user reviews of O'Neills, Leytonstone

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

From reading most of the reviews, I was expecting on my night out with my friends (male and female) to be a total disaster which would end up in a fight BUT how wrong those reviews are. I can only think that O'Neills in the past must have had some right troublemakers but on my night out, I saw nothing but everyone having a great time. Yes, there was the occasional drink spilt on the dance floor but Ive seen worse in nigthclubs.
.
The music and atmosphere is way better then most other pubs Ive been too and if I wanted to have a conversation, then I could always walk into the main bar away from the club area.

The management and doorman were all polite and the bar was well attended that we didnt have to wait long to get an order in.

O'Neills is a great night out and if you don't believe me, I checked their Facebbok page and saw some great photos of the night I was there.

Possibly ok for a beer in the day time to watch live sport. Avoid it like the plague on Friday or Saturday night.
kristianJ - 21 Apr 2012 16:21
the place itself is ok, but the music in there ..boom-boom-boom - horrible
alien33 - 14 Nov 2011 11:32
Two recent daytime visits for the 6 nations rugby, so friendly amosphere. Guinness (ordinairy) great value at 2.07p / pint, a bit cold, not much of a bitter seclection on the day (just very cold IPA). Pretty rapid and fairly friendly service. Lots of screens offering a decent view, and mate who is local says they opened up another big room with very large screen, but we didn't go in there. Stinky bog, though clean looking, and all the soaps/drier in order. Food looked OK. Overall, OK, but not sure I'd want to go there just for the beer.
spit_the_dog - 1 Mar 2010 10:40
A vast improvement in the bar part recently. Good Karaoke on Thursdays and very reasonable food from only 2.99, they now show all major sports including ppv boxing
raoulduke - 9 Dec 2009 20:20
You need to get Punchmonkey in your pub again !!! We travelled from Oxford to see them and they blew your crowd away !!!

My cousin lives not far so we can stay with her and party !

No Lives Bands is just insane !!!
Musiclover81 - 24 Sep 2009 16:20
this pub is great .... definatly should stop in for a drink and a boogie.
dj has a really skill when it comes to picking music and the bouncers are proper decnt blokes. there only doing there job!!

stroh - 13 Sep 2009 20:27
Well what can I say about Oneills Leytonstone,

I have been going to the place for the last 9yrs, and I have never had any issues,
I have always found the doorman to be decent guys who are only doing there job, protecting people from idiots that like to cause fights and other issues.
The staff behind the bar are always there to serve you as quick as they can, why cant some people out there realise that its busy sometimes and that they will get to you in the end just hold on.

The music is always good, and covers all aspects that people will like, from indie to rock to funky house and a bit of garage.
If you get the chance venture there on a Thursday and Sunday as Keri the karaoke nights are always a good laugh, with the same faces every week.

All in all with a group of mates oneills is a good place to go on the weekends, open till 3 its local and easy to get home from.
What more can when you go out....

Dvito - 7 Apr 2009 12:12
Absolutely cracking pub, good beer, good atmosphere, good sports, lovely staff, lovely security, Just a shame some of the eejits that complain, or go there maybe be the cause of teh trouble.

Personally never had no hassle, see the odd fight, but thats dutch courage with people who are incapable of enjoying themselves, with ruining others nights.
OneShotPaddy - 1 Apr 2009 13:03
I wonder which of the North Star regulars is Rogerthedoger. Could he be a she?
anonymous - 27 Mar 2009 09:32
Fight club. avoid this shithole.
DavidWaspnest - 27 Feb 2009 17:07
A refreshing change from the other locals. Quick service and beer not too bad.
rogerthedodger - 27 Feb 2009 12:53
Without a doubt this is one of the best decorated pubs in the whole of east london this christmas. Well done to all involved. It also has a good smoking area. The pub can be crowded so I still prefer to pop into the North Star which is just round the corner in leytonstone village at busier times. Merry Christmas to everyone.

My friends and I call this Ono's.

You can't go there and take it seriously, the only reason to is when you are totally hammered and still rearing to party and want to have a dance - although I often find myself surrounded by girls who look about 16, wearing no clothes and think they are Christina in her Dirrty video.

It is dirty and horrid, you wait ages for a tiny drink that is expensive, you can't walk three steps without being hit on and it is just so damn rough. Bouncers are a joke, none of the staff actually care about you and if you manage to leave without being stolen from, argued with, hit on or spending all of your money then you are lucky.

If you can laugh at yourself and are desperate to keep going then it'll do. And when you wake up the next day and realise you went there, snogged some random person and spent all your money, you say 'Ono'

..hence the name...

tw0106 - 10 Oct 2008 16:14
Worst thing about this pub, the bouncers.

They do randomly pick people they dont like the look of and try to pick a fight with them.

