Spacious Greene King pub that used to be a Hogshead next to the Stock Exchange. Despite the crowds of people in the street outside, the interior had plenty of tables free on Friday evening. The two Greene King ales were IPA & Broad Street Brew. But they also had 2 guests - Sambrook's Junction & Bedlam Golden Ale. Despite its location, the pub didn't have the feel of a City pub. Most people were dressed casually and there was no air of pretentiousness. Blondie was playing. The downstairs gents toilets were a bit small though. I wasn't expecting to queue! Not a bad option in the City.

A fairly average pub, many worse nearby but could deliver so much more... Nothing about this place inspires of excels....

This is a large bland Greene King Pub with the usual ales and Peroni, like a couple of other pubs I have been into in this area. I spotted two plasma screens, but I saw no sport advertisements.
I will make a point of saying that the barman was extremely friendly, but this is not enough for me to want to return again.

Do a decent range of beers but atmosphere is sadly lacking. Was a smoke- free pub before the ban came in so that has always been a problem here. Prices reasonable for a city pub.

Large Green King establishment sitting at the junction of Old Broad Street with Throgmorton Street with entrances from both sides. Fairly modern dcor and the large glass windows make it quite light and because of its size plenty of places to sit. Wasnt overly busy when I visited , so got served without problem. Fairly standard GK ale offering and although the Moorlands Original was very nice there was nothing here that would me drag me back in if I was passing again.

If you go here expecting a larger-than-normal but otherwise nothing special Greene King City pub then you won't be disappointed. However, thankfully had Tanners Jack on which made a change from IPA or Abbot.
|
Fairly big but a run of the mill Greene King pub. Only had Abbot Ale and IPA on when I went. Generally I'm getting a bit bored of GK, its ales and its pubs.
|
Beer was below par and the pub always seems to be void of atmosphere as well as smoke. Always seems to do a good trade but wonder whether it still will when all pubs are no smoking.
|
Nice to be able to avoid the smoke but beyond that I found it a bit on the dear side and there wasn't really anything special about it.

Even though I am a smoker, I didn't mind having to step outside for a chuff. It's nice to be in a pub where you don't have to fight your way through the nicotine fumes!
Nice big pub, good atmosphere. Wasn't too busy when I was there but that was a good thing.

A Smoke-free bar; one of the few in London! Phew! TJ

Its a real pleasure to have a drink and meal without the normal pollution. The Phoenix offers well kept Greene King ales and a good wine list. The recent Tapas addition to the menu is ideal for those seeking the lighter option.

It's nice to spend a night in here & not having to give your clothes to Oxfam in the morning coz they stink so much. However, it's on the pricey side but I think they were worried about profits by scaring away the cancer-lovers.
Food good & table service for both drinks & food. Nice barmaids!
They could do with getting Sky Sports & that would attract more custom of a footy evening.
An 8 for having the guts to go non-smoking before it's forced on them.

Busy (for a week night - Tuesday). Fair selection of beer on draft (3 - Pride the best), plus a good range of wine by the bottle and glass. Although no-smoking (good) was quite warm due to the number of people. Good number of tables and seating, but not so good if you do not get one of these, as not really a standing drink pub.
|
Not a bad pub but a bit pricey. Great not to have smoke all around! And seemed a happy place to me

Wonderful to find a smoke free pub, however it isn't the most atmospheric or cutting edge place to hang out. Drinks are expensive and the clientelle are almost exclusively suited city types. Naively perhaps, I had imagined that a smoke free pub would attract a more exciting clientelle that your usual pub, however the Phoenix clientelle included some scarily drunk blokes singing badly and loudly next to out table, just like you would get in any pub I suppose. I would go again just to support the smoke free ethos but personally I would like it more if the place had more soul and character.

Aside from obviously delighting all the clean air fascists there is nothing to recommend this pub. Mediocre surroundings, mediocre, overpriced beer, mediocre clientele, mediocre food.. there are far, far better pubs in the City if you bother to have even a cursory check - and some of them are even ventilated.
|
Decent pub food unspoilt by ciggie smoke. Have recommended it to 5 people - all have tried it and been happy.

Could tell the difference as soon as we walked in. Roaring trade (Thursday) - I guess usual city pub stuff. Also do some pretty good chips & onion rings....

Great idea of a pub that is non-smoking. I hope to visit this one SOON. :-)

The city's first non smoking pub which is great if you want to go drinking without you clothes reeking of smoke and the associated hangover from breathing in smoke all night!
