Traditional small corner pub in the Bedford Place heart of the Southampton Student Triangle. Two rooms. Walk through the front room to the slightly larger back room. Six casks available. Advertises that it does food (pies) on Thursdays and match days, though reviews indicate it does food all week - perhaps I misread the sign, but there were no menus out. New owner took over in April, buying it for £600,000, and saying he doesn't want to change anything, and isn't going to run it himself. Was very quiet on my afternoon visit, but apparently does get busy and loud in the evenings.
Pleasant enough place. Very pleasant and welcoming barmaid. I liked it, and can see myself coming back to check out the local beers, though there was something missing that I couldn't quite put my finger on. There was a lack of warmth, character and atmosphere, though that could be because the place was so quiet. Would be worth visiting when it's a bit busier to get a real feel for the place.

Excellent Pub, has a traditional English pub feel. the beers are always in good condition and there is a good selection to choose from.
Brewdog's Punk IPA has recently been added to this list.

Inn here early last Saturday afternoon and a few others present. This place has a mostly wooden interior with flowers on the tables. Some loud piped music is playing. They have 7 hand pulls 5 for ale and 2 for cider. I had a nice pint of Red Cat Brewery Prowler Pale Ale for £3.30.

A basic town centre pub with two ciders and six varying real ales, the beer was in good condition, not up to the standard of the Wellington or the Waterloo ( both ten minutes west of here) but well worth a visit. Rather dark and on the small side and a "lived in " look.
|
Backstreet pub that is fairly handy for the football ground. Although most customers didn't seem to be there for the football. Quick service and meals were being served. The naan and curry looked good value - £1.99 I believe. Beers on were Stonehenge Pigswill, Keystone Bedrock Bitter, Saxon Archer & White Horse Bitter & Dragon Hill. A dark beer wouldn't have gone a miss. The cider was Orchard Pig Explorer and the perry was Gwynt y Ddraig Two Trees. Another recommended establishment to sample in Southampton.

BEST PUB IN THE CENTRE OF SOUTHAMPTON FOR ALE.
|
Excellent pub, small and dark inside but great chill out place offering good real ales (Dark Star and Cheritons tonight). Good relaxed chilled music and nice barmaids.
|
Still very busy on Friday/Saturday nights, but a must if you're in the Bedford place area- nice classy place to either start or end your night. Barmaids have always been the best looking in Southampton. Beers are always good to, there are only three handpumps but the range seems to change weekly. Word is that the freehold is available right now for anyone with a spare 1m.

Had the ambience of a student pub but one that happens to sell real ales - not that anyone else seemed to be drinking 'em! Three on on our visit - Solar Power from Isle of Purbeck brewery and Spire Ale from Stonehenge plus one from Wadworth, the former two were both served in perfect nick. Not far from the superb Guide Dog up the road and worth a look. Er, as an aside, didn't seem to be anything cricket related going on in this pub, which is either a good or bad thing depending on your viewpoint of the beautiful game.

First of all i dont see the grumbling about 16/17 year olds being knocked back. at the end of the day its strictly over 18's regardless of whether you with your grandparents or not!
as for the pub itself, its a fantastic place to either drop in for a few or have a good session on the guinness or house rum! excellent atmosphere with a fantastic laid back clientele. highly reccomend the chicken burgers aswell.
only will drawback is on Friday and Saturday evenings it can get very busy and take quite long to get served, but its defo worth the wait.

Loving the new decor, it looks as "hip" and fashionable as ever without being a "trendy" hang out, you don't need to be a fashion victim, or a Hollyoaks extra to drink in here. The beer is excellent and so is the food. The atmosphere at weekends is warm, friendly and welcoming, with fun loud music, good dancing tunes and professional door staff.
Have been going for nearly ten years and i will never stop.

Nice pub but looking a bit tired now. Beer usually very good. Food ok at lunchtimes. Busy at night with students.
|
Decent if small pub tucked away off Bedford Place. Wadworth 6X, Bishops Tipple and Old Sarum available, the 6X was in good condition. As mentioned it has a strict over-18's policy which is a tad unfortunate but its still amongst the best in the area.

