Today I went to The Inn On The Green and I went into the restaurant, which is known as The Grumpy Old Mole. Well, it was worse meal I have ever had and I will never go there again. It was expensive on the drinks and I thought the rubbing house was expensive, but compare with The Inn on the Green the rubbing house is the cheapest place around and the food is far better.

My husband and I recently went for an evening meal here. My piri piri chicken was excellent, but unfortunately my husband's rib eye steak was very fatty. We had to ask for a steak knife and wasn't offered "the selection of sauces". What really surprised us though was the lack of personal service - no eye contact from the waitress, not asked if everything was ok for us, not asked if we enjoyed out meal, plates dumped in front of us and whisked away quickly when we had finished. It was as if these people just assume they are doing well and don't need any confirmation. shocking. The food is certainly not cheap but (apart from the steak), very good. Wine excellent and for once my husband's beer from the tap was fizzing beautifully and he had no complaints about that. The staff/management need to re-think their approach with customers.

Agree with all comments about this being more a restaurant than a pub but for those wanting to eat and have a couple of drinks either in the bar or the restaurant you wont be disappointed. Great variety on the menus and all of our group had different meals and all were very pleased. Friendly welcome, good service and lovely real fire burning on a cold day gave it a lovely feel. Wine list is relatively expensive but well thought out. With a choice of drinking pubs very close, has its place in the local market.

Have eaten here many times, but make no mistake, although it classes itself as a pub it is in no way a pub at all. The "bar area" is in fact full of tables full of diners. Sunday lunch very good but very busy so booking needed well in advance. Our last visit was a bit of a disaster as was an unexpectedly beautiful day and the tables outside were busy. Ordered a lukewarm glass of wine only to be told that the kitchen closed as been too busy and couldn't cope, counted 18 other people being turned away too. So the moral of the story is book, book, book and expect a restaurant and not a pub.

More a restaurant than a pub. I'd suggest visiting in summertime when you can use the outside tables, as there's very little space at the bar. Harvey's Sussex Best and London Pride on offer - bit expensive though.
|
meals are not cheap.staff not very friendly and tables r uncoftable
|
Just one uncomfortable table with a couple of "toadstools" to sit on right in front to the bar for drinks only punters today - meant really, I guess for those waiting for a dining table.
It should give up the pretense of being a pub.

My wife and I recently visited the GM with 2 friends who, like us , were very impressed with all aspects of the pub. The food was great, service without fault and it was very good value. We will be back!
|
The tables in the restaurant are a little close togerther, but that's a small complaint (especially as they under-charged us! ssh, keep it under your hat)
The reliance on food means the 'pub' area is a little small. If you just want a drink, I would recommend a summer visit as the spaces outside look very pleasant.
In all, not bad. There are certainly several less satisfactory places nearby.

the is grate you have to book 3weeks in avance for a meal at the weeked

A huge improvement from the place before, polite staff and nice respectable people in there now.
|
Put it this way, they couldn't have made it any worse. The potato heads have been driven out. That's not actually all that difficult to do. Make a place look and feel reasonably respectable and the lowlife end of the white van brigade soon relocates to less reputable premises.
And indeed it is all OK, clean and tidy and everyone's nice to you. It feels comfortable but what it doesn't do is feel like a pub. Maybe something to do with rather rather strange decorative getup, which perpetuates the mainly black colour scheme of the previous regime.
The Harvey's Best was in decent form today. Worth a stop if your passing on a nice day and want to sit outside for an hour, but there are far better - and one or two outstanding - alternatives in this neck of the woods if you want a real pub.

My wife and I recently dined at The Grumpy Mole Restuarant for our wedding anniversary and cannot fault it for service, value, quality of the food, ambience and menu on offer. It made a refreshing change to be served by people cheerful in their work with a genuine interest in your enjoyment and the work they are doing. It is a completely different experience to the pub it was before the changes and one which I have no hesitation in reccomending and revisiting.

ponsy 'pub' really after restruant trade, owners hate builders , if you want real well looked after ale and a nice atmosphere AVOID this place like the plague

Has two outside patio's?? Presumably to attract the greengrocer's and their apostrophe's.

