More of a younger persons hangout though not in a Big Brother, Ibiza kind of young person type of establishment. Ale was okay not bad for the area.

The Constitution has a nice position next to the canal. I arrived on Sunday lunchtime as they were opening. But seemingly one staff member hadn't turned up and the owner seemed a bit peeved. The ground floor is fairly basic. But there is a nice outdoor area overlooking the canal on the lower level. Ales were Dark Star Hophead, Sambrook's Junction & Gloucester Gold.
After finding that the Prince Albert was closed for a private function I came here for a quick pint.
This is an old style locals pub right by the canal
3 ales on the pumps....the Sambrooks Pumphouse Pale Ale was a decent pint.
Locals watching football on a dodgy satellite feed in side so I took my pint out to the large beer garden / smoking area at the rear.
Decent place but I spent the whole time in the garden so I cannot really comment on the décor etc.

I am the Licensee of The Constitution Pub in St Pancras Way, Camden. NW1 0QT. Your site states that the name of the pub has been changed to The Bell House. It has not changed. It is still The Constitution. Could you please correct.
Thanks

Smashing traditional North London boozer that doesn't try to be anything else. Plenty of regulars, slightly cliquey, as off the beaten track. Very few tourists at all, rare for Camden. Good place to play pool and they have a good jukebox which is always on the go blasting out the Jam, Madness and the Pogues. Friendly bar staff and excellent for catching the footie.
Arguably the best boozer in Camden.
Gloomsville. Garden by canal is saving feature. Modest real beer range. Advice: walk two minutes to The Colonel Fawcett.
Had a decent pint of Deuchars on a sunny afternoon. Worth stopping off for a pint if you are walking the Regents Canal.
Proper old-fashioned boozer off the main drag. Big beer garden overlooking the canal which would be lovely in hot weather (it was overcast on our visit so was quiet). Pool table, quiz machine, jukebox, basic seating, no food, pleasant staff so a decent place for catching up with mates for a few pints without being bothered by the Camden crowd with their tight jeans, funny hair cuts and unwashed tshirts. Three ale taps, Broadside was fine, didn't try the IPA and the Camden offering was, erm, off. As others have said, worth a detour as there are precious few decent pubs in the area.
In here at the end of January. Deuchars, Greene King Royal London and Broadside. Basic little pub and not too far from the main Camden area.
Nice no frills boozer.
Had a decent pint of Deuchars whilst the locals played pool and Blondie wafted through the air.
Miles better that the shitheaps on and around Camden High Street. Should you find yourself going to camden for a gig etc you could do a lot worse than take a detour here to have a few drinks first.
Visited on a Friday night. Great garden, fantastic pint of Broadside. Not so sure about the 'one big room' layout of the place, full of people shouting at each other at 8pm, the lighting was too bright for my liking, and the music was a bit loud and a bit of an odd mix, although again, that's a personal taste thing. Don't think my wife was very impressed by the stripper that appeared for what I guess was a stag do, particularly when she got her tits out in the main bar. Don't think I'd bother going back, except maybe on a nice day to sit in the garden.
...this is one of my favourite pubs in N London - good ales and feels like a proper community boozer which is getting rarer and rarer to find. Top Top Top
Great pub, greatlocation, Camden but out of the noise, fantastic beer garden overlooking the ducks on the canal, cheap grilled bbq food on weekend nights, plenty of games inside, nice little live music venue downstairs and on top of it the beer is cold and the staff is nice! What else?
Great beer garden and friendly staff.
Would recommend.
Cheers Quinno! I finally had a good pint in Camden. This is a wicked pub; quite a picturesque old building overlooking the canal path, and the garden looks like it could be cool in the summer as well. Inside was big and warm, with a cellar bar/venue containing a few old blokes playing Bert Jansch and chatting (this is a good thing). Beer-wise...NOT ALL WRONGBOW'N'LAGER!!! A good pint of Broadside and Deuchers! Guest beer was on the turn, but having the choice is what's important. Locals and staff were chatty, and the pub dogs were cute.
Really good boozer that benefits from being away from the bustle of Camden without being out of the way. Lovely beer garden where you can look down on the canal. Last time I was in the Guinness was not the best though.
Great Noogs Alive!
I really enjoyed my visit to this public house! A great little find, off the beaten track - Banana Ale was on when I visited, so we supped this all night. Weird but nice. And bananananry. Deuchars also seemed well kept.
Staff were really nice, and the locals were even friendly - bonus. There was a pool table if you like that sort of caper.
Downstairs was a magic little cellar playing live jazz on the Wednesday night I was there, theres also a reasonable sized beer garden looking over the canal, with a covered grotto type bit - good for when its raining I guess.
Didn't notice any sort of food on the night I visited so cant comment of this or if it was just a night off?
