If being charged £13.70 for a ridiculously flat pint of Heineken and a large glass of white wine by a stuck up barman is your bag then I'd go there. Otherwise avoid.

Dreadful, dreadful service.
My wife and I just made an attempt at having Sunday lunch at the Coat and Badge in Putney. We had to give up and ask for a refund it was such a frustrating and unenjoyable experience. Our general observations were that no-one seemed to be in charge, it looked like there was total confusion behind the bar and the staff all seemed to get involved in or consult each other over every order.
Specifically our Sunday lunch experience entailed…
Firstly we asked for a slight variation on the Sunday roast menu (which only had three things on it) and the bar girl had to consult three people before going back into the kitchen to confirm that 'no' we couldn't change the menu.
So we ordered two coffees to come straight away with a bread basket and then two Sunday roasts – just over £40. Not a complicated order.
After a long wait, I had to go up to find out what was happening with our coffees only to find that someone had started making them and then forgotten about them as they were sitting under the coffee machine. When we got them they were half full.
After a further wait, I then had to go up again to find out what was happening with the bread basket. The waiter asked who took our order, raised his eyes when I told him, checked the computer and said that we could have someone else’s – handing me a bread basket. The bread was hard in places.
After over an hour the Sunday roasts arrived. Whilst the Yorkshire pudding was hot, my roast beef and my wife’s chicken was cold. The vegetables still had not arrived. By this point we were totally fed up and I asked to speak to the manager. Our waitress, Jen, told me that she was the manager. I explained that we had had a dreadful experience and wanted a refund. She went off and came back with £30 explaining that she would refund us for the roasts and didn’t offer any apology. I said that I felt she should refund us the entire bill emphasising the fact that this is not an experience that I felt I should pay for. She disappeared and came back, pushed ten pounds in my hand and stormed off without saying anything.
My wife then spoke to another member of staff who said she was actually the manager. My wife’s main point was that the waitress’s behaviour was unacceptable. The “manager” shrugged her shoulders, claimed she knew nothing about it and finally offered a belated apology; at which point we left.

Came in last night after football and was surprised to see that they only had 1 real ale available across their 3 hand pumps…this was their own beer brewed for them by Wells & Young, it was pretty decent but smelt like it was slightly on the turn.
My 2nd visit here the last one being about 7 years ago. It’s a lovely looking pub with a large area to the front with heaters and lots of tables and chairs. Inside there is a large quantity of rowing memorabilia on the walls but this place is a bit too pouncy for me.
A quick pint and it was time to move on.
I totally agree with papamike , the Jolly Gardeners is a much better pub.
I must be missing something. Best pub in Putney.. not likely. Walk past this one and head to the Jolly Gardeners about 2 mins down the road.
One of the best pubs in Putney, although perhaps a bit overpriced on the food side. Attracts nice looking people, which is a good plus, but does mean that a table outside on a summer evening can be difficult to find! ASR
Got to be the best pub in Putney and my favourite south of the river. The new staff are nice and friendly and come round with free snacks at tea-time. Gets very busy on sunny days but the staff do cope (just about). Nice real ales and nice food. Just left after spending the afternoon in a deck chair in the garden with a nice cold fizzy beer. Brilliant!
A good pub with good beer. Only down side is that you can't get simple food like a cheese sarnie, why would I want a rap with beans and guacamole?
Terrible service in here on Saturday. Typical scenario...staff serving whoever they see first and not who was next. Beer average and the pub is geared to food and the drinkers come a poor second. Awful.
Must agree about the Sharps Cornish. Surprisingly very well kept. My grumbling old man and myself had a very austere time relaxing in front of the fire. I had a monstrous piece of fish that was marvelous. Very nice waiter too.
Really really nice. Had a good (if pricey) Sunday dinner. Watched the football and had a few beers. A really nice ambience to the pub. All the staff attentive to our needs and actually were smiling. I'll be revisiting for sure.
Cornish Ale served well over 200 miles from its origin. Well done
Best pub by far in Putters! Awesome atmosphere for the rugby. Brains SA, Sharps Cornish and Doombar on tap. Food pretty good. Only flaw is it gets a little too busy when the sport is on.
For where this pub is situated it could do alot better but not a terrible place by any means. Tribute, bombadier and Sharps Doom bar all pretty well kept, being a cornish man myself the tribute went down a treat. didint try the food. The major flaw i found with this pub is the volume of the music they inflict on its clientele which is quite a mixed bag itself. Also literally left to sit in the dark to finish my pint after last orders.. very rude staff who really couldnt of cared less.