What a shocker! Me and a few other lads work locally and have been doing the rounds visiting all the nearby pubs. And so far so good, until today. We have quite a few good ones such as the Kingswood, the Dukes, Chequers and the Blue Anchor all of which have pretty good food and good atmosphere.
But there is only one word to describe this place - bad. The burgers were terrible a horrible pattie in a tiny Tesco's bread roll, you could tell the were chips cooked in disgusting old oil and had that burnt brown look about them.
The beer was OK but the inside of the place is dirty, with ripped old chairs and very much full of locals. We won't be going back.

Cor blimey, guv - it's war! Interesting to note the comments since my first post a few months ago - maybe the name should change to The Marmite!
When I were young, way back in the 70's, it changed [from The Bricklayer's ?], and became a pub full of posers, in daddy's new car [just like The Fox, on Coulsdon Common]. We started frequenting The Prince Albert, Bletchingley, which was still a real pub - public and saloon bars; sadly, the landlord, Reg, moved to Redhill, and that changed.
The Beacon is a throwback to the older style. It is still a bit tatty [due to the new owner -from The Duke's Head- having devious plans, and not spending money on it], but Dawn and Paul, who I've got to know quite well, are making a good effort. They don't just want your money! As with all pubs, it will benefit from the 'No Smoking' law. Some of the natives are a bit iffy, but that's 'cos they're Chelsea or West Ham, instead of Palace!
Shame people post anonymously - stand up and be counted! [And be proud of your team, even if they fail in the play-offs!]

Super. The new managing couple are called Dawn and Paul; they are great. They make a pub into how it should be. Paul is a true gentleman of early 40's and the young lady Dawn is inspirational and beautiful, late 20's going on 45. They treat everyone as a person with no passing judgement. A breath of fresh air away from the patronising efforts of others. All the best!

I don't know where some people get their misery medicine from-only ever posting bad and judgemental reviews about pubs...This pub is now very clean, cosy and friendly. The re-furb: framework is black gloss[sounds horrible BUT] the walls are cream and it's fresh, million times better than before. A great range of older customers appear to be regular- all sharing this great pub at one time. Of course (as in any PUB pub) you will get the small group of salt of the earth workers and plumbers etc-but they only bring light hearted humour and trade into what i've heard is called a 'graveyard shift'. It's when I drink in there and there are people my age too. Some are extremely educated men. It proves a cosy welcoming atmosphere in my eyes. It's just the the Guv and Guv'ess working in the place and they run it really well. No complaints here! Give it a chance.

Scruffy, smokey and dingy, everything painted black. In desperate need of a refurb, which would give something for the vast number of white van drivers who patronise the place something useful to do. I hate to say it but the Vintage Inn up the road is a better choice.

Great Pub
|
the best thing about this pub is the re development of the total area to up market town houses. shocking.
|
Lovley boozer better than the KWA down the road which is a rip off.
The Guv and Guv'ess are both lovley people who always make you feel welcome.
Cheap beer basic food and a cracking barlady to smile at.

Under new Management, it needed some new blood!!! Pub looks great with a happy friendly atmosphere. Just don't go when Chelsea are playing, as it gets a bit loud!!!
|
Now under new management - same owner as the Dukes Head up the road. Friendly couple behind the bar - one's a nice young blonde, if you like that sort of thing! Not the dump it used to be.
|
Used to be packed out with bored nurses looking for fun 20 years ago.
Where do they go now I wonder?
anonymous - 19 Jun 2005 00:22 |
What a dump! Don't bother wasting time or money here. Rude service and full of dodgy builders/roofers.

what could be a lovely little pub is spoilt by the clientle which come from the nearby estate. when you walk through the door expect evry head to turn and look at you as if you are an alien....
