£5.25 for a flat end of barrel ESB
largely unchanged and still a standard old style Fuller's house. Only Pride and ESB on draught and both were pretty bland.
Fullers pub that as the previous reviewer says has a cosy interior. London Pride, ESB & Fire Cracker were the 3 ales. Toilets were clean. Handy for the bus, but a little on the expensive side.
Quite similar to other Fullers pubs I've been to across London in the sense it's a bit generic but still they've maintained a classic and traditional fixtures and fittings allowing for a cosy drink. A pub unlikely to insult anybody's tastes. A safe option, but as a Fullers pub they do maintain a well kept selection of their wares and it was quite a comfortable boozer for a quiet one.
This Sunday my pint was served in a glass that was collecting the drips from the handpump!! This is very bad policy and I assume that it is some sort of money saving program. The ale was tainted/stale because of this process. Goodness knows how long the glass had been collecting these drips - or maybethe ale was left over from pulling someone elses pint. This is a practice that should be discouraged!! That having been said this is still a great pub with well kept ales and pleasant atmosphere and once the pint was changed it didn't happen again. The restaurant is also pleasant.

Cracking pub and the best I've been to in the area. One side has numerous TV's so good for football watching if thats your thing. The other side however is TV free and so you can have a chilled out pint regardless of whats on. The food is exceptional and the usual Fullers offerings are present & seemed well kept. I'll definitely be making the trip up here again soon.
very attrative fullers pub with ample floral displays to catch the passer-by's eye,we had a pint of pride and i front row both i guess reasonable enough for London at 3.15pint,sat in the nice beer patio watching over the slightly(in my eyes)"well to do" clientele, 8/10
Popped in for the first time last night. Very conveniently placed too, almost right on the 221 bus route from Mill Hill. Had the TVs on in one side showing the golf, although very unobtrusive. Large Thai restaurant area upstairs. Not overly busy for a Saturday evening, but maybe that's because you can eat downstairs too. Very reasonably priced and decent food. Four Fullers beers on (ESB, Pride, Honeydew and Discovery). Think it was around 3.20 for a pint. Plenty of cider and lager on tap too and well as quite a few different bottles of wine - quite expensive for a glass but reasonably priced for a bottle, if that makes sense. Liked the nice touch of a bottle of suncream on the bar if you're sat in the large area out the front.

By far the best pub in Finchley, I've been fortunate enough to live within 5 minutes walk of this place for the last few years and you couldn't wish for a better local. Shows all live sport (apart from golf) and you can count on a great atmosphere for big football matches - but one side of the pub is free of TV screens altogether so you can usually find a corner for a quiet drink even during the biggest games. Only negatives are the predominantly Thai menu, which is not to everyone's taste, and the fact that the beers are limited to the usual Fullers range, save for a very occasional guest.
The ale, whilst limited to Fullers, is reasonably well kept. The thai place upstairs of ok but nothing special. One of the very few decent pubs within a mile of Finchley.
i used to live around here - this is definitely the best pub in N12, decent ales.

Popped in with some friends on Sunday afternoon. Still very good ales and well worth the taxi fare from Mill Hill, which is now without a proper pub like this. Good atmosphere and highly recommended for the range and quality of ales.
Big Square pub with large sqarish bar serving two sections. Amiable enough Fuller's house with reasonable service and a drinkable pint of Pride. Probably the best pub in the vicinity, though as previously mentioned there ain't a lot of competition.

