I lived here in the 1970s as my parents ran the place for about 14 years. Very sad to see it is closed - last had a drink in there at the beginning of 2016. The wood panels, mirrors and brasses should be preserved in any reincarnation. If the upper floors are turned into apartments I wonder what will become of my bedroom!?
|
Very sad to see this Victorian style boozer get sold off by the Crown for yet more redevelopments. It was a classic feeling boozer not far from the BBC and many other important places yet sufficiently snug feeling and served good ale. It had a certain timeless feel but now lost to us forever.
|
The George closed on July 2nd 2016. The Crown Estate has planning consent for a major re-development of this and the adjacent building:
15/01327/FULL. "Amalgamation of 55 and 57 Great Portland Street to provide a dual/alternative use of the basement, ground and first floors as either a public house or a restaurant (Class A4/A3) and use of the second to fourth floors as three flats (Class C3).
|
Classic rather than just traditional, the George is a real pub serving several beers and with its very own brew which I had and which went down well. Deservedly popular also.
|
I reckon this might be Edwardian or late Victorian. Lots of dark wood and ornate mirrors with a rather dilapidated feel about it. My comfy seat had a rip in it and must have been about 40 years old, and there was paper peeling from the ceiling. But rather welcoming nevertheless, and it was nice to see the barman, who may have been from eastern Europe, taking care to look after a blind customer. 5 real ales were on offer including Doctor Hexter's Healer and 6X. I had a pint of the latter - it was drinkable if a little over-chilled. Food looked a bit expensive - and mainly consisted of steak and burgers. This isn't a bad pub for the drinker given its location so near to Oxford Circus. I'd revisit.
|
Nice little pub about 400 yards from Oxford Circus. Was in here Tuesday night and had a good evening. Busy but still found a table. They had about 5 ales on and I enjoyed the London Glory and Old Golden Hen which were both fresh and tasty. Pretty decent food too. The bar staff were great but as there were only 2 of them and they were handling all the food delivery as well they ocasionally got overwhelmed when it got busy. Overall would definitely go back.

Not a huge pub, but far enough from Oxford Circus (only a couple of minutes' walk, but enough to keep out the masses) to not be mega busy. Friendly staff - nothing like being greeted with a cheery 'hello' as you walk through the door, being allowed to try the beer before buying, and have a bit of a conversation too. My wife and sister went for the buy two larges glasses of wine and get the bottle deal (meant a 19 bottle was about 13) while I tried the particularly good Ruby Mild (Rudgate) and then the slightly less flavoursome London Glory (Greene King). Both 3.50 per pint and in decent nick. Several ales on tap, and the guest beers rotate frequently, with a handful of bottled options too. Food was good and had we not been off to a comedy gig, then a session would definitely have been in order, as I would happily have stayed for a few more.

I'm very sorry to hear of the incident below. It shouldn't happen and I apologise for it. Thankfully it is an example of something which I have never witnessed before and can't understand why it should have occurred on this occasion.

I went into this pub last week with a friend. For two main reasons:
1) It was the only pub around that was not packed and had seating available.
2) When I worked in the west end (a couple of years ago) I used to come into the pub from time to time and the beer was alway good.
We both ordered the same (Batemans). I had just taken a sip, my friend a glug, but we both thought it was at best the bottom of the barrel, but more likely off.
My friend took the pints back to exchange them. He came back and said the barman refused to change the pints. I spoke to the bar man who admited he did not try it himself but people had been drinking it during the day and therefore it was ok.
He had also thrown the beer away and implied that we should not been drinking beer as it was an "aquired taste". I have to say in 25 years of drinking beer in pubs I have never had a more patronising barman and never have I had anyone just pour away my drinks without offering a fresh pint.
As for the pub. I liked the decor and the other patrons seemed pleasant. But as we were in there no more than 5 minutes it was hard to tell.

Hi Dearl,
I am very disappointed to read of your experience regarding your pint. Of course the beer should have been replaced and I have rebriefed the staff and I will endevour to ensure that this doesn't happen again.
If you make yourself known to me in the pub, I would be delighted to buy you a pint.
Apologies,
Ed.

Had a very obviously off pint this lunchtime (so cloudy you couldn't see through it and tasted/smelt of vinegar) but when I took it back to the bar I was told that that was the way the beer was supposed to be I wasn't offered another pint so left.

Hi John,
Thank you for your review. The sign outside is not meant to be misleading. I apologise if it is. As you know GK have quite a stable of beers these days and as such I dip into them regularly to supplement Guest Ales from smaller brewerys.
My only 2 permanent ales are IPA and Royal London hence for example Abbot would for me be a Guest.
Whilst I always try to always have on at least 2 non GK Guests I do always serve my beer in date order so sometimes (as on your visit) it does look a bit GK heavy.
But hopefully as in H&H Bitter not your 'usual' GK beers!
Thanks,
Ed.