The karoke is good, Kerri ahs the best selection around.

It is a meat market, any women who go there you will eb hit on by sleazy guys and alot of them wont respect your virtue too much.

There was one person killed by being pushed a bouncer last year, they fell and cracked their head open.

Have also seen a bouncer "pad down" a girl paying particular attention to padding her breasts.

That being said the band nights they have are good, not as good as the Loaded dogs but still decent. And they do run a good battle of the bands every year.
prime - 22 Jul 2008 15:00
This is the bestist pub for karaoke. On every sunday night about 8. Pity about the drunks who ther al day. Can't have every thing. No football on then so havn't come across the bloke that rythin stick talked about.
anonymous - 23 Jun 2008 17:12
Great pub. Cheep beer and food. One of the cheepest pubs locally. Local crowd are pretty friendly. Can get crowded when a big game on. Only downside is that annoying kiwi knobhead who keeps changing the football over to obscure southern hemisphere rugby matches. Pub needs to have a firm policy on what games it is going to show. Hope he isn't the govenor.
rhythmstick - 8 Jun 2008 11:08
I didn't even make it within 30 feet of the door before the bouncer starting swearing at me. Politely I asked him why he felt the need to swear at me and he called me a C*#$ and told me to F%#$ off. I tried to make a complaint against the bouncer and found that there was no way to. Eventually i got in after the manager had finished shouting at the bouncer. Food was poor, service was ok. Nothing special. I do not recommend this place to anyone of any age, it should be shut down and replaced with something that people will actually enjoy.

I would like to point out that I was in no way aggressive at any time towards any of the staff or the bouncers. Polite questions that i asked were answered with shouting and swearing. Just because I am 18 does not make me irresponsible.

In summary:

Food - not worth it
bouncers - might as well have employed the trash they are trying to keep out; causing more trouble than they prevent and overall ruining my night out.
service - ok not great, but not the worst

Silvergizmo - 11 May 2008 00:52
Love it love it love it!!!!!! o'neils is the best!!!!
purrr - 10 Feb 2008 16:27
I went 2 Oneils again the other night and i was refused entry for being with a short girl even though i produced id and have been in there many times before. Not impressed! x

jordan19 - 17 Dec 2007 10:38
Was going to try this place but was warned that over the last 25 years there have been more Murders, Manslaughters, GBH's and violence in and around this place than any other pub in the area. Apparently a bouncer killed someone about 5 years ago with one punch and a bloke stabbed two other customers to death over a trivial matter. I think I will take my Mother for Sunday Lunch elsewhere.
offthewagon07 - 27 Nov 2007 20:01
Had a wkd tym ere the otha nite!! Good lookin blokes an all :) xx
jordan19 - 1 Nov 2007 13:12
O'Neills is the only decent pulling joint/cattle market for miles. Im confused by other posts, so a quick survival guide:

1. Dont remonstrate with the bouncers. Why would you? Its like putting your arm in a meat-slicer - you just dont.

2. Keep your eyes open for lairy groups. Avoid trouble before it starts - its easy enough to move away and go and stand near some nice ladies instead.

3. Dont give it the big-un. You'll soon meet someone who thinks they're rock as well. Cue an avalanche of glass and bouncer-meat.

4. Respect a woman's virtue, even if you cannot vouch for it.
senberbex - 28 Sep 2007 16:49
My god! Closing? Can this be true? That'd be great! Maybe a decent club will open in it's place?
anonymous - 26 Sep 2007 11:26
Closing soon, or so I heard. If it does, I'll be doing riverdance on it's grave.
Albert_Campion - 19 Sep 2007 11:39
the original and best "Fight Club'. still a dump after all these years.

I'm welling up...
DavidWaspnest - 14 Sep 2007 16:23
You're a girl. Bouncers are sweet to ladies. If you're a guy, it's a different story, trust me.

I have tried talking to the bouncers, they won't listen and just get aggressive when you try to reason with them. If you detect anger towards the bouncers in these posts, it's with good reason. Glad you feel safe in there but it's not like that for everyone.
anonymous - 3 Aug 2007 11:19
If you can handle yourself, this place is fine and you can have a really good night out.
Yes, you can get weird sleezy blokes there, but tell them where to go and you can dance in peace.
Staff are pleasant, doorman are fine (can't stand people who slag off doorman just coz they're bigger than them...bet you don't do it to their faces!!!) and the music is pretty good with drinks at good prices.
We usually finish up here.
Well done guys, great place!
Pink_Lady_100 - 3 Aug 2007 10:24
To the bouncer who can (amazingly) read :

Look at the reviews your club is getting. It's you and your mug head mate bouncers that are responsible for the low rating on this website. It used to be a fun place, now all I hear is negative reviews about you lot. If you're cool with being solely responsible, more power to you.