When next in Camden I shall return to this fine place, its worth the walk away from the dross that passes itself as pubs near the tube.
I love you pub.
Good Boozer A mix of Locals and Punks(there was a Club downstairs) Guinness was ok.And has been said, a great location in this Heat wave we are having
I'll echo the comments of the previous entry. A great feel to this pub , traditional but with a some modern bits. A great garden, plus bar-b-q area. Beer well kept (mauldons pucks folly). The best option in the immediatte vacinty (The Prince Albert just a little up itself, although a couple of good beers)
In a desperate bid to try and find some half-decent places in Camden to get a beer before the Manics gig, I pottered round some of the backstreets to see what I found. This was my first and best stop of the day.
After a 5 minutes walk from the tube station I spotted this one - from the outside it looks like a traditional pub and the inside delivers a modern-trad feel, with pool table, juke box and dartboard. Three ales were on offer (Broadside, Deuchars IPA and a Wyre brew), my Deuchars was in excellent form and the large foamy head was topped-up without asking.. As it was a sunny day I ventured outside and was rather pleased to discover a lovely beer garden right on the canal. The summer sun appears to travel over from the back of the garden down to set over the front of it which is fantastic in the summer months.
Basic fried food was on offer, which seemed to be going down well.
A very positive first impression, would recommend to others. Im planning a return next time Im in the area wish Id spent longer here given some of the later rotters I encountered on my crawl.
great place this. used to work in the hospital down the road so would pop in almost everyday. they know how to look after their ale and regularly have new ones on. good sized beer garden out the back, right on the canal which is absolutely ideal for a summer afternoon. just far enough from camden town for the 'camdenites' never to come here. ideal
Concur with the preceding comments from Dec 2008 which succinctly state the pub's attractions, additionally there is a basement bar area which is used for jazz on Monday nights - I've enjoyed one or two although occasionally sets have been a bit off the mainstream for my taste...
This pub has a locals feel to it without being cliquey and uninviting. There is a pool table and a dart board along with 2 TVs that show Sky Sports and Setanta. Due to the layout and the inclusion of the pool table there is not as much seating as youd have thought looking in from the outside, but this doesnt really bother me. The staff all seem friendly enough and Deuchars, Broadside and Doombar are all available along with San Miguel and a few standard lagers. There is a beer garden out the back but I did not see it as it was pouring with rain.
I liked it in here and it is a contender for the best pub in Camden.
I had a very nice couple of pints of Broadside in there the other day - got my evening off to a fine start!
This is top of my list for London pubs. Expect: great food, friendly folk, a cozy garden with good views of the canal - and a good diary of entertainment. Last Tuesday I spent a pleasant evening in the basement at the launch of The Bard the Beat & the Blues (alternative Tuesday evenings from 7th Oct). It was uncannily like being in the Troubadour Coffee House in the 60's and 70's. Everyone and his wife seemed to be a musician, poet, painter or eccentric sort who was just having an evening away from the wigwam. The performers and audience were a who's who of the acoustic, alternative music or poetry scenes - having hung around London's coffee houses in the 70s many of the faces were familiar even if the names were lost to me. But what I found really refreshing was the performances by the two young guitarists who hosted the show - Jonathan Forbes and Joe Wooley...raw talent in the making...new "keepers of the flame". At the end of the evening, feeling pretty inspired myself, I dusted off my old dulcimer and strummed away with an old goose feather till the wee hours...I wonder if I they offer floor spots!
Best beer garden ever, fab value BBQ in summer. Proper pub pub. Cute dog called Dave!
Well worth the stroll down the canal and away from the hubbub of Camden. Clean, good staff with a great local feel to it. The beer garden is great as are the various events they put on in thier basment bar, and a pool table to boot! If they offered more food wise I would make the trip more often.
Nice place, well situated and has some great DJ nights downstairs, especially The Nitty Gritty on the second Sunday of the month. They play old soul, beat, garage, girl groups and ska and it attracts some eccentric but interesting, friendly people. Good to sit outside, either right next to the canal or on the upper deck, particularly in the evening.
Nice pub, but they wanted to charge us with an entry fee after we were already in because there was a gig downstairs (which was about to finish indeed).
P.s. If you fancy a walk along the Canal towards King's Cross, beware of a group of stupid kids who enjoy throwing water and tree branches while hiding behind a wall, 100 metres from the pub. It happened twice, guess they need some education, sooner or later.

