Wonderfully isolated so really only accessible by car or in the middle of a long walk, this place gets most things right. It's not overly 'gastro' so the empahsis is on pub standards such as roasts while It's good to see Brakspear Bitter and Oxford Gold on cask. Friendly service and the overall feel is a lack of pretension. The vast majority of customers are there to dine.

Much improved since we last attended about two years ago. Is it under new management? Staff are now relaxed, friendly and polite. Pleasantly busy on a mild Friday evening at the end of May. Drinks now much cheaper. Two years ago a pint of real ale and a Bacardi and Coke cost £8.30, now only £5.75. I asked if this was correct and was assured that it was. Good to see the place relatively busy and nice not to feel exploited. Will certainly return for an evening drink in the sunshine.

Expensive and small portions. Although it was not busy it was a struggle to get through the door and to the bar as unwelcoming locals form a bit of barricade after polite excuse me managed to get them to move about an inch. Shame nice location

In descending order:
Stunning view. Ales straight from the cask. Good perfectly OK but menu tired and old-fashioned. Service - as has been remarked - poor. Regulars Blimpish - a truly miserable lot.

8.30 for a Bacardi & Coke and a pint of Wychwood. 8.30!

Splendid isolated pub with fabulous views over the Chilterns. Good for walkers - dogs welcomed. Went there some years ago when the present landlord opened and was impressed then. Went there last week and again impressed with the pub, the view, the beer and the food. Menu is varied and large and prices compare with those in Henley for similar type of pubs i.e not the Hotel du Vin! The landlord is NOT grumpy !!

13 of us had lunch here at the end of a wet and blustery walk. When we booked we were told to arrive by 12:30 or our table would be given to someone else! The food was good - the shoulder of lamb was excellent - but the portions were on the small side, particularly the desserts. Grumpy landlord served the teas and coffees at the end and even managed a smile at one point - which warmed us to him, until we saw that the teapots were only half full! Still, not a bad place all in all.

In the middle of nowhere, this pub is a welcome haven halfway on a twelve mile walk. Beer straight from the barrel was excellent - Breakspears and Ringwood. Two ladies behind bar were welcoming - no sign of infamous grumpy landlord. Red Arrows gave a display whilst we were sitting outside ! Only one adverse comment - food although fine was in fairly small portions and was quite expensive for what it was - 11.50 for a smallish pie with a small side portion of vegetables. Asked for some chips but this order did not seem to reach the kitchen.

Worth a drive out to sit in the garden and enjoy the view. Good car park. Decent clientele. Only two ales but straight from the cask and well kept. Grumpy landlord adds to the character of the place and a little tongue in cheek I think. Didn't try the food but plenty of people eating and it looked good. Worth a visit.

Just had a delicious Kleftico shoulder of lamb would highly recommend. Good pint of Brakspears as well.
|
Super location and views. good beer ,oxford gold , helpfull staff only let down by quality of food which was poor (veg lasgane was bland mostly pasta) small portions and expensive 9.00 for small portion of lasagne and limp salad. would return for beer and suroundings only

Visit this pub about twice a year. Last visit on 18/01/09. Views beautiful. Landlord grumpy and not at very welcoming but food was very good.
|
Visited here for thr first time 19/7/08, lovely pub with great views, very nice Brakspears Oxford Gold, didn't have a chance to try the food unfortunately. Only criticism, landlord not very welcoming, but probably not fair to judge on the basis of one visit. Would definitely go back.

I have fond memories of this pub i used to love popping in for a pint and a roll. Sit by the fire in the Winter and so on. When i last went in the Summer they had a BBQ going outside and it was 10.00 for a burger. Sad really.

Revisited after a long - maybe more than 10 year break. Not of course what it was - it hadn't changed much in decades when I knew it before. I wonder where all the farm implements went. But not at all bad for a 21st century country pub. A bit too sanitised, menu a bit too pretentious, can't have a sandwich, all the usual stuff. They've got draught lager now which is a shame, its absence used to keep the riffraff away.
But the Brakspears is spot on and still on gravity stillage and the views are as perfect as ever. Well worth an expedition.

The setting is hard to beat, views over rolling hills with rabbits playing in the field in front of you as you lower a few local ales - lovely and remote albeit a wee bit quiet the night we were in. Great portions of food.

Difficult to find but well worth the effort Im Bias but i like it here ! pop in and say Hi

Fabulous location, a bit pricey (especially the starters) but good food & ale. One for the summer!
|
This pub is in the middle of nowhere but well worht the find. Get up there on a nice summers evening I cannot think of a better place to be. Beer well kept as well.
|
awesome little pub tucked away, overlooking its own little valley in the hills, definately a top notch summer pub - ( little too cosy in side for any numbers of people and food is indede pricey - although not too bad)
like most pubs these days the previous incarnation with previous landlord (who I believe sadly passed away??) was more traditional and before it was discovered by the masses.
we used to frequent it as annoying yoofs on little Motorbikes out for a friday pint O' scrumpy, and still go back to this day, despite having "grown up".
A great place for a sunday ride - (on a proper bike), or a scenic drive. take the good lady wife / mistress -she will be impressed.

A fine, if remote location, with great Chiltern views and excellent local walking on the Ridgeway.
Benches outside for sunny days, BBQs in summer, and roaring fires in winter.
Excellent food, and well-kept Brakspears beers.
|
A truly fantastic pub on a summers day or sat by the open fire in winter. Great ales

A lovely little pub, nestled amoungst the surrounding countryside. Friendly staff, great food and very traditional. Even uses old barrels for its own ales, no pumps.

Difficult to find, but well worth it! Sit outside in the summer with a pint of Brakspears and enjoy the fantastic views. The food is good, but on the expensive side for what you get. and the dining area gets VERY busy. The staff are normally friendly, but they can be so rushed that they sometimes don't have time for the simple pleasantries. Go early on a summer's evening, before it gets crowded.
