Seans Bar, Athloneback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
most uncomfortable pub in athlone. youd bloody freeze in the beer garrden heaters or no heaters as the breeze from the shannon would go straight thro ya. This pub is very over rated. full of olde lads in the front bar and full of every other sort of yob in the beer garden. The snug across from it or the castle inn are way nicer.

I hate Athlone. Fine town it may well be, with a big river named after an airport running through it !!! But Its my duty to hate Athlone because I grew up in the town down the N6 and "friendly" local rivalry was an essential part of my upbringing. Athlone has shopping malls, A castle, lots of factories, loads of hotels, more shopping malls, a shop in the train station where you can buy Malteeeezers and Sean's Bar. Down the N6 in Ballinasloe we have hospitals, the oldest horse fair in Europe and .... erm eh? Here's the deal - You give me Sean's bar and I'll give you one of our hospitals. The one with all the Athlone people in it. Its nearer. You've already nicked our rugby team. Fair is fair. Speaking of the fair - I'll throw that in too. Sean's Bar in Athlone is no more the oldest pub in Ireland than the cat on its windowsill. There has been a drinking den on this location for centuries but it wasn't trading under its current name for all that time. Cromwell would have sorted that out. Who cares? It ranks amongst the best pubs in Ireland and is a must see on your way to Ballinasloe. By the way - The N6 will soon be replaced by a new motorway called (wait for it) M6. And I still hate Athlone.

Tucked away behind Athlone Castle is the pub that's generally thought to be the oldest in Ireland (part of the walls are still "of clay and wattles made"). A grand spot, Guinness is top notch, as is anything I've sampled there. Good trad. too, which is rare enough these days(there's plenty of trad. to be heard in Irish pubs, but the quaity can be questionable). A bit small & cramped when busy, which is most of the time, but what do you expect from a pub which is truly ancient, it's cosy. Believe it or not, there's sawdust on the floor, how much more traditional can an Irish pub be? The odd eccentric punter can be found, I've seen a particular gent have his pint microwaved for 10 seconds, to get his "warm Guinness". Good Jaysis... Good spot, highly recommended.

The Guinness is excellent. It is the oldest pub in Ireland and it was my grandad's favourite in Athlone. The courtyard leads out to the River Shannon and has a good view. From time to time live music is played. Only problem is the gombeens who love to talk over the top of some beautiful singing and good traditional music.
