Very enjoyable visit to friendly pub with mixture of football fans and locals. Quite a bit of Iron Maiden memorabilia too ... Recommended.

Great Pub, under new Management and has changed dramatically!!! it is so welcoming very friendly staff and has a whole section dedicated to Iron maiden. I went there on a Sunday and had a delicious pork roast must say one of the best I have ever tasted!!

Oooh - forgot to mention we didn't actually believe all the "Iron Maiden's first gig stuff anyway, having been fans for many years, but what sealed it was the picture of "Nikko McBain" - I kid you not!!! We couldn't stop laughing :)

I went to this pub with a friend on Saturday 21st March because we'd been told about all the Iron Maiden memorabilia and the link with their early days. Having looked at previous reviews it seemed like a good rock pub so we decided to give it a go. The website had mentioned a live band that might, so we were looking forward to some rock.
It had a good selection of beers and cider, so no problems there. We got there shortly after 7 and there was sport on and MTV blaring out plastic pop. It remained very empty though, with just us and about 20 locals (who left by 10pm) and one slightly bemused foreign couple who had clearly arrived on the same premise as us. After an hour we started to wonder whether the band would be playing or not, but decided to have another pint and wait. Finally about 9.45 the band came in and began setting up, starting to play at about 10.30. Sadly we had to leave about 11.15 to get our trains home.
It seemed a shame that the place was so empty on a Saturday night, and that instead of having the band start about 9 which would be a good way to get people in, they started late. We were told that this was due to having a licence until 2.00am, so bands "obviously" play late - OK for locals (none of whom turned up!) but not for anyone else. It's a shame to see what is actually a decent pub and a great music venue (once the band actually started!) being let down by a lack of foresight and punters, regular or otherwise.

The birthplace of iron maiden, and plenty of great memorabilia to inspect while supping a pint of trooper. Warm welcome and good ale, only shame is no food so had to move on to the king Edward in town centre as were hungry. A proper old boozer with an interesting twist, recommended!!

this pub is a good all rounder. It does have quite a few eastern europeans..but it is stratford at the end of the day not emmerdale! so wake up darling!! Actually a very clever landlord to cash in!!
live music good at the weekends especially the new rock bands on saturdays.
And they only started serving kronenburg so don't know what pub that donut went to two years ago! Good crowd of people and a wicked choice of shots, you name it they have it! ..I'm going back!!

Popular with the Bulgarians. Claims to be the home of Iron Maiden, although this appears to be disputed. Despite there being other pumps, as it was two years ago it still is now, if you want a pint, it's Kronenbourg. Barmaid looks about ready to slit her wrists although the landlord seems all right. It's fairly empty during the week. If sorted his beer out maybe more people would go.

Wiolka don't leave a comment unless you can actually write English properly. Hopefully you've gone back to where you came from with the rest of your lot. Yep Eastern European Headquarters here, makes this place even worse.............but there is the odd time I'm hammered and decide it'd be a great idea to have a late one here. Best bit to this pub is the smoking area out the back which appears to be kept in a better condition than the pub. As far as fighting goes I haven't seen it kick off, and they do have some doormen at the weekend.

Odd place, with the pool table taking centre stage (giving the incongruous effect of an alter). No real ale, and not many of the lager dispensers seemed to be working either. Surprisingly polite barman.
|
Great place for a punch up, just turn up here steaming at 1am on a Saturday and start fighting with the Slavs or the Pikeys over some 50+ yr old vodka-soaked dog with varicose veins wearing a mini skirt. Great fun, but make sure you pick a night where the hospitals aren't too busy so you don't have to wait too long until you get all the glass shards removed from your face and neck.

Shakespeare met some American tourists here.

It's like being back in the Wild West! I swear I saw sawdust on the floor and a bottle swinging barmaid! The atmosphere is tense and I don't think the regulars appreciate new faces. Apart from all the travellers obviously. Definitely only a place to go for one last late drink. Just make sure you got good mates behind you incase things get dodge.

I agree with last review. This use to be a great place but boy has it gone to the gutter. What ever Brewery/Person owns this place should be ashamed of themselves, have you seen the state of their toilets ? and the smell !!!!!!
Rotten beer... rotten attitude from staff and rotten place !!!!!!!!!

Popped into this pub for the first time in ages and found it hard to believe that it had gone downhill. Felt grimy, and could feel the cancer growing in my lungs every minute I was in there, it was so thick with a fog of cigarette smoke. I think we interuppted the barmaid's evening by ordering a drink (she preferred shining her laser pen at the only other barmaid to serving customers). As an Eastender, felt strangely out of place in this local East End boozer as it was frequented entirely by Eastern Europeans (other than the old couple that came in for half a lager, bless them!). Live music was ok, but too loud to hear any conversation. The only saving grace was the amusement factor at watching everyone dance to seemingly different songs. I'm sure I won't go back unless I'm desperate for a late drink on a Saturday.

Absolute Gem ! One of the pubs that you wont visit until your too drunk to know any better.. (that is why it's only busy at the weekends after every other bar in the area is shut) Seen lots of pub brawls in my time but this years St Patricks night kick off was truly one where you wished you had a crash helmet and a video camera. God love 'em, they do know how to jolly up in here and you'll always see a punch up at the weekend but its rare you get treated to so much smashing of Bud & Becks bottles and random exhuburant glassings as this once a year frivolity. There were at least 10 people bleeding out the front being tended to by Paramedics whilst the Police closed the road down. On the down side, they always book shite mediocre, 'never has been' acts (with 80's style backing floppy discs) or "New Bands" from 'Oireland that are usually garage bands related to someone the guvnor knows cos "he's got a big music pub in London" and they're "Touring London". They don't have Cask Beer, the other draught is warm and the glasses are filthy. The Guinness is the only safe option cos' they're scared of upsetting the Travellers.

Someone have a word with the landlord of this please. Zero people skills. He was happy to watch me and my friends drinking in his pub(buying big rounds), when I asked for a glass of water between my alcohol drinks he refused. He said I had to buy a bottle of water, I asked for tap water, he said the tap water was bad!!!
If you want to get a re-action from him, ask him about his throne to the right of bar counter, but stand back!!!!
late bar, thats all that can be said for this place
