user reviews of the Rack and Tenter, Moorgate

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Surprisingly nice. I imagine it's a great place to visit in the summer as there is the massive open area to stand in outside the pub and then quite a decent area out of the back to stand in. Spacious place inside and I wouldn't be adverse to coming back here.

Like so many bars around Moorgate, this place is somewhat hidden away under a office block and thus a bit difficult to spot from any distance. Inside, it has a modern layout with the obligatory (and annoying) high tables. Several silent TVs showing live sport. There are also a few tables between the columns at the front, but a better bet is the reasonably-sized patio garden beyond the conservatory at the back. Four beers on handpump - Pedigree, EPA, Brakspear and the seasonal Hooray Henley. Little in the way of character, but you can do a lot worse around here.

I visited this pub recently and was pleased to find four cask beers on sale. I tried three of them, they were all really good. Nice to drink out of clean glasses for a change! The bar staff were really knowledable about cask beer and were very friendly too, can imagine it getting busy on a friday night. Will come again.

I was here on a recent Friday evening for a drink with my workmates.
Even though the place was busy the service was really quick.
They have a good selection of beers including four real ales on handpump.
There are a few plasma screens showing different sports.
The downside of this pub is the toilet which is too small for such a busy place.
Because the weather was good we could sit outside in the garden, watch cricket and enjoy our cold pints of beer.
I'll definitely visit it again.

Solid city pub that does exactly what it says on the tin and shows Sky Sports.

Not very atmospheric or traditional but I don't know what you would expect given the location or target market. Unashamedly full of suits and it has a large outside area to sit / stand / smoke which always helps. Is also right by Moorgate tube which makes it easier to get home

Has several TV's which are situated in odd positions so that you have to secure an optimum table to watch,

If you ever eat in here you will regret it. Best to stick to the (occasionally flat) lager and McCoys

This pathetic excuse of a bar has a real problem - their staff are idiots. During a champions league night, I requested that the Man Utd v Celtic match be shown. Arsenal were playing the same night but that wasn't a problem as they have the ability to split the screens, or so I thought. It took them about 40 mins of the first half to figure out how to get the two games on at the same time. And their excuse - the manager wasn't in! 'I only serve drinks and occasionlly clean my own arse!' Morons.

Some hot bar staff behind the bar, as mentioned below.

Last time I was in here I had a rotten pint which isn't really acceptable in the City when there is plenty of other boozers to frequent.
HLC - 14 Aug 2008 10:55
Half decent boozer with eye candy behind the bar and quite friendly with it. Downside is it's packed to the rafters with one pint wonders on Friday evenings, especially since the St Pauls Tavern and Kings Head closed, so best avoided then.

I was in this pub on 31st Jan 2008. I hads 2 pints, 1 Carling and 1 Fosters. Both were flat and not drinkable. I bought a round of drinks and for 4 people, the bill was 16 pound. Not nice and won't go back.

On a sunny mid-afternoon the patio/terrace at the rear is a relatively pleasant place to have lunch with a pint.
Agree that the front may look like a council estate pub but it's really a City suit spot, with the usual pluses and minuses that carries.
I would guess that this sort of place experiences a high staff turnover, with many (possibly eastern Europeans) working to help them with their studies or on working holiday. Therefore the service you will receive is really down to luck of who is there at teh time.
If you just want a drink there are better real ale pubs a short walk from here.

best pub of a poor bunch
cmofish - 30 Jan 2008 15:36
Very poor. My girlfriend heard staff being offensive about customers twice and I had to stop her from saying something.
Really will not come into the place again, Women were queueing up outside the toilets and yes I would agree that the pub is plasticky looking.
Beer was passable (nothing more) but the whole attitude of staff turned us off the place.
ShaunC - 5 Aug 2007 20:10
Marston pub in London whatever next? Beer was OK but nothing special but good to see a Jennings beers on. Service was excellent with plenty of bar staff on, on a busy Friday lunchtime. A bit plastic looking, the pub not the staff The pub has the rare quality of appealing to both men and women. So all round not a bad experience.

Looks like a council estate pub in that photo with only the suits giving it away. Surprisingly light inside however and have the addition of a decent-sized space out back that catches the sun nicely. There's a couple of screens for football but they're awkwardly placed - this won't concern Tarquin and Jemima come the next "soccer tournament" that "Becksy" and "Roonesy" play in as the Cuban Bar next door stick a couple of big screens and a bottle bar outside under big umbrellas. And fair play to them.

