Well I havnt been to this pub for 10 years now so we went last week and it is still as good as ever brilliant food and good beer and Peter the landlord is really friendly and a pleasure to talk too, I really do recommend this pub, it is right on the moors above post bridge so you need to drive or walk to it. Exellent

A Dartmoor classic and one to sit out on the tables over the road to enjoy a pint with a view if you can. Beer selection let down slightly these days by the appearance of the ubiquitous Doom Bar on the pumps. They used to have Summerskills beers from what I remember of past visits. There was also an Adnams as a guest, which I thought odd as they only used to source beers from the SW. Having said this, the Otter Ale was on tip-top form - and served in a jar without having to ask, which is always nice. One person worthy of note is the waitress who deserves a medal for negotiating the road to take people's food orders to them - which on a nice day is almost every order I'd imagine.

This is an extremely isolated pub that is really for people who walk or drive. Apparently it’s the 3rd highest pub in the UK.
We stopped here on the way from Princeton to Mortonhampstead as a special' tick just for me. The pub is famous for the fire that never goes out.
3 ales on the hand pumps, my choice of Black Tor Brewery's Pride of Dartmoor was very good.
4 rooms inside laid out as follows, 1 for food, 1 bar area, 1 snug and a really large room that's also laid out for food and looks like a function room.
Lots of wooden panelling, small wall lights and a medieval style chandelier hanging in the large back bar along with a collection of plates.
Amazing views to the front across the moors, during our visit the rain stopped the sun came out and a rainbow appeared across the moor.

Absolutely brilliant! Not really a fan of the Otter, but the scrumpy cider was excellent. The pub stands completely alone on the side of the road (Moretonhampstead to Postbridge) and has a spectacular view across the moors. Beer garden in the moors, or on cold/rainy/windy days you can warm yourself by the open fire. A perfect place for a rest. Idyllic, with lots of character, and very sociable, friendly and chatty landlord & staff. Absolutely perfect.

Absolutely LOVE this pub. Try and get here every few weekscouple of months. Great landlord, welcoming and friendly staff, warm atmosphere and views to die for. Nothing false or pretentious like you see in so many pubs these days, but how a pub should be - great beercider, dogs welcomed and lovely food!

You will find it hard to find anywhere on dartmoor with such sweeping landscape views from the beer garden,oh and a decent pint of Black Sheep "Riggwelter" was quaffed. 8/10

Great location and the views outside are outstanding (wrap up warm!) Saw one old codger drinking his pint in his car! It is a bit of a tourist hellhole though and getting a table inside was impossible
8/10

Beer was well kept and a choice. But London prices in Devon. About the only downer at an otherwise great little pub.

A truly magnificent pub in the middle of nowhere. Wood panelling, two fires, one of which has apparently been burning sice 1845. Doom Bar, Otter Ale and Ringwood Old Thumper on when I visited; Otter in perfect condition. Didn't try the food but it seemed decent and good value. Cosiness is something I value in a pub and this is well, well cosy. A perfect 10.

An interesting pub, high up on Dartmoor with extensive views. Otter Ale, Adnams Broadside and Tribute on tap on my visit. The Otter was really tasty, as was the steak in ale pie! Well worth a visit.

Comfortable, welcoming pub, excellent location and good range of drinks.

Sorry to be an anorak but it's a 'B' road in the middle of Dartmoor: B3212
|
A superb rest-break on the A3212 on one's Dartmoor excursions. The Ploughman's lunch is wholly recommended - the Cornish Yarl is exceptional, when coupled with the ham. The beer is well kept and was served at the correct temperature upon our visit this weekend. The pub was busy, as one would expect on an albeit squally July afternoon, but the service was efficient. We were on a busy schedule, so our visit was brief. The visitor with children would be wise to note that the landlady / bartender is tough on enforcing their licensing obligations in that no under 14s are allowed in the main bar area. There are side rooms a-plenty but it would be worthy to either get there late or early for lunch... Overall, excellent.

Lovely pub. We both had a ploughman's which was delicious and most of the other people eating their lunch also had a plougman's! I liked the way that they asked your name when you ordered food and shouted it out when delivering your lunch! Wonderful spot to have lunch and look out over Dartmoor.

Ideally situated as a stopping-off point after a day's avoiding sheep dung. A true traveller's rest. An extra point for pushing the boat out a bit by specialising in some very rare malt whiskeys too. And yes, WATCH THE ROAD!
|
Lovely pub in a great setting- either sitting outside admiring the view in summer or huddling by the fire in the winter. Only downside is the food- avoid the burger, same standard as school dinners.
|
Remarkable pub, literally in the middle of nowhere. If the weather's good get a pint of cider and sit at one of the benches on the other side of the road - the views are quite simply stunning. Be careful crossing that road though!
|
An absolute gem. I get down to Dartmoor at least once a year, and always spend an evening here. Good choice of beer, really good reasonably priced food, friendly staff, great atmosphere and perfect remote location looking out on the moors.
If I had to spend the rest of my life in just one pub - this would be it!

Agree, fine little pub. Great when it snows as u can sledge down the bank, then go back up for a pint! The fire has reputed to have bruned for 150 years yes, but no ones seems to mention the rumour about it going out a few years ago (an incident invloving a visiting rugby team?).
ps i asked my chimney sweep this same question. The answer is soot only collects when the chimney cools down.

This is fantastic place. Literally sitting alone on the side of a road in the middle of Dartmoor. It has great ales, mulled wine, proper amazing food and 2 huge real fires at either end. One fire has been constantly burning for 150 years, how do they clean the chimney?