Situated slightly to the north of Oxford Circus tube station, The George is an attractive looking Greene King pub occupying a prominent street corner position.
Well maintained hanging flower baskets outside create an initially positive impression. A blackboard on the pavement entices us in with the words " It's a beer festival here 365 days a year. 3 guest ales at any one time. 15-20 different ales per month. Why go anywhere else ?". We also learn that the pub was established in 1677.
It's a pleasant, welcoming pub, despite the bare boarded floor, with a fine elegant bar back, some attractive etched mirrors and a cosy dark wood panelled seating area to one side of and behind the bar at one end. It's got the high ceiling and style of an old Victorian pub.
Separate entrances on each street would appear to indicate that this was formerly a multi-roomed pub, although no other evidence to support this is visible. Standard pub menus on the tables and black shirted staff, unfortunately do contribute towards creating something of a chain pub feel, but this is partly counteracted by staff who, on my recent Saturday lunchtime visit, seemed particularly welcoming and enthusiastic.
BBC House is quite close by and an information board in the pub doorway tells us that the pub was nicknamed "The Gluepot" by Sir Henry Wood, the former conductor, and that older BBC staff still refer to the pub by that name. Coincidentally, the seating area on the left was marked as "reserved" and, shortly after my arrival, in walked Clive Anderson ( TV programme - have I got news for you ?) , followed shortly afterwards by a load of people who I didn't recognise, but were presumably BBC staff. In times gone by, Dylan Thomas and George Orwell apparently used to frequent this pub.
A booklet by the bar gives details of a Greene King Ale Trail and a map showing the location of all participating 23 pubs in the capital.
Beers on were Greene King IPA, Royal London ( odd, thought they were an insurance company !?) , Speckled Hen, Hardy and Hansons Kimberley plus O'Hanlon's Yellowhammer. By my reckoning that's one guest beer, not three ( as advertised ). Notably, on what was probably the hottest day of the year to date, both the Kimberley and the Royal London were in excellent condition.
The "background" music was a bit loud for my liking at times, but, taking the visit as a whole, I was quite impressed with this one and I'd happily call in again when next in the vicinity.
Finally, how pleasing it is to see that the pub management here are using BITE to provide us with useful information on what beers are to be stocked, rather than, as practised by other pubs who shall remain nameless, posting a series of exceptionally complimentary fake "reviews" from bogus non existent customers

This may be a Greene King pub, but it's a very good one. Popped in today tried GK seasonal ales - Morris Madness, London Royal - both were very good. Also tried the guest beer - Exmoor Fox - very, very good. The food was good and the blokes serving were very efficient and freindly. Overall a very good pub and I'll be back.