Please TRY and remember that you are there for the safety of everyone that goes in there. You are NOT there to intimidate and bully, despite what your wet dreams may tell you. My brother in law is an official bouncer (that means he's registered, I ain't explaining THAT to you, take all day) and he's frankly disgusted with the way you trained monkeys deal with situations. Show some class yeah?

I don't write to influence decisions on your superiors, I write so that the next innocent person doesn't get victimised by what frankly has become a seriously dodgy night spot to frequent. Don't worry, you won't be seeing me again.
anonymous - 14 Jul 2007 23:57
swarm absolutly rock this venue , this is a cover band of note..
anonymous - 31 May 2007 01:19
Unbelieveably, today we were asked to leave the beer
garden-the beer garden!-of this place because they
"don't have a family license".
We spent loads of time here last year with our baby-
in fact we were here a couple of weekends ago,and
other families were present- and no-one ever
mentioned that we weren't welcome.Perhaps they should
put a sign up, and then people would know not to
come and spend their money in this big, empty, depressing hole. With no real beer.

anonymous - 1 May 2007 23:11
Well someone has to like this place so I guess it's me. Late licence & loads of cabs outside to get home. Massive pub wiv lots of totty flying about. Great for a late night of boozing but only once in a blue moon, ok?
white_van_man - 5 Mar 2007 18:53
One Word - Dive

Do go here if you want to get into a fight for no reason, have your bird harrassed by other men (While your talking to her)or get beaten up by the bouncers (Plastic Gangsters with big attitude - who hit women). Absolute joke that this place is allowed to be open till 3am, in fact absolute joke that this place IS OPEN AT ALL(Council must be getting a big brown envelope). Think I would rather be in iraq. I feel sorry for the people that live next door. Avoid at all costs
Ak1 - 16 Jan 2007 14:15
I didn't think the pub part was too bad... But the club was really, truely awful... I never thought I'd say it, but i'd actually choose to go to Romford than this place again!
drunkmarv - 14 Nov 2006 10:20
This place must be some kind of elaborate joke. An O'Neill's. Next to one of the busiest roundabouts in East London. Clientele seem to be late-teenagers and gropey drunks.

Went once. Never, ever again.
Albert_Campion - 17 Oct 2006 20:26
Last time I went, three of us were threatened by the clientle, one by a bouncer, my friend was electrocuted (no, really) and I read in the paper the following week that someone got stabbed outside shortly after we left. AND it's crap in there!
patrickjsm - 6 Sep 2006 04:18
AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!

I used to be very skeptical about reading posts like 'Oh I got kicked out of here for no reason.' but seriously, this place has become dangerous! I am not exaggerating and this time round, it's not the punters you have to watch, IT'S THE BOUNCERS!

Me and my mate won a Karaoke competition and had thirty pounds placed behind the bar but due to a misunderstanding and an embarrassing lack of communication between bouncers, they deemed it neccessary to escort me and my non drinking alcohol friend (yep, we were stone cold sober) outside. I promptly asked why twice before one bouncer almost launched himself at me, calling me a C**T and trying to get at me! The other bouncers held him back but also continued to hurl abuse! I was in a state of shock. Surely bouncers are paid to CONTROL their tempers, not lose them? Calmly speaking, non aggressively, me and my friend tried to reason with them but were escorted further out onto the road and warned 'You're beginning to piss me off now mate.'

We have since spoken to the controlling forces at O'neils and were told at one point 'The bouncers are nothing to do with us', then got an apology from the manageress Nikki (thanks for not listening sweetheart) only to have her take the apology back and officially bar us from ever going again! We had been going there for twelve years but it has never been this bad and FIVE bouncers walked us out a second time!

If you continue to go there, you do so at your own risk. If you are mugged, your girlfriend groped, beaten up or seriously hurt, you will NOT be given any support from the fat lazy arrogant monkeys they call bouncers. Be warned, your opinion will not be listened to and if you continue to argue, eventually be barred.