Great pub, nice old landlady, great canalside beer garden and an assortment of dogs - which is always a good thing (except when they shit round the back). Nice Summer Solstice on tap last time I went. Off the beaten track, so hopefully not likely to be given the pine and beige treatment, but not rammed all the time so probably on the 'at-risk of being turned into yuppie flats' list. This kind of worry gives me a nervous breakdown.
really great pub, good real ale and the music bar is a sound idea. this type of place should be encoraged. but and its a big but.... allowing your kitchen staff to sell illegal dvd's is not cool. this money goes to seroius criminals or worse terror groups. think im exaggerating.. ask the old bill. i love this place but that should stop !
One or two locals with a far away look in their eye notwithstanding, this is a fine pub which is making an effort to attract people, despite its backstreet location. To hell in the Lock Tavern and its bouncers and crowds - this is a much better bet and right on the canal, too.
Well, I liked it and I will go again. This customer is always right but the other ones maybe are a littel wayward at times. Rude is what short stay Oz staff in paddington do at 10:59pm, the previous correspondent my just have suffered from Culcher. Gedit? Love to everyone and beer all round. I will try the country music once or maybe more.
Blimey that seems a bit strong. I've never been called ruse before, rude and spoilt countless times. The bar staff "comforted" you? Diddums.

Stopped in by chance a few weeks ago and discovered some amazing live country music being played in the cellar bar - it's a club called Honky Tonkin Sunday, first Sunday of every month. Had an amazing night, danced to some tunes played by some very cute djs til late in the evening...oh, great beer garden and general atmosphere upstairs, too...

