Was on a long walk and looking forward to a pint but alas it was very much closed and it was only 3pm. Either it shut really early due to no business at lunchtime or it doesn't open midweek lunchtimes....

Saddened to learn on Saturday that after six years of serving some of the best Brakspears in South Oxfordshire, tenant Neil Dorsett is moving on to pastures new.

Visited on a hot Sunday afternoon. Friendly enough place in a pretty village. We were a little surprised it wasn't busier. Beer OK (like most pubs in the area it sells the Marston's range including Brakspear's Bitter). We had one starter only, so I can't really comment on the food beyond saying what we had was good but somewhat expensive. The locals can certainly afford it, but if you're walking the Ridgeway on a budget you might want to go somewhere else for lunch. But definitely a pleasant beer stop.

Had a good pint of Marstons Boondoggle & a half of Braks Bitter. Friendly landlord and a nice pub to be in. Had the fish & chips which was lovely but it should be at 12.95 or so. Food took an hour even though very few people there, but still a good pub.

I have been going the Perch for the past 10 years well ever since my sister moved to South Stoke and despite the ever changing landlords, would give it 8/10.
Excellent beer and friendly staff but haven,t eaten there for a while so can't comment

Nice old pub, full of character. Well kept ales. Relaxed atmosphere. Worth a visit.

Its a shame about the previous review as my wife & I have just stayed there for 1 night and had a completely opposite experience. Food and service in the restaurant and the pub were both great, Thanks to the staff for making our stay enjoyable.

Oh dear, where to start.
My girlfriend and I decided to return to this pub last week, around 18 months after having a lovely meal there very early in our relationship So we were looking forward to our visit and it had very special memories.
What we had to put up with was nothing short of a total disgrace. Our first greeting at 2.20 pm was from a rather curt-sounding woman sat in the bar chatting loudly to two men (we later discovered she was the landlady) telling us that they shut at 3 pm, that several things weren't on the menu and that we "should have got there earlier". Somewhat taken aback, we continued to order.
On taking our drinks through into the next room, we were swiftly pursued by the landlady (temporarily breaking off from holding court in the other bar) who yelled at us that the restaurant was closed in the daytime and could we stay in the bar. We were somewhat surprised by this, as the table we had put our drinks on was the same one we had sat at for lunch 18 months before. Not as surprised possibly as the other diners, who had all stopped their meals and conversations to watch our humiliation.
At this, we decided not to stay and settled up for the drinks which included a very nice pint of Brakspear which sadly I had felt compelled to down far too quickly in our haste to beat a retreat. My girlfriend complained to the very pleasant chap behind the bar who seemed somewhat embarrassed and apologetic for (what turned out to be) his wife's attitude.
If he wants any passing trade, the landlord needs to sort out his wife and pretty damn quick. Preferably by not letting her in the pub, as she clearly has no people skills whatsoever, or at the very least by making sure she stays off the sauce on a lunchtime (if that is what the problem was).
Suffice to say we will never be returning and have sadly had our lovely memories of the place destroyed.

A really traditional village pub in a traditional village. Brakspear beers - which were just fine. Usefully on the Ridgeway walk. Dog friendly - a dog mat and bowl next to the bar mean that quadrupeds are served before us humans.

I have always had a problem being seved here. I think its a colour thing. A lovely pub in all aspects but not if your not white!

A true English pub, I was a regular with the first wave of Murphy pipeline guys in the late eighties. I usually call in during the day, if I am in the area, I can just imagine the ghost of old Fred Turner with his large Bells whiskey, approving the tasteful embellishments to the pub, Great to see the Perch & Pike (besides St. Andrews of course) remaining the focal point of this quintessentially English village long may it continue.

This is is a very good pub again thanks to the new Landlord, very good food, sunday lunches one to try all cooked on the premises, all food and a good range of beers makes the Perch & Pike a pleasand place to enjoy a few hours of great hospitality, hope it is they stay for a long time.

This pub is much improved, with new landlord from January 2007. Beer, pub and customers properly looked after. Worth a visit. Hooray!

"...looking forward to a really nice pub being looked after..."
All I can say is that the poster making that comment must have been seriously disappointed over the last 18 months.
The disarray and mis-management of this pub during that time can only be described as criminal. Don't eat here (if you value your money and indeed your health), don't drink here (unless you want to spend your evenings in an empty pub where as often as not they have run out of beer, and any drinkers who do call in are obviously despised by the pig-ignorant management), in fact don't bother going here at all.
Time for another change!!

I understand that the pub is about to change hands, so looking forward to a really nice local pub being looked after. Not sure if anyone has seen the rooms - very swish!!

Perch & Pike, been there, real village pub

The Perch is my local, so I'm probably biased, but I think it's a great village pub! The beer is nearly always very good, and the house wine is of a high standard. The bar staff are always on the case, and the atmosphere in the bar is good. Only problem is that the pub keeps changing hands, so no-one ever gets to really imprint their own character on it.

Ooh no. The food was very nice indeed. And it wasn't overpriced at all. The staff was fine as well. Nice aussies behind the bar by the sound of things, and local girls waitressing. Not uninterested at all.

Really lovely pub. Good selection of Brakspear's beers, and decent food. Large, good looking restaurant on the side. Radio on, which had very bad reception! Good villagey atmosphere. Recommended.
