clean tidy, well kept greene king ales. nice outdoor area by the river

The Pen & Parchment has a nice location next to the river and the canal in Stratford. Unfortunately our visit coincided with a heavy rain shower. So the pub didn't appear quite as nice as in the photo above! But it was a welcome respite from the rain. Being a Greene King pub, the selection was limited to IPA, Abbot and another called Poet's Ink. The only free tables were reserved for non-existent diners. We were too wet to worry about that and duly occupied one. Diners around us were complaining about their food. Being a tourist town, Greene King can probably get away with this. The worst of the 6 Stratford pubs we sampled.

Very well cooked and presented food and good range of beer. Staff polite and efficient

Seemingly less food choice now since our previous visit a year ago. Still nice food and decent pint.
|
Very ordinary Greene King pub with their usual range of keg beers and no hand-pulled real ale.
|
Good VFM. Two meals for 10. Made welcome by the staff, quick efficient service food nice and good selection of ales. Will definately visit again next time in Stratford!
|
Not bad at all: OK food, good beer, pleasant staff.

Was not expecting much from previous reviews, but what a great pub, good cask ales - tried the Abbot which was well kept and would have had a few more if I wasn't driving. Currently have a two meals deal for 9.95 which was served quickly, hot and delicious - will definitely use again if passing

Very enjoyable sitting outside in the sunshine drinking Aspall's cyder - very busy on a Saturday afternoon - manager and staff credit to their trade

This pub has been ripped out and improved like most pubs in Stratford. Its only small but still manages to be soulless, it probably used to be a nice little local. Its aimed at the tourist trade with the whole place being full of dining tables and chairs. Its got exactly the same menu as The Garrick and The Dirty Duck so theyre probably all owned by the same people. Four handpumps on the bar all serving beer from the Greene King stable. GK IPA, Abbot and XX Mild (a bit of a surprise that one) plus Morlands Old Original. I had a pint of the mild which was pretty good.
Now for the bad news. They had a Xmas Tree AND a large snowman automaton in the pub, it was still October you muppets! Now for the even worse news. We asked at the bar where Coxs Yard was as we knew it was nearby, but couldnt spot it in the dark. We were pointed in the right direction but were told You dont want to go there, they dont sell real ale (they do) and the foods crap (it isnt). They then gleefully pointed out a large framed poster on the wall of a newspaper article criticising the other pub. Sorry guys this really isnt on, you dont slag off your nearest neighbour by having negative reviews about it on your walls. Grow up.

Excellent food, good choice of draft ales. Extremely busy for a Friday afternoon.Though a nice start to a weekend break in Stratford.
|
This pub will benefit no end from the Non Smoking laws! Roll on 1st of July.
Abbot was good this weekend but to avoid the stench of tobacco we had to sit outside.
|
we found this to be a bustling and very friendly place where the sunday carvery was enjoyable and the pint wasnt too bad as well. It is only small but i imagine it would be lovely in the summer when you can sit outside by the river.

Souless pub with totally average boring food. Staff are ok. Bad location as it's right by a tourist bus point.

Great pub, good ales, friendly staff and quality food.
|
Very much located to catch the tourists so does lose any great sense of atmosphere. However the staff are very nice, it's quiet out-of-tourist-season and do a fine pint of ale!
|
Decidedly average, tourist trap pub. Beer OK but no atmosphere.

Excellent setting on river for this good looking pub, shame the interior disappoints but the excellent Harvestons makes up for the lack of design. We got a lecture on TV from 2 girls propping up the bar (surprising they could draw themselves away from their prefered entertainment) Menu is the same as at the Dirty Duck but served is lesser surroundings

A chain pub doing decent priced and quality food with seating outside in the summer. Close to Waterfront and the RSC. Landlady is a porter and dark ale fan Landlord likes it lighter - always a good variety of real ales on and an ever changing list. Beers are in tip top condition - there's usually 3 to 7 available. Also sells decent non 'ruined in Burton on Trent' l*g*er and a range of wines and spirits