I'm not in to old man style pubs but this place was really nice to use, put on a free bbq esp for us the first week i lived in camden and they had lovely staff and a gorgeous garden overlooking the canal, cheap drinks etc.
Kept coming back on tues for a curry and a pint (or a malibu coke)
Friendly staff, three real ales, round the corner from the Camden Garden Centre.
Yeah Cellar bar is a treat. Now the macbar has closed, a good alternative
atlas - 16 Feb 2006 14:13 |
There's now a cellar bar open tuesday to saturday where you can avoid the locals and/or football. Very friendly and relaxed, good music, soon to be food in the evenings. The landlady's making a real effort to have it as different from upstairs as possible.
anonymous - 23 Jan 2006 15:23 |
They don't really serve food, but will happily let you order pizza if you are peckish and keep drinking. Lush beer garden with giant lavenders is heaven in summer. Best with a group of friends as a buffer to the locals.
A pub that's a pleasure to have as a local (assuming I ignore Murray's and the Camden Arms - both horrid pubs but at the opposite ends of the spectrum). It has everything for me - a choice of ales including a guest one, a pool table, a beer garden, lovely staff, great layout, a couple of tellys for when the need arises, and a fair juke box.
Every pub should be unique but the world would be a better place if they were based on this place...
Hmm, I think I need a beer and a fight after rereading that last pretentious overbearing statement.
The Constitution is something of an Oasis in Camden. We first chanced by it in mid summer and the flora and fauna of the beer garden was breath taking, both to behold and to smell. It is about as traditional English as it is possible to get. Oak boards, big flaggon tables and warm decor. Suberb Guinness, and a selection of decent ales and lagers. The staff are polite and knew my name by the 3rd time I went in. The regulars are far less scary than some of them look. They always seem to be telling some tale and seem happy to regail it to freinds and strangers alike. All in all, a real top pub and a good find.
The best pub in NW1. Have had some great nights in here.
All the below is true. V good ales, friendly staff and possibly the best beer garden in camden.
My only concern is that the locals can be a little local and unwelcoming. Perhaps with summer coming the locals can smell the incomers to this hidden Camden treasure.
Interested to see 'davecamden's' reply to my comment on the pub - he apologised for a particular night without knowing what date I was referring to. Somehow, I doubt we had the same night in mind... I've visited a lot of pubs in London and this is the only one I am sure I will never go back to.
Stumbled upon this pub by accident after go for a looong walk along the canal and trying to find a pub that wasn't jam packed full. Absolutely lovely pub garden. Right by the canal, and so very unpretentious. Loved it. Very nice lady spoke to me at the bar when I was ordering my pints and everyone seemed very friendly. Bar lady (Landlady?) lent us her pen so we could do the crosswords and then felt very sorry for us when we couldn't go the final clue (it ended up being 'Waterloo'). If I'm ever in this area, I will definitely spend a sunny afternoon there again.
It's not my pub, it's Wendy's (my mum). I'd like to apologise about his experience. It was basically my fauly, Wendy was meant to have the night off and I never turned up for work, so she was understandably miffed and surly.
Not going to do any plugs for the pub and I won't rate it, that'd be cheating.
Sorry again.

My experience wasn't so good; slow service, bar unmanned for quite a while, defensive and personalised staff attitude.
Really nice pub out of the way in Camden. Basic interior - nothing special, but friendly staff and punters. Great Adnams Broadside served from proper casks. One of my favourite beer gardens. Spent most of my summer days in my last year of uni whiling away the hours there. Right on the canal, so quiet and relaxing. The summer sun travels over from the back of the garden down to set over the front of it. Also within easy reach of central Camden, if you want to go on for a night out, or alternatively the Lord Stanley north through the mews if you want another pint of Broadside.
yeah i worked down the road from there and went there every other lunchtime, really good people locals who you could have a good chat with about anything and good landlady (wendy) plus all the people i met ash, tom, dave, pat, jim, mark etc too many too mention! but you are guaranteed a good laugh and chat there either lunchtimes or 5.30 onwards, i'l be back one day

fewr and fewer traditional pubs in this area bas they go the trendy route . then very many of the few normal pubs that are left in this area are aimed squarely at the irish ex-patriot community, and kitted out to for there exclusive patronage . but this is both a proper pub, and a pub where you can have no irish blood whatsoever and not feel like an interloper .
dan - 19 Aug 2004 12:20 |
Really nice pub (and beer garden), excellent ales - Adnam's + Broadside & Directors- but a poor selection of lagers. The food is cheap and the staff are friendly, and a nice location by the canal. The clientele were also quite nice when we were there, if you see what I mean.

Lovely beer garden and friendly landlady.
Stacey - 19 Jun 2004 08:40 |
A chilled out, traditional pub, with pool table, juke box and fruit machines. Reasonable prices, good for a quiet drink or as part of a pub crawl!