Rather bizarrely, an identical occurrence for us yesterday...dropped in at 2pm, to find the place completely empty save for one table occupied by a group including a young child...as we approached the bar, we didn't even get a greeting of any sort, just a nod towards our almost-seventeen year old lad and a grunted "has he got any ID - over 18s only?". With that, we spun on our heels and walked out, not even bothering to question the presence of the child in the corner. Over 18 policies are no bad thing at keeping a lid on riotously packed nights in a city-centre bar, but a 16yo lad wanting a Diet Coke with his mid-forties parents AND late-sixties grandfather in tow on a graveyard Sunday afternoon is something completely different. Very poor.
|
My wife and I entered here with my seventeen year old son on Saturday lunchtime and were asked to leave without being served. There were two other customers in the whole pub. No credit crunch around these parts obviously.
|
As already stated, does get busy and is quite pricey considering the standard and selection of the beers. But is one of the better places to drink in the area with a decent atmopshere.
|
Unfortunately positioned amidst the night bars in the area and Cricketers itself was rammed at 21:00 Sat, meaning it suffered by comparison to all other pubs on the day, not only from having the weaker beer choice, but also the least comfort, with the presence of a doorman being another immediate negative, although he himself was fine. Two of the 3 pumps were clipped, Wadworth Henrys IPA and one from Hidden brewery (Treasure?). Attractive young staff & predominently young clientele, it may be better earlier in the day but would struggle to remain on map if we were to crawl Ston again.

My local, so it must be good
|
Called in here on a wonder round local pubs ended up stopping for a few, nice enviroment and surroundings not as pretentious as the bars round this area.
|
I came to Southampton to visit my disabled pal and came in here on Saturday. Its tonnes better than the other pubs on the road, and the age of people is good, most in mid to late 20's, early 30's.
Beer ain't great although there was a couple of cask options, I didn't like the look and opted for a few Desperado's and sank some brandy at the bar (warning it was not Martell but that Courvoisier shite).
My big footed pal did manage to crack onto some Irish sl*gs but didn't get his oats so was a bit of a waste of time. Nevertheless the peope in here are sound.

Good atmosphere, good ales, no chavs, one of the best pub in Southampton
|
Have visited here a few times, latest was yesterday evening. Three real ales on, each time I've been in they have been different. Last night there were a couple from Isle of Purbeck and Smiles Best.
I like this place and the barmaids are a bonus, although I haven't seen the really good one recently.
|
Friends of mine have been coming here for several years and speak highly of it. Imagine my surprise when on my first visit a very aggressive (but admittedly attractive) barmaid refused me entry. Apparently my kind aren't allowed!
It wouldn't have been so bad but the lady friend I took with me was treated very rudely and the friends - all of whom were regulars - were spoken to very aggressively when they tried to speak up for me.
I think this is (probably) a very nice pub and I'm told the beer's certainly good. The barmaid with brown hair seemed very nice and I liked the cream cheese but the fair haired one seems to have a few issues. First she said I wasn't allowed in 'cos of the licence but when my friends (yes, a bunch of lawyers!) pointed out this must be wrong she said it was a rule and it wasn't up for discussion. Good call.
Well I shan't be going back again for several years.

Home of the finest barmaids in Southampton.

As the ex landlady I am obviously biased, yes service can be a bit slow but it's a popular place and well worth a visit. There is a real ale festival at the end of this month with Oakleaf beers and many other regional ales to sample. The food is still great and be sure to visit in the winter for a Sunday Roast - still the best in Southampton!
|
Good pub, one of the best in the area. Nice lighting, comfy seats and decent music without it being too loud. A couple of decent Hampshire beers (Hole Hearted and Maypole Mild I think, from Oakleaf) on my visit, one other real ale, the name of which escapes me.
Two very attractive barmaids, service was fine midweek, haven't been for a while at weekends though.
|
I'd have to agree, there are some very attractive women sercing there.
I have popped in there a fair deal now during the week and weekend and have always been promptly and politely served.
The music at the weekend is good, with a DJ mixing away at not ridiculous sound levels so I can actually have a conversation with aforementioned babes.
In fact, I've just been invited to meet up with a friend of mine there tonight for a quick sharpener!

The barmaids are fit, but service is awful. Gets riduculously cramped at weekends, and I had to pay to get in last time I was here, I don't agree with the concept of paying to get into a pub.
|
its ok, quite like the 'yocal' affect in the heart of that area...one of those pubs that once you get a seat you could get slowly pissed in there for the rest of the night. Service is ok, not great. Need to get some of the students out at the weekend!

Nice place to go for a few after a hard day, and the best looking barmaids in Southampton to serve you some quality beers

Fantastic small, funky and friendly atmosphere, and a good choice of music, particularly on weekend nights.

A great relaxed establishment with fantastic comfy sofa's and a late license Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Great weekday food and Sunday roasts at competitive prices. Also loads of interesting Ales, Niche lagers and drinks offers daily, with live Jazz and DJ's at weekends.