Popped in one Sunday afternoon and found great staff and a decent drop of cask ale. Enjoyed it, very pleasant atmosphere and the tv for football was not obtrusive in the bar we were using. All in all a good pub. Did not try the food.
The food was terrible. I had a bug crawling in my starter, and the pork stir fry was horrible, it tasted like the cheapest meat you could buy, didnt taste like pork. Service extremely slow.
Easily the best pub in North Finchley. Excellent beers, good and quick service. Tables and bartops kept clean. A proper pub in an area of awful chav boozers
(Hi stev 1963 no sadly the Copper top bar is no longer there). I remember that as well. I was in here last night for a few Two Pints of Pride & Two Pints of ESB all in good order must be the best Pub in North Finchley and to shows It was reasonably full with Drinkers for a Monday Evening. Lets hope they keep up the good work as its a very good Pub not like some of the others locally that have sadly closed.
Nice pub, best in N12, but there aint much competition!
I last posted a review of this pub in December 2004, and I am pleased to say that nothing has changed...this pub is still fantastic. Actually, it may even have got better. A great pint of Pride, a relaxed atmosphere, good food if you want it, and wonderful bar staff. Lucy is the best landlady in the world, and Fullers should be proud! I love this pub!
I Went into this Pub again yesterday its still a very good Ale house with some of the best Fullers Ales on tap and always in top condition. Staff are always very helpful and friendly and the restaurant is separate upstairs out the way so it don't spoil the Pub like some other Pubs have done. I would say overall its the best Pub in North Finchley by far and I would have no problem recommending this place to anyone.
Have'nt been to The Moss since we moved back to Poole 20 years ago-good to see that it's still highly regarded.Am a bit surprised tho bout the comment re the pub in the 80s-it was wonderfull then..best pub i've EVER known.Remember well the old copper bar,Dave the landlord, the british legion boys, the way all the light-shades were out of whack, the bikers in the back bar,how rammed it always was,one old alcoholic[named ESB man by the wife & i]who was forever falling flat on his face & the fact they never had music on-apart from at closing time, when it was the only way to kill the atmoshere so that people would leave! Why did they change the name?Is the copper bar still there?
Best pub in the area and well worth travelling to - I should know, I moved in round the corner!

Correct number is now 020 8343 6110

PLEASE DO NOT PHONE THE TELEPHONE NUMBER LISTED ON THIS WEBSITE FOR THE ELEPHANT INN. IT IS AN OLD SITE, AND THE NUMBER NOW GOES THROUGH TO A PRIVATE HOUSE. WE ARE BEING INUNDATED WITH CALLS FOR THIS PUB.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE STOP USING THIS NUMBER!!!!!!!!
Ideal if you like a quiet pint or two and Fuller's ales kept in top condition.
I have to agree with the last few posts that this is, in my opinion, the best pub in North Finchley (not that theres that much competition).
Relaxed inside and a large seated area out the front for us smokers. Beer is fine and the bar staff are friendly enough. You cant really go wrong with that formula.
I went back in here last night Excellent Ales. Pint of London Pride & Pint of Seafarers Ale & A Pint ESB Ale. All in good condition gets my vote for best Pub in North Finchley by far. And it don't get full of Lager louts like most the Pubs around here. Its got good staff friendly Pub.

I went here last night and was most surprised its much improved since I last used this Pub. I used to drink in here during the late 80s early 90s when it was The Moss Hall Tavern but I had never been in since it changed names I must say its Much better a real good Pub in Finchley.
This is the only establishment worth drinking at in the Finchley area. As a young (20) yet discerning beer drinker I always find it reassuring that I am greeted with suspicion and requests for ID when visiting this pub. The staff do well to maintain a civilised clientele, and their suspicion in relation to my youth is well founded in an area rife with chavs and other undesirables spilling from the Tally Ho, Autumn Leaves and the various other lager lout 'pubs' of North Finchley. I have not tried the Thai menu but from what I have heard it is top notch. My only slight negative point is that it is a Fuller's tied house, and the beers, despite being delicious, are thus more or less predictable.
I have been drinking in this pub for the 20 years and it is now probably the best it has ever been . I remeber it when it had the famouse "Biker Bar " in the back bar and was called The Moss Hall. But now it has a warm welcome , excellent beer and a friendly atmosphere. Its not the cheapest in the area , which adds to keeping the young idiots away but by far the best .
one of the best pubs in finchley. good beer, good service, good clientele.
the real ale was of a high quality.
they do thai food although i havent had it yet.
have the football on but it doesnt dominate the pub.
Before this evening I think it was c. 37 years since I last was in this pub - then if I recall correctly a Bass Tavern or Inn, with bright red doors, and pretty dire inside. A remarkable transmogrification .... and the Gales Festival Mild and Fullers London Pride were both very good.
It was a friendly welcoming place, with people variously watching Sky Sports in one bar, but not impsoing this on the rest, couple chatting, playing chess, eating what looked like good Thai food, and one a Sunday roast, reading newspapers .... all in all, one to bear in mind for the next time I visit old haunts!
Definitely the only real pub in Finchley - and the flowers outside are always superb. We are not living in Finchley at present but this is our top place over there.
This pub is the only one to visit in North Finchley. The licencee Lucy and her team are dedicated to both the quality of the beer and their customers. The real ales are consistently excellent and served by knowledgeable staff.
Excellent local serving good beer and food. Offers comfortable seating and perfect ambience for socialising with your mates.
No idea why they changed the name from the 'Moss Hall Tavern' - but that is my only complaint about this nice little pub. Most North Finchley pubs are either grotty boozers or chav infested 'bars' - this is one of the few decent real pubs. It has the usual fullers beers on tap, and an interesting Thai restaurant round the side. Easily the best pub in North Finchley.
This is a fantastic place for a good pint. Also has a decent wine list. If your looking for a traditional pub this is the place in finchley to go. Prices are reasonable.
Just discovered this place as I'm new to the area - very impressed. Just a nice, straightforward, straight-up boozer - and reasonable prices too!