Good pint but not a place you can sit down and enjoy with a book.
went in here with a friend and his son for a quick drink before a fulham game, we bought drinks and a snack and found a seat and sat happily for 15mins. We we were then set upon by one bar maid after another literally demanding that we moved to cater for those eating sunday lunch...one even suggested the 'sunday lunch crowd' had booked...she was so condesending! And on asking the said customer - they hadn't booked. The manager arrived - he tried to find an alernative table but didn't make much effort and didn't. Frankly a crap experience in a bog standard pub with rude staff and why oh why the 2.2 crowd are so keen to eat in there gould only knows! Ah but it is middling putney isn't it..
Decent boozer with a good range of beer on tap. Good place to watch sport with 3 screens. Definitely worth a visit on the weekend.
We held a Christmas party here for 20, and the staff couldn't have been more helpful - even holding the kitchen open for us as some people turned up late. Great food too. All in all top quality service and excellent pub environment, very highly recommended - especially for groups.
Yet another change of management. New one seems nice and friendly and seems to know his business. Wait and see if he makes it past the 6 month wall that all the other guvs failed to pass.
Food was disappointing. Friend asked if he could have a yorkshire pudding with his meal (when it was included in other meals) and was told "sorry, the chef is not customising any meals today"! How hard could it be to take a yorkshire puddding from one meal and add it to another??!! Another meal had the most horrible fish - no flavour and very watery.
Disappointing atmosphere and rather expensive for what we got served.
Very poor (not a reflection on staff however - they were nice and only doing their job) A friend recieved a less then average piece of fish and when asked about it by a member of staff, the staff member agreed that the fish was not very nice and probably a 'bad batch'... which begs the question why would you knowingly serve your customers bad food that your own staff dont even like?!!!!!! then to add insult to injury we were asked to leave our table within 5min of finishing our meal to drink the rest of our drinks elsewhere in the bar (bought with the meal and less than half a pint to go...) i thought this was very very bad and would not go back - neither should you! there are plenty of much better pubs in the area
the food is aweful... other than that its got a good atmosphere the times we have been. If it showed rugby matches eg. tri-nations, it would be even better.
The usual Geronimo Inns deal - not quite as upmarket as it would like to be, but still a bit better than most of the local competition. Three real ales on, including a perfectly respectable pint of Tribute. Got missed by one barmaid who just served whoever happened to be in front of her and/or people she recognised, but another saw what was going on and made an effort to get me a beer so full marks to her.
A good pub. Cant see why they have them cheap tables and chairs outside when they have such a lovley inside.
Good pub and a good, decent crowd.
Not bad, a bit 'la di da' for me, but good to see Doom Bar on. Reasonable price too. I'd go there again with my girlfriend, but not with the boys.
Been a regular at this pub for sometime, but must confess that I was disapointed with the Coat and Badge yesterday. I went there with my girlfriend and her friends to enjoy a couple before we headed out, but felt very uncomfortable and left to go to Jollys. It was an awesome day, but there was quite a rough crowd of "lads" watching the football. Granted, it was a Fulham home game, but management need to determine who their customer base is and focus their efforts on attracting that crowd. If you want to watch the foo'ie with your mates, may I recommend the Walkabout or the Fox- the bouncers there will be happy to let you in....
"Obliged" and "rim". D'oh
Ok pub, very nicely done on the inside, but perhaps a little too much like a restaurant once you wander round to the right of the bar.
Only Doom Bar on when I went in, and had to ask for a top up from the very friendly barman who obiged without fuss. Odd that I should have to ask given it was about 2cm off the tim though.
Seemed like a young, affluent crowd - typical for the area - and wasn't overly busy for a Thursday. Will definitely go back but they need to sort out the pint discipline.
Quite enjoyed myself here altho that may be tempered coz I was with a great group of friends. Pity that there was a group of four utterly drunken idiots nearby who were just too loud and too drunken for my liking. Shame nothing was done about them as they were starting to annoy many people within earshot.
Otherwise a fab little place!! Like the barman too....
Popped in the Coat & Badge last night. Nice selection of Cornish ales, nice clientele, good seats by the fire, all ruined by the filthiest glasses I think I've ever been served anything in!
Would echo Strongers' comments below too. Nice friendly bar staff but prone to disappearing!
Recomend you walk past it and head for the Jolly Gardners instead.
Its not a Mitchells and Butler pub. Good beer, ok food and great atmosphere=more of an evening drinking pub than a quiet pint but still worth visiting.
