Despite having 6 ales on, with their own Clarkes beers on at £1.98 a pint; it's not a pub many real ale drinkers get excited about. It's not hard to see why, the beer selection moves slowly from the boring to the unsurprising then back again, and all of the beers seem to have Henry Boons own signature flavour: mild disappointment. The barmaids all have tough love lives in here, and if you hang around the bar too long after receiving your change you'll soon get to hear all about it so the Sky TVs and newspapers have their uses. Landlady Barbara is great comedy, stand at a ssfe distance and eavesdrop while she mercilessly humiliates staff and punters alike. Her incessant bad moods ensure both have a healthy turnover. 7/10.

Called in late afternoon between trains. Friendly welcome and tasty range of ales on offer. Enjoyed a pint of the excellent Ossett Big Red in tip-top condition. Relaxed atmosphere in this pub laid out in a spacious, floor-boarded alehouse style. Definitely worth a visit. 9/10.

I was here on Easter Sunday just before 12.00 noon but there was a lady serving.
Next to Westgate Station so worth a visit if waiting for a train like I was.
They have six hand pulls 3 for Clarks 1 for Tim Taylors Landlord & 2 guests.
I had a pint of Clarks Westgate Gold which is 4.2% & cost only 1.93 a pint.

I am long-term visitor to this pub but since a new manager took over, a small man with a nasty face, I have felt hostility from him with every visit. The last time I visited he insulted me as I walked in the door! Can you believe it! I challenged him but I refrained from punching him, although I certainly will next time. The barmaid was polite enough, although obviously embarrassed. There's a nasty atmosphere in there now, even the customers seem rougher. The place is a nasty little dive while that jumped-up Napoleon is there. Don't go there, it's a dump.

Place to go if passing, certainly better than the pubs surrounding it, friendly staff who keep a clean bar.

Three ales on the go - Clarks Mild, Blonde (it's the tap for the brewery situated directly behind) and TT Landlord. I tried both the Clarks and was impressed with the Blonde, the Mild less so (still drinkable though, tho a bit cold) both were cheap as chips, so no complaints about the pricing.

The interior is a sort of L-shape with a function room running off the right hand end (there was a wedding reception on when I went in). There's a decent attempt at creating some nice individual drinking areas, with wood paneling, stone flooring and nik-naks thrown together (the bar has an overhang which is thatched) and it just about works! There's a TV with the horses on that one old boy was avidly following, along with pool and live music nights. Perhaps my main gripe would be that on the grey, miserable day I popped in the outside awnings were pulled all the way, blocking much of what little natural light there was, making the place seem rather unwelcoming.

Overall not bad at all, I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the town but it isnt necessarily worth the journey if youre happy in the Fernandes!

Best visited during the day or early in the week as it is on "The Westgate Run" at weekends. Beer quality usually good.decor could do with update.Toilets vastly improved lately and now does food at lunchtime.
1st Monday of month has a Pagan group meeting in upstairs bar!
ecletic mix of customers ,usually friendly.

The pub could do without rogues such as ChrisP87 visiting. Nice pub though, I had the Clarks Henrys Harvest Special which was also on offer at a scandously low price. Before I knew it I had supped 2 pints of it and I had to say my goodbyes. Will grace this pub with my presence one day shortly however.

Couple of visits have yielded very pleasant afternoons. 1.74 for a point of Westgate Gold is a gem of an offer, and its such a character of a pub. Was there in my capacity of Harlequins RL fan and was very warmly welcomed by home fans and staff. Very nice.

Stone floors, pool room, various seating areas and boons yard, a back room for functions and bands. Beer quality has been inconsistent during random visits for the last 18 years ranging from very poor (the old days, clarks traditional at 1 pint) to excellent. Recent visit a pint of "Westgate Gold" was absolute nectar and on offer at 1.76 a pint.

on its day, Clark's is one of the best ales there is. theyve resisted the temptation to tinker with it too much and when its good its nectar. ive been familiar with this pub for nearly two decades, its had a bit of a roller coaster ride but i always enjoy a visit

I'm a Midlander but on trips up to Wakefield I found the Henry Boons a very welcoming establishment. Poor choice of Lager (I think its a Fosters place) but the bitter was kept quite well and the atmosphere was very friendly. Its very convenient if you use the railway station, the pool tables aren't too expensive and they always show the football or whatever sport is on. decent place

Not a bad pub for the area....

Seems quaint. But if you want to pop in for a Friday night visit it should be pleasant enough. Prop good when it has some live entertainment, though I haven't seen it yet

A bit disappointing on my visit - only two beers on handpump, only one of which was Clark's, and though drinkable it could hve been better kept. Given the competition from Fernandes', Harry's Bar etc. I wouldn't hurry back. Was fairly quiet on a Sunday early evening but seems more geared towards the younger crowd.

I reviewed this pub in Feb 05 and gave it a slating for the beer. However after contact by another user of this website I have recently visited a few times and must say that the experience has only been positive. Beautiful Clarks beer, friendly staff, in all a top pub!

henry boons is a well kept, olde worldy type pub. member of cask marque, west yorks best bar none accreditation, sells a beautiful pint of clarks blonde. staff very friendly and talkative. my favourite pub on westgate.

I've just moved to Wakefield...and have to say that Henry Boons has been a pleasant introduction to the place. It's on the way home from the train station and difficult to resist a pint of Blonde....always kept well to my experience.

This could be such a fine pub - large concert room, live music, busy location, real ale from the adjacent Boons brewery. Unfortunately let down by the way the beer is kept - Boons make some beautiful beers but they can taste disgusting in here.

Good pub with nice selection of beer, lager & fine ales. Function room for bands & party's.
