Large Ember Inn, very close to West Wickham station. Very much geared towards food / families eating, which inevitably leads to long queues at the beer. Rathers annoying as it's just by the station so had dropped by for a quick one whilst waiting for a train Visited on on a Monday which is Ember Inn £2.49 for ale day which was a bonus.

Decent food and good range of beer. Service a bit slow at the bar with staff not great at identifying who is next.
Nothing remarkable as such other than a gathering of young males who like a bit of banter and get proper mugged off when somebody cuts them up on the Addington Road. Probably given to a cheeky Magners now and then. Wear Gant shoes. No socks.

Pretty busy on the Thursday evening I visited this food led pub for a few beers with a pal before football locally.
Opposite the station in a perfect location, the pub occupies a large plot and has plenty of outside seating separated from the road by a white picket fence. Inside the décor is netural and homely with plenty of tables and chairs for diners, aswell as stools and high tables.
6 hand pumps with 4 ales on. Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter was drinkable but its worth noting all the ales are from gravity.
The first time I have been here and it’s decent enough and in a handy location for the station.
Food was of course popular, I didn’t look at the menu to check prices but it looked good from the plates I saw served up.

This is a busy pub, serving a large area of west wickham. However the bar staff leave a lot to be desired. We normally go here most Friday early evenings. This last few weeks we have had staff who cough and sneeze into their hands and then serve customers without washing their hands, There is a large container under the bar for empty bottles, and one member of staff in particular likes to throw the bottles in there. Now Nick Lowe might like empty beer bottles crashing into a container, but it's not very nice when you are trying to have a chat. Then this week, we ordered a few pints of Peroni, and when asked to top one of them up to the pint mark, this was met by a look and attitude as if we has asked something outrageous. At over £4 a pint, I want a full pint. Without sniggering from staff. They have just lost our custom. The Jolly Woodman in Beckenham is a bit of a trek, but it's a proper pub, and that's where we will be on Fridays from now on.

This is truly an awful pub. Although i have not eaten there so can't personally comment on the food, while standing at the bar I overheard someone else asking for their bill to be reduced because of poor quaility. It's devoid of any atmosphere other than its plastic decoration and I think I had my worst ever pint of London Pride there last night. Don't even think about going there.

I have always found the water in the gents so hot it scalds your hands. Unless the kitchen staff use a different feed of water, I assume they also have the same problem which makes me question the hygiene standards.
|
The service in here is comical. Don't do it!
|
No no no... you don't want to be drinking here. Or eating. Stay away.

Harveys Best is now a regular.

Very little right with this pub. The beer is dreadful in every respect - badly kept and inexpertly poured. The staff are dreadful and it feels like one of the most generic chain pubs I've ever been to. I only end up there because my friend refuses to go to the Swan.
|
The good point about this pub is the food. It is actually not too bad. The beer is okish but the bar staff seem to be biased against anyone over 40 !. It is possible to grow a reasonable beard waiting to be served. Decor is ok but as with any chain pub you could be in any of them - there is not much charm or uniqueness...
|
Strange things are happening at this pub. The junior staff have taken over - and no one is managing. As a result, egotistical paranoia rules in the main. Attitude of staff and in particular the manager is at times bizarre. There is a tension in the air and it no longer feels like a family pub - merely a teenagers drinking den.

I'm not one for generally posting reviews but I felt I just had to after the dismal "meal" we had last night. We spent 14 on "haddock" - more like a big fish finger, in fact, that's an insult to fish fingers! As for my OH's "game pie" with crusty (oh yes) "mash" with fork imprints - I would imagine you get better food in prison!
The barman asked us if "everything was ok" and out of character for us we replied "no, not at all, that has to be the worst meal we've ever had, anywhere", alas, he skulked off back behind the bar and that was the end of that.
We went merrily (thanks to empty stomachs) on our way home for some toast!

good barstaff, good food, good clientele, good selection of drink, though feels a little like a hotel lobby
|
normal chain pub no atmosphere but plenty of youngsters who make anyone over thirty feel old.
staff were ok food pre packed nothing to write home about
|
Nice pub with friendly bar staff. Had one of my first pints in this place and it was an enjoyable afternoon. Often very busy which gives the place a nice atmosphere. Drinks are reasonably priced.
|
Now an Ember Inn.
Can't fault the selection at the bar but the atmosphere is sterile and clientele are less than progressive.
|
Heaving with girls - a great place to get your end away.
|
Well decorated, clean with freindly.Typical ember Inn really. Freidnly staff too. Good pub for my regular drink on a Friday afternoon. Always has seemed to come a close second to the crown...I probably think that because im a Shirley boy to be fair.
|
Usual sort of pub, nice choice of beers but i think that they should clean the lines more because the beer is rubbish!
|
This pub is alrite... standard Ember Inn prices etc. had a refurb recently.. can't say it's done much. The atomsphere I feel is awkward. You'll find chavs and metrosexual men and the girls come across very bitchy. I had a very uncomfortable experience here. Other than that usual Ember extra apply, such as quiz nights.
|
Much of the pub is non smoking; take that as you will. Reasonable choice of beers, with guest beers, but no games. Pleasant for families and codgers. Make up your own mind if you fall into that description.

In here on 23 December 2005 - First time for many moons. Whilst it was obviously packed, there was room to stand comfortably, and after a while we got seats.
The staff were all v friendly (especially the girl who served my lager top - Bless Her) and the beer was cold.
Not sure about the decor though - reminded me of someones front room. Clean and tidy though - would go again if in the area.

Great pub and I am in love with the brunette barmaid who I see in there every Sunday afternoon! Does anyone know her name?! She has a mole just above her mouth and is gorgeous!!!
Will never stop drinking in there!

I have had many an attack of insanity within these lovely fag stained walls. Ive fallen over chairs, broken sign posts, smashed glasses and even leered at rather unattractive bar maids. My exploits are famed within this establishment, long may it bring joy to the special and not so special amongst us.
Mad rich forever

The Railway used to be a noisy place with nothing much to commend it. Now the beer is often excellent and one can always find a good pint. Foodoff after 8 p.m. is a pain as the comfortable chairs and sofas make it a good place to relax before facing walking the dog.

The railway has a nice comfortable feel about it, with good decor and it's not very smokey. It's a shame that the food is not served after 8pm because otherwise I think it would be a great place for dinner.

Due to growing up in West Wickham i have been going to The Railway since i was old enough to drink. Like all the other pubs in WW it has gone through various changes in the last 10 years and personally i quite like it's current incarnation. There is a good selection of guest ales, lots of seating and even the toilets are nice. In fact i would go as far as to say it's the only pub in West Wickham that's worth visiting.

Another clone of every other subhurban south east English pub, in a subhurban south east English town. Soul-less and atmosphereless. A typical Ember Inn.