This is a welcoming and pretty classy bar with a great selection of ales. A very good and comfortable place to meet friends with some nice food on the menu. I also enjoyed their mulled wine - a nice warmer on a cold night. Staff were friendly and service unusually good for a metro pub. I enjoyed myself and will go back when in the neighborhood.
|
Not bad at all and this is a GK pub that has more than IPA and Abbot on pumps. A handy establishment this as it is open from 11 on Saturdays unlike many in the area and of course some that don't open at all. Good menu (which hasn't seemed to have changed in about 3 years but probably because it's popular) is reasonably priced for this area.
|
GK but not bad. Tonight they have IPA, Old Hookey and Westgate Flankers Tackle (probably another GK) beer. Ornate, old fashioned, dark wood panelled pub. Considering I work so close a reasonable find.
|
A large L-shaped space, the bar on the back wall of the main area has an attractive tiled floor splash area, mostly wooden floors elsewhere but carpeted in the rather elegant area to the side which has dark wood panelling, etched mirrors and a few framed prints. The bar back has more etched glass. Comfortable seating with upholstered banquettes, a couple of leather covered benches plus a mix of traditional chairs and stools. TVs at each end, both muted, showing a choice of Sky News or Sky Sports News. Some sort of latino sounds playing. Its a GK pub company place so has IPA and Abbot, OSH was off but also on were Everards Tiger and Brewsters Decadence (4.4%) a pleasant light hoppy beer. I'm not a fan of GK but it is rather pleasing to see an increase in the availability of choice in their pubs recently, and I quite liked it in here.
|
I meet friends here about evey 10 - 12 weeks to catch up and so far it hasn't let me down. Good choice of ales for the beer drinkers, decent lager apparently too and some reasonable wines. Nibbles aren't bad either!
|
used to enjoy a beer or 2 in here when mark was the publican. all the barmaids ( except Simon) were well fit and the beer was well kept. I could easily spend an afternoon in there watching sports and viewing Kerry's Boobs... such a shame its changed
|
This is a reasonable pub, but it does nothing to stand out from its peers. There are a couple of small TVs that were showing the Sky Sports News feed, but on enquiry I discovered that they do not have Sky Sports. The staff were polite enough, but the pub was pretty empty for a Friday evening.
Greene King IPA, Abbot and Rockin Rudolph were available. The barmen gave us a sample of the Rudolph and I wasnt very impressed (that could just be my taste buds though). Peroni and some bog standard lager are also available.
This is an OK pub, but not worth going out of your way for.
|
Quite an interesting interior, and a friendly atmosphere. Even the Christmas decorations (which I usually find pretty charmless in most pubs) almost started to make me feel like it's time to get into the festive spirit. Can't now recall what pint I had (probably something from Greene King), but the beer was certainly OK too.
|
In many respects this seemed a fairly unremarkable pub service was OK; Greene King ales on tap; averagely comfortable seating. But it has what looks like an original Victorian or Edwardian bar back with etched mirrors typical of the period, and some ancient-looking round marble-top tables that have clearly seen a lot of use. But on the whole I would say that this is not a pub worth seeking out, but a decent enough place to stop for a pint if you are in the area and happy enough to drink GK ales.
|
mib - when you say the barmaids are pocketable, do you mean they're soo tiny they would fit in pockets ?? IPA in good condition, but pretty soon ran out - along with the Abbot. So the only remaining choice was IPA 'Cold'. Not sure about this stroke of Marketing genius - it seems to be trying to be John Smiths - which in my book is a very bad idea.
|
Note to Messrs Greene & King: If you really want to sell more ALE - Encourage your Staff to FILL THE BLOODY GLASSES. I assume that the current Persistent short measure is due to a Proactive Punter reProfiling Programme. You are truly taking the P's. Perhaps it would help if you published an exchange rate for Inches of Thong-Flaunted vs Froth-Poured - Displayed next to the Tariff ? The Abbot is still in very good condition - It just doesn't come in full Pints any more. I expect it's down to global warming or something. What we need is more Polar Bears behind the Bar.
|
Craig and Karen moved to the Bree Louise - near Euston Station - about three years ago.
|
I used to work at the George with Craig and Karen many moons ago. Would like to catch up with them, does anyone know when they left the George and where they left for?
|
Now disconcertingly bright and shiny - but a few months of lovingly applied nicotine should take care of that (idiot legislation permitting). The wobbly gantries have gone alas - along with half the bar and half the handpumps - only three left now. The pumps appear to be a little stiff - the bar top bends in sympathy - and the new house style would appear to include a northern head - first time I have ever had to ask for a top up at the George. The Abbot tasted exceedingly good however. The Gluepot is still casting its spell - people still walk twice round the pub looking for the toilets - and the barmaids are still decidedly pocketable.
|
It is open again! Nice lick of paint. No big screen though.
|
It appears from the TfL traffic camera that the scaffolding has gone and the outside lantern is lit. Does this mean the place is open again ?
|
The date is not known at the moment.

Do you no when it will be reopening as i cant wait to get back in there

In response to Cidered.
The fire was an accident and the loss of business and affect on peoples lives is emence. therefore why would it be strange that this happened 2 days before the world cup. when every pub in the country is gearing up for a great two months!!!
anonymous - 21 Aug 2006 09:24 |
Still closed as far as I can see. Glad there was no loss of life from the fire. Always used to find this a rather smokey pub (absolutely no joke intended) and quite packed, although good for watching footy. Strange that fire occurred 2 days before the World Cup started.
|
great barbies apparantly

Gutted, wont be the same. Follow on from the Dog's sentiments. Will be back.
anonymous - 8 Jun 2006 14:20 |
shame - it burnt down yesterday. Thankfully no major casualties.
|
Nice traditional Greene King pub with some interesting preserved original glasswork - always gets an extra point from me for that. Friendly bar staff, and they're English as well - not eastern European - which is a BIG BIG plus ( at least three points ) as I dont speak Polish or like pointing to what drink I want.
I shall definitely come here again - preferably sooner rather than later
|
"love", "darling", "sir" and "yesmate" are just some of the things I've been called by the welcoming staff of The George.
And it's that kind of customer service that they extend across their whole business. Always friendly, chatty and quick to serve, they make the illicit worktime pint a positive joy.
|
Traditionally styled pub with good quality Greene King beers. The IPA ran out on our visit and showed no signs of being replenished, so we were forced to drink Abbot. Pricey but in keeping with the location. Big TV screens spoiled it for me, not being a sport fan. Worth a return trip.
|
A bit of a boring pub. Typical Greene King. The IPA (the only cask on offer) was in dire condition. An old man's pub.
|
Tidy and popular wood panelled one room Greene King pub with a cosy alcove. The Abbott was pricey for the area (2.96) but well kept.
|
not bad,..yep,..not bad in here....not bad at all,......i dunno about that fit barmaid comment though,..not unless you like your birds,...well,...male.....

Fine pub and a haven away from the madness that is Oxford Street.Always a good atmosphere when the big rugby internationals are on.
