Have had many a nice pint here after shooting at the local clay shooting ground up the road, food always looks good but never tried it, friendly staff

Not far from the Trent and Mersey Canal. Beer from Hook Norton and UBU (Purity) - both in good condition.

Clean looking Vintage Inn with their standard menu,so most punters are here for the food. However you can drink in the area close to the bar and the staff are friendly.Very well kept TT Landlord ,which was a pleasant surprise but probably not the sort of establishment for a really heavy session.

Visit 22-9-2007: Another big pub chain faceless pub. Reasonable pint of Bass bitter, the only Cask Ale available (had keg pedigree and speckled hen but Id rather drink my own urine) Reasonable food, but the Pie crust was like leather and the 12oz steak had 5oz of fat trim your meat chef! But there again mass produced food cooked by robots not creative chefs. Dont go out of your way to visit.

Reasonable food-led chain pub in a pleasant setting on the road between Stafford and Rugeley. Two beers on tap when I visited: Bass and quite a well-served Timothy Taylor Landlord. Our party of five were all fed well: service was prompt, apart from when we went to pay our bill. Wouldn't go here for an evening's boozing, but fine for a meal.

This pub has recently undergone a mini refurbishment, the banging kitchen door that has been mentioned has been addressed. It is a welcoming pub, with friendly staff and well prepared food. Although the food is not "home cooked" it is of a good standard and better than most pubs of the same chain. It is worth a visit for the views across the river and the welcome that you receive.

Don't understand the previous posts, although they are some while ago. Went there today (9.12.06) for the first time and we had 3 wonderful meals, good value served promptly by pleasant staff. The 'Whale of a fish' is just that. Get your practice in as it takes some eating and is real quality. If I wanted to be really picky I would suggest chunky chips with the meals instead if the thin type, and they really need to sort out the kitchen door. They are obviously used to it, but it does your head in by its continual banging. Overall.............will visit again If anyone knows them perhaps you might mention the door, I am too frugal to ring up. Merry Christmas to you all

We went to this pub on our wedding anniversary this year. As we were travelling along the canal it looked like a good place to stop. The welcome was very good and the staff were all very pleasant. The only downside to the visit was the food. The children and my husband enjoyed their meals but I suppose I must be fussier. I don't expect restaurants to serve packet mashed potato and 'steamed vegetables' should be more than leeks and carrots.

You can sure see how this pub has gone down hill...Used to be mine -and others[!!!] local; served grat beer and very good ambassadorial country pub cooking. You could have had duck -wild - shot that day by the landlord amongst other country fare. NOW!!! You would have thought IKEA had furnished the place. Excuse me sir - Where do I pay for this light coloured, pretend wood and brass product. As for the food...all prefabricated rubbish and what some might say a disappointment to selling English fare to tourists. You see, I brought a load of tourists over from Canada to see this pub that I used to frequent. I had been raving about a good pub, selling good ales; dark and oaked tables with fireplace and good REAL food. Alas they (100%) and I were QUITE disappointed. Now the Bell on the Newport Road about 3 miles past Stafford castle, their food was fantastic, and with REAL hand cut chips. Wild this and wild that too. The decor though was not as I used to remember the Wolseley Arms.
