A nice cosy place directly below the royal Albert railway bridge. Lovely interior inside although the place does lack a decent garden. Didn't eat here but i would do in the future.
8/10

Nipped in here for a beer as well during the RAB 150 do, cant remember much about it, thinks were getting hazy by then, but I do remember the beer being ok and lots of food being produced. Maybe I need a revisit.

Ate at the boatman a couple of weekends ago, the food was out of this world I had the roast duck with the orange sauce which was so tasty i didnt want it to end my partner had a fish dish which was just as amazing as mine they came with two kinds of potatos and three different veg was probably the best meal i have had in a long time. Not only was the food great but the staff and the atmosphere was just fantastic. The young waitress was so lovely and made us feel so welcome laughing with us and making us feel part of. She was well dressed well spoken and acted very professional. If the staff at the boatman read this thank you very much and we will definatly see you again.

Sorry nhsmonkey had a bad experience.
Ate their recently with my wife and daughter. Fresh fish is the speciality here. My sea bass in lemon grass sauce was great. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed her`5 fish` - sole, plaice, monkfish, haddock, sardine. The Mrs had the grilled sirloin, which was tender and top quality. Good vegetable selection, although Andy the landlord and chef does seem overly fond of his red cabbage. The place seems fully booked most weekends, and busy during the week as well, so they must be doing something right.
Formerly the Passage House Inn, The Boatman is 16th century, in a terrific riverbank setting beneath the Royal Albert Bridge and the Tamar road bridge.
Andy and Yvonne have built a good core of regular drinkers since they took over in April 2005 - and this is down to a good beer selection and the friendly welcoming atmosphere, where no one is excluded.
A `village pub` type feel in an urban waterfront setting and well worth a couple of hours of anyone`s time.

Have had many a pleasant meal here and often suggest it to friends especially if they like fish. Also the steak is great.

Friends and I decided to eat in the boatman some weeks ago after hearing rave reviews from patients and associates and we were most certainly not disappointed. The service was outstanding and the atmosphere was very warm and inviting. Our meals were served promptly and in a very professional manner.
The meal itself was glorious. The starters were all good sizes, and the hot spiced crab really was to die for!! The main courses certainly didn't disappoint either. The fish dishes were superb, all cooked to perfection and served with a sauce which really complemented the fish. My husband ordered the sirloin steak strintburg and i can honestly say that i have never tasted such good beef. The meat was literally melt in the mouth.
The only criticism i can possibly make is that the dessert menu was slightly limited (but with main meals as good as this i wonder how many people have room for a sweet.)
I really cant recommend this restaurant highly enough, and all i have to say about the previous post, is that the author clearly has a problem with his pallet!

Recently went in there for a Sunday lunch. Very friendly, both staff and regulars. Food was excellent, a very pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Absolutely shocking - the worst meal out I have had in the last 10 years. We ordered a mixed grill and the Cornish Trio (a mixture of skate, monkfish and haddock). I asked for no tomatoes on the mixed grill and a side order of garlic bread with cheese. 40 minutes later four dishes arrived, mixed grill (plenty of tomatoes but no fries as advertised), the garlic bread (single slice of thick toast with a smattering of "medium mature" and lurpak with a couple of garlic cloves pressed into it - 2.65 anyone ?), the Cornish Trio and two dishes of mixed veg including oily deep fried potatoes, red cabbage, carrots, boiled new potatoes and boiled parsnips. The mixed grill was reasonably well cooked but the sausage was cheap and deep fried and the whole thing was swamped in shredded lettuce and tomatoes - it was cooked reasonably well however. My girlfriends fish was swamped in lemon juice to the point of being almost inedible. A total waste of 26.

This isn't so much a bar as a restaurant but that just means that the bar area is usually quite quiet. Good for a meal or cosy pint.

this place is really nice either for a quiet drink or a nice meal meal out with friends/family or even a party. The landlord and land lady are extremely friendly and allways curtious and polite and if time permits will attempt to have a conversation with you. Overall i really like this place but still prefer the Railway for the Sunday Karaoke

After 2 or 3 ill-fated takeovers in the last 18 months, there is finally someone who CARES running the place. It's been tidied up, and the new couple are making a real effort here. The new menu (the couple who heve it used to run a fish restaurant in Looe) is great - a cut above standard pub fare, but still good value and on the basis of our meal, highly recommended (17 for 2 main courses). Forget the way its been recently, pay The Boatman a visit - you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Oh, by the way, the 'beer garden' reminded me of a urinal.

Cant really comment on this pub fully as it is under very new management who appear to be making some nice additions to what essentially is (see previous posts) a nice little restaurant that is a pub second. Well worth a family visit for a treat. Nice job, will pop back soon to see progress

Recently reopened. I agree with the previous poster who said it is more of a restaurant.
Last time I was in there the chef was behind the bar, I had to show him how to pour Guiness.

Brian and Lisa run a really good pub, with food that is to die for. They are both always very welcoming, and are good fun to be around. I would say it is more a resurant than a pub, but the wine selection is pretty good and the beers kept well. Its worth a try, like I say if you don't fancy a normal pub meal.
