Now re-opened as The Hill, Craft Union (Enterprise Inns) group. Astonishingly cheap, and awful. First couple of weeks full of herberts barred from everywhere else. Left it a couple of weeks, and herberts seem to have been barred, but couldn't find the bar staff. Mystery solved, they were all at the corner table, texting, playing Candy Crush etc. Fingers crossed things pick up, but when you sell rotten guinness at £2.95 per pint, you can't expect much.

Went on Saturday evening as part of a large group celebrating niece's 16th birthday. Ordered the soup of the day (cream of tomato and pepper. Unfortunately, this had to be returned, as the "cream" had a distinctly unpleasant "off cheese" flavour. My wife had a bottled orange drink. She had drunk some of it and then read the label. It said it was "best before end June 2013". We were in there on 2nd November 2013. It was replaced but the bar staff poured the drink, without showing my wife the date on the bottle. My steak and chips was very dry, the meal came on a wooden board, not a proper plate, the steak was lukewarm (but the chips, as in MacDonalds, were in a paper bag, were at least hot). Coffee was OK. Afterwards, some of the young people (aged 12 - 20) went to dance downstairs. The adults were told that they had either to join them or leave at 11.00 pm and return at midnight. They could not sit upstairs, away from the noise, despite the fact that there were vast areas of empty seats. I questioned who would be legally liable for the young people if the adults left, particularly if something went wrong. The manager denied that it would be them, although it was he who was telling the adults what their "choice" was. He said it was a separate company running the room downstairs! So, sorry, but this family man will be reporting this, as will many of the adults there, to their families and friends. A definite "never again".

Recently changed its name to the The Hill. Still exactly the same people inside from what I can make out by the spelling mistakes on the hand-written promotional posters sellotaped to the windows.
A very strange place indeed.

Used this pub a few times several years ago for a late night drink.

Never had any complaints but I haven't been for a while so now the new owners are in it will be worth another visit.

The pizzas were also very good and good value for money.

Question has been taken over fairly recently and it seems the new owners are working hard to make it work. The pizzas are fresh and delicious and prices very reasonable. I haven't been there in in the evening but it's a great place to go for good quality and reasonably priced food during the day, especially if you have kids as it's very child friendly. To me this seems more of a restaurant than a bar but perhaps it's more bar-like in the evenings. I'd say the recent reviews are harsh and this place is much better than the signage outside suggests.

Everything about this place is odd: the decor, the clientele, the colour scheme, the ambience, even the name. The concept of pizza, quizzes, DJs, bands is not unusual or unreasonable, but here it's all a bit desperate. I can't work out what kind of person would make this their bar of choice. Avoid.

Is it just me or does the ceiling in the main bar look like its going to collapse?

I find them alight here, though have seen a couple of nasty fights, but then thats par for the course pretty much everywhere these days (including all the snobby places in East Dulwich).
reverendlionelblair - 27 Jul 2008 09:34
Decent place, great prices, great pizza. Yes, it's the Ikea catalogue in 3D (not much different to my flat, really) but I think that adds to the friendly, unpretentious, neighbourhood-y feel. Place is always clean and tidy and the patio is a nice touch.

My partner and I have eaten here usually a few times a month since moving to FH in 2005, and have never felt intimidated, or noticed it being particularly 'chavvy' - it mostly seems to be, as someone above said, a nice cross section of Forest Hill residents. Some of the bar staff are less friendly and helpful than others - but I doubt there's a bar or restaurant in London of which that isn't true.

Question isn't The Palmerston at East Dulwich, and it's never going to be; but if you're snobby about clientele and atmosphere, then why not travel the few minutes down the road to East Dulwich?

Visited Question yesterday and was decidedly unimpressed. Ordered a salad only to find the salad part of it missing and just ended up with a plate of chicken and bacon in caesar dressing instead. When I placed a complaint with the Management I was told that they appeared to be unable to accommodate my requirements (had only asked for extra lettuce)and that they thought it was best I didn't come back. Having eaten several times in this bar before and having always had excellent food and been dealt with in a respectable manner I found this somewhat
aggressive stance by the owner surprising. I have to agree with the last review placed in October 2006 and say that the service is not what is used to be.