Probably the best pub in North Finchley; this place is slightly off the beaten track (it is not on the high street where all the other pubs are) and so it does not attract all the youngsters and drunks that the other local pubs do. If you want a quiet drink in a pleasant pub then this is the place for you.
Fullers beer, a roaring log fire, and comfy leather couches - this is definitely our favourite pub in the area.
A cracking Fullers local, great range of beers and a lovely ambience. Some complain of it's name change from the Moss Hall Tavern, but never mind it's the best bet in North Finchley for a drink and a chat without loud music and a the beer-boy crowd.
New to the area and went into what I thought was a private party - it wasnt. Excellent night with excellent DJ's,one did an excellent Elvis take off. Friendly staff and not a sign of trouble.
A great pub for football, decent beer and a fit barmaid, what more could you want?!
really good pub.
My favourite pub in North London. Great beer, friendly staff and entertaining crowd. Good Thai food.
A very good pub. The staff are friendly, Thai food is top quality. The range of beers and other drinks is good although, like all Fuller's pubs, a bit pricey. Popular, but hard, Monday night quiz and usually a good place to watch sport. Overall, please stay away as I don't like going to packed pubs.
One of the best and most established pubs in North Finchley.
Not quite as good now as when Mark and the New Zealand crowd were in charge.
It should be called The Moss Hall Tavern as otherwise people who are new to the area can get confused.
Let itself down a bit last Friday by playing Michael Jackson ALL NIGHT.
Great for watching football on the big screen. Good Thai food in attached restaurant. Used to be my local and served me very well.
This is a great Fullers pub and has been for most of the past 20 years I've been acquainted with it (and probably long before that).
Just one thing though. It should change its name back to the Moss Hall Tavern as that is what everyone still knows it as.
By far best pub in N12 for my money - in fact it is perhaps the best pub in the whole Finchley area. Good range of Fuller's finest and friendly staff. Have never tried the Thai restaurant, but if you want a good pint in nice surroundings in N12, this is the place to go.

This pub is magic! One bar is quiet and friendly, one bar is a bit louder and has a big screen for footy. The beer is kept well, the bar staff are great, and Lucy, the new manager, is an absolute star. The regulars are friendly, and I have never had a bad night in here. It's one of those places where you pop in for a swift one, and stay all night!
There is also a great Thai restaraunt upstairs, and an excellent quiz on a Monday.
I was there seven years ago.I remember it as the essence of British pubs.I would like to go back soon.Simply fantastic!!!

A very nice Fuller's pub in an area rather lacking in nice hostelries. Worth a visit.

beer is good. very comfortable. a proper pub.
andrew - 9 Jun 2004 01:01 |
one of only two real pubs in all of n.12., and there both at complete opposite ends of north finchley, almost in the neighbouring districts . a fullers tied-house, but often has a guest-beer, has potential to be in ' the good beer guide' . a real pub with real atmoshere. well recommend if you are in the area. is a two-bar pub, has a good thai restaurant upstairs, and sells down-to-earth hot bar-snacks in the rest of the pub .