I have stopped using this Mitchel and Butler's pub, slow service and quality and portion control mandated by the brewery. (They refill the ketchup bottles with new ketchup, they have had exploded bottles drenching customers with ketchup. I was one) This practice is unhealthy and poor practice.
Adnams, Doom Bar and lots of premium lagers are available in this gastro pub. I found the barmaid to be friendly, but the punter after me had to wait a while as all the staff seemed to disappear round the back for quite some time.
There is a covered/uncovered beer garden at the front of the pub with a BBQ to the side. The inside of the pub is very open to make it easy for the waitresses. The only real redeeming feature I could find was the plasma screen, but Im not sure that I would really want to watch the football in here anyway.
Nice to hear the former Page manager is now here. Should see the C&B take a swift upturn.
hi people,i recently visited this public house on awonderful balmy friday evening for the first time ,meeting up with some friends .i had what i can only discrbe as a pagesque type of evening(people of richmond will know what i mean !)good quality staff, food ,back ground music .the general ambiance was relaxed and lively at the same time (ie lively and safe )it was great to see some sport on tv ,but not intrusive enough to annoy non sporty people on there evening out.i will be going back for more .
Nice pub ,but staff are stuck up.They act as if they are too good to serve you.
Never really been able to make my mind about about the Bloater (nickname unexplainable on a family site) - the music's often far too loud (and I like music in pubs a lot - but I also like talking) and the beer's variable but I suspect that's not really the point of this pub - there's a lively Putney crowd and always lots going on. I'd rather tackle the Jolly G around the corner but there's definitely worse pubs in Putney.
Great pub, cosy feel, good food, almost an perfect package......except poor staff and absurdly expensive beer, which ruins it a bit.
An excellent pint of London Pride and friendly staff served us here. Lively, clean and pleasent pub. 8/10
Usually pass by en route to Bricklayers but stepped in today & pleasantly surprised to find Doombar on handpump, also Pride & A.N.Other. Doombar ok, but 1.55 for halfpint!!! Too modern & lacking in character for my liking, probably does well on summer weekends with large seated outdoor area as you enter, likely to be horrendous if that's true.
Went to this pub before a football game at Fulham as the queue at the Whetherspoons was 3 deep at the bar. Much quicker service in here, though I will admit it got busier by the time I left. Good selection of real ales (3GBP a pint), that appeared to be well kept though this could be due to the amount being sold on that day.
A pub not short on critics, which is a good sign. One of the area's top pubs which could teach many of them a lesson or four !!
Great location, terrible service.
At almost 4 a pint you'd think it would at least be a decent pint, but it isn't.
And don't even think about popping in for a "quick pint" you'll be spitting feathers by the time it arrives...
Putney suffers from a real lack of good pubs and The Coat and Badge does nothing to help change this unfortunate state of affairs.
This place might be okay if you want a quick drink and a bite to eat with the ladyfriend, but in terms of character is has very little. If you like your pubs bland, dull and full of Aussies, then this is the place to come.
However, if you want to drink in a pub that actually has some character about it, best to miss this one altogether and continue the 100 yards up the road to The Jolly Gardners.
Not exactly the most diverse pub in the world - everyone seemed cloned from the same shop display at Gap and I came out with an Australian accent. Food's ok if you get hungry whilst in there but wouldn't go there specifically for that. The garden's the big draw. Harmless, safe, bland. Very side-street Putney.
This is a really good local pub, it's one of my faves in Putney. The only downside is the food- it's over priced and horrible (although the BBQ is better in the summer). The Coat & Badge is a great pub to go for drinks with your mates all year round!
This place goes through phases. A few years ago it was fantastic, good beer and atmosphere (although food was expensive). Then it became the wrost pub in Putney, now it is getting better. When its good, its very very good, when its bad....
Not a bad place, not tried the food here. Always packed in the summer, typically overrun with aussies and locals.
Rubbish, characterless pub, overpriced food, cr@p beer and sh1te staff, get to the Temperance across the river, much more value for money!
Quite a nice place. Food was good and portions pretty generous, but still quite pricey for what it was. Beer also cost more than you'd expect.
That aside, nice calm atmosphere, bar staff friendly and attentive and the garden is great in the summer, if you can get a seat.
anonymous - 8 Feb 2007 13:45 |
Thee up its own arse. Look at the specials menu. How long do they take to say 'liver and bacon with mash'. Talked to a nice SE London girl who doesn't drink bitter either.
