Rose and Crown, Southwarkback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
No footy shown in this pub anymore. They had crufts on last night instead! Bar staff are too preoccupied playing on their phones and chatting to serve you a pint. When they do eventually get round to pouring it they struggle. Avoid the Guinness unless you want a good quarter pint of head. Pool table is the only redeeming feature of this pub now. They even close early if they fancy it. Shame.

Having been a regular at the rose and crown for 4 years I am really disappointed in the changes it has undergone recently. It has been sold and a new owner taken over along with his miserable bar staff and dog wandering about the bar.
Visiting this weekend I was appalled by the state of the place- filthy! The bar was sticky, glasses everywhere, the loos looked like they have not been cleaned in weeks. There was no music on and the place had zero atmosphere- very unusual for a Friday night. It also took me over 10 minutes to get served a flat pint. I was not the only one unimpressed, I know many regulars who won't be bothering with this place anymore. Especially since they have got rid of the amazing Thai food. I certainly don't fancy risking a dog hair in my burger from the new menu!!
Very sad, the previous owners were always friendly, It was a welcoming, clean place and I really enjoyed having a drink there. Time to find a new local I think.

Ive been a regular at this pub for about 6 years and the main draw was the sky sports, the Thai food and the good service....New owners in, and the Sky Sports and the Thai food are gone. The bar staff are awful....The bar is permanently sticky and covered in slops and newspaper print from newspapers getting stuck to the sticky bar....the bar staff clearly have no experience and the new food menu is over priced and offers nothing different from other better bars in the area (sandwiches and burgers)....left after one pint and went to the Lord Clyde instead.

There was a time when this was a pub really worth visiting. They used to do some excellent Thai food at very reasonable prices. The pub has changed hands, however, and the food is no longer available. I used to visit every Friday with some mates, for a meal and a few drinks - but not any more. There was always a choice of 1 bitter, maybe two at the outside. There are pubs in the area that sell a wider selection.

Not a bad little boozer with some decent Harvey's Sussex to sup, however you have to go into the pool room to watch the footy as the big screen in the other room is impossible to look at, almost white.
|
Other than a few people sitting at the tables outside there was no one in here when I arrived mid evening a fact that may be explained by the loud music being played inside. The pub is a spacious affair split into two sections by a doorway near the corner. The plethora of external doors may indicate that it was further split in times past.
I'm not a big fan of loud music in pubs so had my pint and left. I might come back here in a group but that would be about it particularly given some of the competition nearby.

I liked this pub although it was pretty empty compared to the other pubs in the area during my visit. The barman was approachable and turned the music down on my request. There is a TV that was showing Sky Sports and a pool table that the only other people in the pub were playing on. I counted four ale pumps, three of which were serving up Pride and the other was unused, along with the usual suspect lagers and Bulmers.
If it was in another area it would probably be the best pub around, but it doesnt really stand out from its peers even though it is open until midnight at the weekends. That said I still liked it and would go back, if only to play pool.

I meant "correct" not "incorrect" - d'oh.

Not sure it merits the 7+ average rating but this is, as someone else said, a "decent, unpretentious, locals' pub". An interesting layout, with two rooms connected by a doorway and - if my counting was incorrect - about four or five different doors to the pub! Ale-wise there were four pumps, disappointingly all serving Pride (which I didn't try on this occasion) - but I suspect this may be more of a lager-drinker's pub.

Decent, unpretentious pub with a relaxed atmosphere and spacious feel due to the high ceilings. Serves a nice pint of London Pride and two other real ales.

Superb pint of Pride on my last visit, cheery staff and the natives are friendly. Good find, and not too full of suits

Suffers from having The Lord Clyde at the end of the road from my point of view. But non the less a good local boozer. Certainly a good place to watch a mid day kickoff on a Saturday.

The outstanding feature of this pub is the food. It has a genuine thai chap doing all the catering and its simply mouthwatering. The staff are friendly with the landlord up for a bit of banter especially when Chelsea are on the big screen. Nice pool room too. Good honest pub.

I found this pub by accident way back in Feb 06, & have started going as often as I can. Its run by a cheery fella called Nick who does a wonderful job, & is up for a chat whenever he's not behind the bar or busy serving. His staff are all a great laugh too (A sign in my books that they have fun doing their job!). It is a lively pub with a most of the patrons being regulars or Locals. They have to be one of the friendliest (& funniest) bunch in London, accepting me quickly without a bad word!
Drinks; They serve three ales, Pride, Youngs & IPA. There are 3 Extra Cold beers on tap, Fast Flow Carling (6sec pint), Fosters & Kronenberg. They aslo sell Stella. They pore a mean Guinness, John Smiths & Strongbow. Their selection of bottled drinks are Magners & Bulmers for cider, Carona, Becks, Bud, Carlsberg & Holsten Pils for beer, B'Beezers & WKDs, and water & J2O for the Drivers. They also serve the normal Spirits and mixers with a good selection of fine wines, Red and White.
Food; The Thai food is exceptionally good, with large tasty portions that'l only set you back a fiver at the most! Lunch times during the week can get a bit hectic as the office crowds fill up the pub for lunch. From 1200ish to 1400 its busy, but the food comes fast so you never have to wait long if your hungry.
Entertainment; Friday & saturday nights are nearly always a blast, as the pub hires a singer on friday night, and has karaoke on Saturday! The pub has 2 Bandits, a pool table that is'nt hogged, & a Jukebox which has up to date music as well as the classic's. There is a big screen that is only really on when its quite or when there is sufficent demand to show a big footy or rugby game. When a game is on, the pub is rarely chocablock with people, and the volume is low enough to still have a conversation.
If you get the chance to go, make sure you try the food. Its served from 1100am until 1900hrs monday to friday. This pub has a good atmosphere, and you may well find yourself staying later than you planned.