Par for the course around here but can be a pain getting served on a Thursday/Friday until the one-pint-wonders have gone about 7ish but fine then. Food decent and guest ales well-kept. If you're after a proper beer the St Paul's Tavern is a more traditional Casque Marque pub around the corner on Chiswell St.
random_ranger - 21 Jun 2007 17:09
There was plenty of staff on, and a sporadic table on offer, which kindly didnt add a cheeky 10% tip automatically to. Three ales on (with Cumberland being the most exotic) although all served in Fosters glasses, which made me shudder with shame.

A major flaw is that it is very, very smoky. I cant wait for the ban to come in; it will make such a difference to the pub experience and will hopefully cut the lung and lip cancer rate.

Anyway, certainly not deserving a 7.6, but a 4 (going up to 5 when smoking is banned).

Back in the days when I used to enjoy drinking, I'd often use this as a city landing beacon... packed full of essex's finest on a thurs/fri night.... whack in a dancefloor and you could host a Hit Man and Her revival night in here.... probably the first place I ever saw tanderson7 fall asleep in
shw500 - 23 Jun 2006 16:02
much better since refurb - manager good bloke, staff very friendly (most need a good haircut);-)Not a bad selection of booze or clientele.....and right next to the tube...(nice TV for football)..will go again.

WARNING: If you are conniwot and you hate real ale please avert your eyes as this review mentions real ale and fails to mention your favourite tipple, FOSTERS.

Just been in for lunch for the first time since the refurb. Perfectly pleasant interior - non descript, smart. Not bad, not good. Manager is a good bloke, and explained to me they will always have two guest beers on rotation. They have four real ales in total - two regulars from Marston (Pedigree and Burton), current guests are Youngs Bitter and Jennings Cockerhoop. Tried the lattermost which was excellent. He asked what I'd like to see on and said he has an extensive list. Not wanting to mention something totally off the wall (which probably won't sell in a bar like this anyway) I suggested Adnams Broadside which he says he'll look into getting.

Food was quite pricey - 8/9 for a main. We had sandiwches for 5 which took 40 minutes to arrive (thanks to aforementioned good bloke manager failing to put our orders in!) and were just about ok for the price. I think its best to rely on the waitress service (which is if anything overly attentive) and order when you have a table rather than at the bar as we did.

For lager drinkers (though not conniwot, who only likes fosters and other weak lagers) there is Paulener (not the wheat beer version).

I'll be back, but then my office is next door.

The refurbishment has created a Pitcher and Piano type of bar and a considerable improvement on the old place.Rather attractive girls serving will certainly bring the punters in including me!
leggless - 8 Mar 2006 20:34
Currently undergoing a major refurbishment - sign outside says it will open "late February". Looks like it is getting a bit of an All Bar One treatment.
anonymous - 24 Feb 2006 13:06
I used to grab lunch in here regularly, though it was a while ago now. Don't pay attention to the picture - it is much more pleasant that it looks, both inside and out. Even the distinctly plain office block which it forms part of has been refurbished a little. The beer garden/patio actually overlooks a service road, not the circle line.
Monters - 22 Jan 2006 18:18
this used to be one of my watering holes but no more. it is rare to get a good pint of real ale which is overpriced even for the city.come back Jane!
leggless - 4 Nov 2005 19:41
The pub has been taken over by Wolverhampton and Dudley and Jane has gone. Now do you wonder why it has gone down??
I remember when you could hardly move in here.
pubcustomer - 8 Aug 2005 13:21
The Rack & Tenter used to be a great place to get a cheap and filling lunch in the City. Visited it today for the first time in a couple of months and was sorely disappointed. Lunch menu very limited (only sandwiches and 3 hot main courses available), buffet-style service changed to table service (so less time to eat) and prices gone up from about 6 (including chips and salad) to 7-9 (chips now 1.80 on top)! Drink prices seemed OTT, even for the City - 2 for a half-pint of cola. What a shame!
alimac - 29 Jun 2005 19:51
mmmmmmmmmmm,..that picture really sells it don't it. ummmm....Its quite big.....
kmcs - 1 Apr 2005 12:57
Looks freaking awful from the outside (it's buried under an office block that surely must be pulled down soon) but surprisingly pleasant inside.

Also has a patio outdoors at the back, overlooking the circle line but MIND YOU DON'T FALL OVER THE EDGE ONTO THE TRACKS!!!

A fantastic pub offering everything from quiet corners to vast standing and seating areas, al-fresco drinking and eating in Spring and Summer, friendly staff (especially Jane the Manager). The only downside would be that it gets crowded on Thursday evenings - otherwise a great boozer