Not really sure where to start.... firstly the hot barmaid has left (bugger) the beer is expensive and the food so ovepriced it was like you were eating at Gordon Ramsey's kitchen or something (but the food would look better and taste better) The stafF are great esp. Keri, Kay & Bas! always willing to have a chat with you!
Would go back but it's boring as anything
Nice beer garden, decent service, OK selection of real beer, but the prices are far too high for their own good (pub commonly known as the 'Scrote and Badge' in my school days!
Good food on Sundays (which is the only time I can comment on), but avoid anything on the menu that screams 'deep-fried' or even simply 'fried' - the chef takes no prisoners. I can't even remember what I had to drink now, which makes for a pretty useless post. Maybe a Guinness, and perhaps a Deuchars, but nothing I had was below par. A busy place in even vaguely clement weather, but the staff exhibit little grace under pressure when it fills up and they need to pay more attention to the lavs which have been the epitome of rankness. Seems that the hygiene threshold of the rugger bugger regulars must be rather lower than mine, a view reinforced by the charming conversation about competitive puking which I felt privileged to overhear. These obnoxious types aside, the C&B ticks the boxes in most areas.
staff seem scared to talk to customers or ask if the food is ok and the toilets need painting a different colour. otherwise food is great and it's a really cosy place. definitely come back.
Odd how you can go to a pub one night and it's great and then the next time it's awful. I went in recently and got bolshy service and warm glasses, while the music was so loud you had to shout at people sitting opposite you to get heard. Plus someone had thrown up in the sink which is shared between men and women - still hadn't been cleared up when we left hour later.
I'll go back again because I'm hoping they were just having a bad night.
anonymous - 2 Oct 2006 15:40 |
A decent pub with prompt and friendly service.
When the weather is like it is now I don't think there's a better place to have a beer. I have, however, had a few bad experiences here. Firstly, the food. A pair of us ordered potato wedges, one lot where burnt to a crisp, mine were raw. It can't be that difficult to get potatoes right! Also, it cost me 840 for two Kronenbourg Blancs! Thank God I'd won on the National otherwise I'd have fainted.
That said, the staff have been top notch to me.
Marvellous!! The reviews below have got it exactly right. The Coat doesn't rely on people who read this to have a great time. The place is effectively busy all the time. A sign that they've got the mix just right. The place is becoming too regular on my social calender lately but each time I visit I have the craic!! It's welcoming to be able to have a friendly conversation whilst the sometimes over friendly guys are mixing my drink. If only there were more pubs like this!
anonymous - 23 Feb 2006 19:18 |
Beer good, but beware short measures & expensive. Bar staff complained about me having my coat on the floor by my stool!
This is a good pub. I always forget about it and then find mysrlf plesantly suprised when I go back. it has a very welcoming atmosphere - a great escape from the trash on the high street.
Went with a group of mates to this pub last Sunday to try the sunday roast. It was bloody awful, stay well away. Admittedly we were a large-ish group (8-10) but we had to wait over 1.5 hrs for any food, served by unhelpful staff, the portion sizes were small (certainly not worth a tenner) and most of what was served up was cold and had to be sent back to be microwaved! On top of this they couldn't even get the bill right (c.15 of drinks added that we didn't order). Really don't know why they bother with food if they can't do it even vaguely competently. The waitress was apologetic when I complained but by then the damage had already been done.
Avoid.
anonymous - 1 Nov 2005 10:39 |
I gave this pub a second chance last night and wished to God I hadn't. Had to send a pint of beer back because it was awful, only got attitude from pompous bar staff in return. Their mates spent the time sat at the bar, leering at women and blowing smoke in the faces of blokes buying their drinks at the bar. Avoid at all costs.
This could and should be such a top boozer, but it's not.
use to be ok, but now, it needs to sort the food menu out and drink prices. The beer gardn is it's only plus point.
Another disappointing Putney pub. Goodish beer garden, but that's it. Why does Putney have so many poor pubs?
Alright inside, but the garden is the main selling point. Ignore all the idoits and this is one of the better pubs in Putney.
anonymous - 20 Sep 2005 13:23 |
was, is, always will be a crap boozer! Poor beer, not atmosphere, a right let down!
crap bar staff and overpriced.
another ruined boozer.
evers - 29 Aug 2005 14:55 |
Great pub, good food and budweiser on tap. Expensive though.
anonymous - of course it's full of 'putney types' -- it's in Putney!
Mother of god, can this pub get any worse?
