. Made a first visit on Saturday night and the place was bursting at the seams. There are two bars and a resturant with terrace at the top. Tried to gatecrash the resturant but was rumbled by the manager, a welsh guy called Andrew who was a bit overwhelmed by the amount of people that had found the place so far(its been open three weeks)but gave us a quick tour all the same. Its a Youngs pub that can best be descibed as the Dukes Head for under 30's. I think there'll be a few good night here in the summer..