Definitely the best pub in Forest Hill - but that's not hard considering the competition. Unfortunately, the service has gone down hill recently. Went there today at lunchtime and it took 15 minutes for the drinks order to be processed. It wasn't busy so I don't know why it took so long. We ordered our food (nothing fancy just basic stuff like burgers). Two people had to wait ages for theirs. We had all finished by the time theirs came (that's not the first time that's happened). Another two people joined us later on and also had to wait about 15 minutes for drinks. They ordered their food however one person ended up with nothing, so had to get his money back. No apology or anything. The Manager came over and said we should write the order down and drop it in prior to visiting or fax it over. Whats that all about, there were only 6 of us?!?!?! That said, when you eventually get your food it is nice.

I really like question. The staff are always great and helpful and the food is fantastic. Can be a bit chavvy but would not stop me going back.

Got a really cool room downstairs for private parties aswell!
MjHughes - 17 May 2006 15:58
i like this pub but sometimes the music is a bit ropey. good food. good staff
anonymous - 9 May 2006 16:48
Young, chavvy crowd. Look like it was decorated by Linda Barker on a special episode of some TV show but on a Bank Holiday monday when only IKEA was open.

For all that, it's not a bad place. It used to be a proper sh1thole. The pizzas are good - prepared fresh in front of you - and even better value when 2-for-1 (Monday or Tuesday??).

You can also clean up in the quiz - my last visit proved highly profitable.
Beertastingmonkey - 24 Mar 2006 11:59
its nice to know there is an after school club or pub should i say for sydenham girls to attend, i was there a couple of weeks ago and had to leave because of screeching school kids smelling alcohol for the first time, the music also was awful, but their food is good value and they have a great menu, dave the assistant manager is a great bloke who really knows how to make you feel wanted there as a customer, i really feel he is unappreciated by the rest of the managment. this pub has great potential if they got rid of the school children and the intimadating hoodies.
smokie_tearz - 29 Jan 2006 17:02
Have to say I've never felt intimidated here, and never noticed it being especially chavtastic. forest hill isn't clapham and this place is a nice cross section of forest hill. friendly, decent value place to have a drink. even if it is decorated entirely from the ikea catalogue.
ermsey - 14 Dec 2005 14:07
This is a surprisingly good bar with a varied selection of fantastic food and drinks. It has friendy staff who obviously try to make you welcome. The only thing that lets this place down is the awful choice of DJ's and the fact that you always feel intimidated by many of the customers it is a real shame because you can see that the management are trying to improve things but are sadly failing due to the choice of music and the "CHAV" factor.
anonymous - 9 Nov 2005 19:28
Not an amazingly atmospheric place- it's a little bit caught between trying to be a bar and trying to be a pub, but I have to agree with the other comments about the food- very good for the prices you are paying. Two for one on 12 inch pizzas on a Monday night is amazing value. Also, there's a nice little outdoor patio out the back if the weather is good.
Middler - 8 Aug 2005 17:31
Question is definately the best pub in Forest Hill. The food's great, basically the same price as the wetherspoons & it wont give you food poisoning!! Its 100% better than it used to be-The Malt was a dungeon!
ClaireD - 26 Nov 2004 11:03
Question is the most trendy bar in Forest Hill. The extra bonus is the variety of fresh food they serve including gourmet pizza, malaysian, caribbean, sunday lunch and tasty bar menu. It's value for money! Good atmosphere and service.
R&M - 9 Oct 2004 20:54
Question is one of the bestbars in Forest Hill, they have a fantastic menu and the Music they play is wicked, the bar staff and venue are exceptional. as for the 7pm kid kerfew, your kids should be in bed by that time anyways.
Lisa - 15 Sep 2004 09:55

Great pub! I love the new atmosphere and the food is really good as well. I work in the area and go there for lunch at least once a week!
kara tobin - 10 Aug 2004 19:44
I was prompted to try Question because of an article in a local paper that said it was good for families. We went late on a Sunday afternoon and the staff, food and atmosphere was good. The only downfall was that the kids had to be out by 7pm. Being working parents this makes it impossible for a meal out with the kids during the week. I feel that if they were to stretch this to 8pm they would cash in on the large number of parents who would find this place ideal. After all they advertise themselves as a restaurant and even have a childrens menu. I will definatley try and get back there but it won't be as often as I like. Instead it will be back to Uplands in East Dulwich where kids are welcome for dinner.

Micheal had a cracking 40th Birthday in the downstairs cellar bar.....which can be rented out for private parties...well worth a it.....

Used to be known as the Malt Shovel. Great new management team, good food, and the downstairs bar has re-opened as a Sports bar.
Well worth a visit.