Please, for all the decent and mild mannered patrons out there looking for a good night, O'neils has become everything everyone has ever warned you about. Steer clear, or venture in at your peril.
anonymous - 4 Sep 2006 12:20
Awful. Very expensive, especially for the area. Full of undesirables and no decent drinks. Ona Friday night, the room next door turns into the nightclub from hell and attracts even more undesirables. The only possible saving grace is the large beer garden, which provides a lovely view of the traffic jam leading up to Green Man roundabout.
Banner - 2 Aug 2006 12:52
we have to defend this place. yes it's a hole but it's our hole! its just a big drunken bundle of fun. never know who you're goin to meet. ill have you know the bouncers are very friendly and useful to carry you out when passed out on the dancefloor and placing you on a wall outside. the drinks are wellpriced and provide u with enough beer googles to pull everytime! yay/ we love it.
anonymous - 30 Mar 2006 14:23
This WAS my local were i just to go and have a laugh on a friday night. due to one ignorant door man i no longer drink in this pub. although me and my mates always got on with the majority of the staff this pub has recently recruited new doorstaff who are rude and very unwelcoming. one bouncer in particular spoke to me one night and told me i shouldnt drink alcohol and barred me and told me come back when you are not gonna drink. he told me to come back after a couple of weeks so i did and within 30 seconds of being in there i was barred for life for no reason at all (after paying to get in).
anonymous - 21 May 2005 15:13
I've ended up here so many times over the past eight years after having a few liveners elsewhere, (generally in the City or Wanstead). A good, sound venue that always delivers. Favourite memory is falling into an eight foot ditch full up with water whilst walking down Hollybush Hill on the way home one cold November night. Then just about managing to climb out.
PieFace - 17 Mar 2005 13:16
o'neill's Leytonstone is the type of bar you finish up in, it always plays good music, has a great atmosphere and nice staff, it's cheap and has a large selection on draughts, wines and Alco pops. Although it's not open till 5, it has big screens and plasmas, sky sports and a typical but nice o'neill's menu, I would never classify it as a local's pub but more of a place you'd go to occasionally just as something a little more special;-)
astonmartinmo1 - 11 Dec 2004 20:46
The doormen are cranky and unfriendly, we were just trying to decide whether to pay 5!!!! for a cheap suburban pub!!! and we got rude treatment from the doormen. That certainly helped us to decide NOT to go!!
Jodie - 22 Oct 2004 23:50
ONeils...always a great fall back, if you just fancy staying local...Ive had more good nights in this place than bad...yeah, there is a strange mix of people, but I spose thats what I like about the place..its certainly not pretentious, throw on ur jeans and ur heels and let urself loose on the dance floor - theres always a touch of eye candy in the place to keep urself amused and DJ Pat/Tag always knows how to keep the crowd going...dont knock it till youve tried it and if u didnt like it....go back, but this time order doubles...

Kellie - 16 Sep 2004 15:45
Jon-as negative as ure comment is and mine very positive-i agree-it does the job perfectly!
Emily - 10 Sep 2004 16:34
Fantastic! Ok venue can be bit greasy, the guys a little past it but i giv 'em ther due-a mans gota try! The Bouncers: BEN! RAY! U BABES!!!! DJ Pat on fridays and saturdays wen the band aint playin-he such a dude!Me, elle and linz adore the oneil guys as they want us to hav a wiked time and do woteva we want! Ben u king, ask for a single ciggy off him and he gave me the packet-That is a DUUUUDE! Great nights, great memories, c ya soon boys!!
Emily - 10 Sep 2004 16:32
O'Neill's is a great pub to drink at. With it's live entertainment everyweek it's a place to be!!!
James - 9 Jun 2004 06:24
Went there over the weekend and had an absolute ball.Thankyou all in O'Neills.
The doormen are there for a reason "Raoul" To protect us girls from LOSERS like you!

Abby - 3 Jun 2004 15:59
oneils is great!!!
raj - 21 May 2004 16:31
I cannot recommend this bar at all. It has nothing going for it. The bouncers are little children who actually start most of the fights and stir up trouble in the venue, probably out of boredom. The last time I went a dispute resulted in one of these 'persons' stealing my coat and trampling on it. How professional? security are supposed to be there to make us feel safe, not intimidated. These bouncers abuse their trust. I suppose I can take comfort in the knowledge that at least that particular 'person' is still stuck doing his dead end job, standing in the cold at night of weekend dealing with beered up yobs while I went out and bought a new coat.

I'm not sour or anything . . .
raoul duke - 25 Mar 2004 13:31
Love it!
Paul - 22 Mar 2004 04:06
O'Neils is definately not for the feint hearted. Yes it is utterly devoid of character but stumble in there pissed when all other options of continuing the night have been exhausted, pay the 5 tax on the door and have a riot. It's full of amusing characters, weirdos and nurses. The last time I was in there my mate and I were chatting to a couple of young ladys with tattoos and rolling their own fags. It's got a dance floor whcih plays what I can only describe as a mix of hip hop fusion mixed with mc hammer and motorhead. It's a late drink party place not to be taken too seriously. P.S there is a nice curry house opposite.
jason - 11 Mar 2004 00:15
Chav Central. It's a festering boil on the face of East London. Utterly devoid of character, taste or entertainment. Just a nasty little drunken hole. Avoid.
Slipperduke - 11 Feb 2004 15:03
This O' Neils seems a like a bit of a hole from the outside and its not much differrent on the inside. What can be siad about it is that on a friday or saturday night you can go there, get pissed, dance in one half or sit down at a table in the other half. Can take an eternity to be served. If you go with a good bunch of people you'll have a good laugh.
