Well, just been reading the review by nokegmuppet and I can assure you that this pub is well and truly missed. The prices were competitive for the area and, thankfully not everyone shared your opinion and when it closed, it was a extremely busy and happy pub. The prices could have been cheaper if it wasn't a tied tenancy with punch but then the down side of cheaper prices is that it appeases people like you who won't let landlords have a salary because of the penny pinching attitude you endorse. I have noticed you have not been active for nearly two years. Hopefully you have gone the same way as the bowling green. Doubt you will be missed.

Gone, firmly boarded up. A pub with pretensions and prices that were rather silly, even in the "new" Manchester.
Missed, i doubt it!

This pub is Perfect, Great ales and loads of unusual bottles. bar staff really friendly and full of chatty locals. Even the jukebox is full of classics. GO TO THIS PUB !!!!!!!! OUR NEW LOCAL

One of the few traditional places remaining in the area and definitely worth seeking out. Has a slight country pub feel, which it probably was before being engulfed by the university and hospital. However, it's a very relaxing place to while away an hour or two and the St Austells Tribute was excellent, if a little expensive. It would be a shame to see it go the same way as many of the nearby pubs that have sadly closed. Give it a go.

Visited recently. OK, single room pub. Black Sheep Ale wasn't up to much.

Have to say I'm surprised at the postivity here. I chose it on the basis of these comments to meet a friend before going to the Academy. Bit tatty inside. Far from rammed, it was dead - and it smelt. I then ordered a pint of Black Sheep which had clearly been in the barrel too long with a slight vinegar nose. I left the pub after 15 minutes with most of the pint untouched. Avoid would be my advice. If you want a bit of life, try the Oxford on the main road - much cleaner, livelier and a decent pint of Deuchars.

A bit pricey, but it's worth it for a laid back atmosphere and a good pint. Nicer surroundings than the Grafton just down the road, and doesn't tend to be too rammed.

wow ... what a breath of fresh air into what i would say is a very moderate area for decent pubs. Went in the BG last week because i had heard about its new menu. My only concern about going back into the pub was that it was under the same management it was under last time i was in back in summer 04 but thank god it wasn't. Give the place a try ... excellent manu comprising of Kangaroo burgers, Springbok & othe exotic burgers & also a superb sauasage menu and all at reasonable prices (better than being ripped off in the pretentious Kro bar & rampant lion or getting crap food at the Oxford & the Varsity) and the staff and the management have all changed for the better .. so if you haven't tried it for a couple of years or so .. give it a whirl and sample the recently refurbished BG. It also stocks a fantastic range of beers incl. trad and a amazing digital jukebox.

A good pub

Nice pub, with a pool table and proper beer. Much better than the Rampant Lion.

I believe the pub is fantastic and the food is excellent. Perfect for a relaxing drink

Cheap beer for pre-gig boozing is the only benefit. 1.20 a pint is a damn sight better than 2.55 for a can in the Academy.

It had a quiz machine, a monopoly one, did they get rid of it? also, a jukebox, which is a feature that you perhaps be searchable by, as I quite like jukeboxes. :)