I heartily agree with the comments below, this boozer SHOULD be incredible with the space, location and beer garden, but is ruined by rude, incompetent staff favouring their drinking buddies when it comes to serving.
Such a shame, but as long as it continues to attract the loud and cocky Rah Brigade, the Jolly Gardeners will remain safe.
this pub has everything and nothing. great beer garden, fairly good atmosphere and a mix of young and old at the right times. it has nothing because it's fake aussie wannabee staff ruin what could have been a great drinking hole. jolly gardners is better now it has been brought into the 21st century. let's hope for a change of management.
This pub was what the Jolly gardeners is today. Since the Quill shut and the refurb at the gardeners, more undesirables are frequenting. Still, a half decent boozer, staff are generally competent and pleasant.
Probably the best pub in Putney - relaxed, friendly - has pretty much every thing you need for a good night in the pub.
Full of putney types - avoid if at all possible
anonymous - 12 May 2005 23:58 |
Prepare yourself for a long wait at the bar whilst bar staff ignore you and look after their 'look at how much fun we're having' gang of friends and the management sat to the right of the bar. I've given this place a few visits over the last 4 years and it's let me down ever time.
anonymous - 31 Mar 2005 22:32 |
Lovely in the summer watch out for the gorgeous barmaids and the overpriced beer.
Probably the best pub on/near the High St. Garden is nice in the summer but the inside can gets unpleasantly smoky (and this is from somone who is known to enjoy the odd tab or two..). Food is great - recommend the burgers. Lager is nice but I have had one or two nasty experiences with the ales being 'off' - happily the staff are willing to accept that the customer is right in these instances! Fairly young/upmarket clientele, relatively expensive I guess - hey, it's Putney..
Mr Lash - 11 Nov 2004 11:53 |
Hmmmm. Not too sure about this place. Expensive, but decent music and range of drinks...However when I asked for a G&T I was presented with what I can only assume must be a local down-market variant - gin and soda. The manager obviously needs to train his bar staff; I mean a G&T - not rocket science is it? Nice beer garden though, assuming the local kids aren't monopolising it.
Christopher - 21 Jul 2004 12:41 |
Trendy, rather clinical pub, but always welcoming and the food is good. The beer garden is big and jolly, so it's one of the best pubs in South London when the summer rolls around. Not cheap, but a nice place to spend an afternoon of ale-sampling.
Sam - 23 Jun 2004 17:24 |
Best pub in town.Been living in Putney for a couple years, and happily visited almost every pub in town.Great atmosphere and the best beer garden in town. Can fill up with yuppies from time to time tho.
Andy P - 6 Apr 2004 15:25 |
Good food (try fish finger sandwich) and you can normally catch the football on the box without it becoming too rowdy. Good in the Winter or Summer.
Buddy - 5 Mar 2004 16:40 |
Just off the high street so it is quiet, great food when it arrives and a good selection of beer. A few years ago they extended it. Good on a winter Sunday if you can grab the sofa by the fire.
Neil - 1 Aug 2003 13:46 |
Was here on Saturday for the first time in about a year and I was impressed. The service whilst still hit and miss has improved markedly was the atmosphere is the beer garden on a sunny evening is excellent.
Gary - 16 Jun 2003 07:36 |
nice gay bar
William Stone - 27 May 2003 17:15 |
Cosy in winter and even better in Summer. Service tends to be a bit on the slow side but the atmosphere and decor well & truely make up for it.
Kate Whithear - 14 Jan 2003 00:34 |
Nowt wrong with this place at all. Good pint of Stella, friendly atmosphere. Nice.
The dates and names around the top of the walls are the Coat & Badge gold singles rowing race winners, apparently.
Techno - 15 Nov 2002 10:24 |
very over priced. full of boring work people and wanna snobs
becky - 5 Nov 2002 16:12 |
Just love the beer and service. A 5 star rating by me!
Jeff Mills - 11 Oct 2002 22:32 |
Alright for a chilled drink, but often filled with really boring people.

Nice pub - good beer garden on a quiet road just yards froom Putney High Street
Ed - 16 Jul 2002 13:16 |
This pub is a great place, with a beer garden and a real homely feel, with big fires sofas, and lovely food. Slightly off the high street, so great location. you Feel your in the countryside. Everyone is young and friendly, a must for any local

Refurbished 3 years ago. Good selections of draught beers and excellent wines. Has an outside area for those warm days !! Food is great too, large portions and of course fantastic home made burgers. Walking distance from Tube, Buses and Trains. It's an ideal place for guys to go while girlies go shopping !!
