A very expensive Fullers pub hard by the Cathedral.A CAMRA discount is given on presentation of a CAMRA card. This has recently won the G.P.G. Town Pub of the Year.

Historic Fullers pub with usual good quality beer but on the tourist trail with prices to match.
ellisref - 2 Apr 2016 08:40
A decent pint of HSB as always in here, lots of wine for the ladies too.
You enter through beautiful curved wood/glass doors, and find a world of tweed jackets and usually well healed ale drinkers within.
Food is served and a large portion of the pub set aside as such, but the casual drinker is always welcomed in my experience though on rare occasions the place is overrun with loudly braying Tarquin types for reasons unknown to me.
Slightly off the beaten track near the cathedral, on leaving it's usual to bump into some confused sort who has been trying to find the pub for the last hour or so...

The Wykeham Arms was my final Winchester pub and it's a nice Fullers pub near one of the city gates and the college, whilst being not too far from the castle. This is a very nice area of Winchester. It was very busy on my Saturday evening visit. Most people were drinking in the L-shaped bar. But there were also 2 more formal dining areas and an outdoor area I did not venture too. Standing at the bar felt a little uncomfortable. This doesn't seemed to be the done thing. I was asked twice if I needed serving, when I already had a drink in front of me. Another pub that is popular with the more well-heeled residents of Winchester. Ales were Gales HSB & Seafarers & Fullers Oliver's Island & London Pride. Unusually for a Fullers pub, they also stock a non-Fullers ale - Flower Pots Goodens Gold.
blue_scrumpy - 16 Aug 2015 15:58
It certainly is a great pub, atmospheric, relaxed with the full Fullers range and some guests. Always well kept. Prices are high however, even for Winchester. Paid £10.70 for a pint of Goodens Gold, a G & T and a bag of crisps.
john5339 - 29 May 2015 12:51
A tremendous gem of a pub. Atmospheric, great beer and food. Fuller's range plus a couple of guests. Eclectic furnishings and the whole affair appears very well run indeed. Highly recommended.

Love this place, having been here in 2009. First time back and exactly as i remember it. To be cherished.... Places like this wont be around forever.
Mappiman - 14 Jul 2013 18:01
While it's certainly endearingly quaint to sit at school desks while quaffing a superb but expensive pint, such seating arrangements may not to be everyone's taste, not least because the seats are immovable. Most of the place is given over to food, so for drinking it's a desk in the bar area if one's free, or stand. There's a handful of benches outside at the back, with pleasant views of the residents' car park, doubtless quite pleasant nevertheless if the weather's suitable. Don't expect to see much change from a tenner if you ask for a pint and a large glass of wine.

On our visit (5pm Sunday), the staff were more attractive than useful, and it took an age to get served. The food is excellent but pretentious (served, for instance, not on plates but on wooden chopping board affairs), and rather overpriced: they seem to be aiming at the proper restaurant market (you can easily spend £15 or more on a main course), but you can't get away from it being a glorified pub.

To fit in with the rest of the clientele, you may wish to avail yourself of an old school tie and sports jacket. Dogs are welcome. Overall, good for a special occasion meal, and worth a visit for a pint, but I wouldn't make it a regular casual venue. Wetherspoons it ain't -- in both good and bad ways.
EarlOfEmsworth - 8 May 2013 13:01
A very decent pub, smart attentive bar staff and beer that is consistantly on good form, the HSB in particular though non-Fullers guest beers are often on tap too.
Tucked out of the way behind the cathedral and obviously geared for tourists and food, but the casual drinker is always welcomed with unfailing politeness in my experience.
If you want a Fullers pub this is a far better option than the nearby Bishop on the Bridge which has seen a marked decline in general standards in the last year or so.
Steve_Smythe - 11 Nov 2012 12:21
Very well run pub. Interesting bric-a-brac everywhere. Friendly staff. Not in the cheap catagory for food or drink though. Still 7.5/10.
roselily - 8 Sep 2012 21:13
Always enjoy a visit to the Wykeham. Not tried the food yet but the Beer is constantly good and pleased to see some Non Fullers beers on offer.
nivramkram - 13 Apr 2012 13:32
Decent pub, although obviously geared a bit towards the tourist trade it still serves a great pint and I have always received a warm welcome from those behind the bar. Am at the moment finding it a slightly better option cost and quality wise than the usually fantastic Black Boy.
back2ploughlane - 1 Dec 2011 01:25
Lovely pub, no kids under 14 permitted, beer is good and always a local on. Food is a tad pretentious but its good fare at relatively steep prices. This is winchester so shiny old pubs are what you would expect - this is a great example provided your not bringing the family
parmantom - 17 Oct 2011 12:54
Dropped into this pub last Tuesday. The HSB was in great condition. Couldn't stay long but will be back in a week or two for a real 'session'. The place is a true gem, hidden behind the Cathedral and next to the College. Worth hunting out. 8/10 from me.
wolvesfan - 16 Oct 2011 12:21
Nice pub excellent well kept beer.

Unfortunately the over priced food prices let the pub down badly. 10 for a ploughmans lunch, 7 for a BTL with one rasher of bacon and a portion ( I use the term loosely) of 12 chips served in a half pint mug 3.

I for one will not be going back.
ericstadd - 13 Sep 2011 21:57
Located a short walk from the cathedral, Fullers ale on tap which are well kept the lager price is eye watering (4 plus for a Peroni).

Well heeled customers, emphasis on food.... looks like you need to book to get a table on a weekend.

Friendly and efficient bar staff.
beershot - 11 Apr 2011 15:03
A lovely pub in a beautiful part of this beautiful city. The beer was great and atmosphere buzzing when we visited on Saturday night. The charming interior is a feast for the eyes and bar staff friendly and considerate even though the place was very busy. Can't wait to return.
BiffoBeer - 11 Apr 2011 12:36
I am a Fullers Robot...I am a Fullers Robot...... good beers from Fullers though- excess of kitsch rubbish plastered around the place- its not a bad pub at all- just the right size with its two bars...please staff- stop pretending Britain is sophisticated because you pour the trendy crisps into a little bowl for me!!!! Scores 6 and its lucky.
alezilla - 8 Apr 2011 20:13
Hidden behind Winchester college on a back street.

Old school desks to sit at with a slot for coin donations which were to be given to the cathedral if so desired. A mobile phone free zone.

Excellent drop of Cheriton Pots.
Splodge68 - 19 Feb 2011 20:25
What a great pub! Walk through the Cathedral close and there it is on the corner. Open the weird doors and your into a bozzer that shows it's allegiance to the City's academical leanings, even the tables are old school desks with ink wells. Beers are Fullers/Gales in good nick. I understand it was recently awarded the Hampshire Dining pub of the year award, if that means anything and I've always found the food to be good. This is a pub where you can explore and find another little nook or cranny and it's a bit like you've wondered into an edition of the 'Antiques Roadshow'. Always packed, which says a lot about this fine establishment.' I must visit again as other reviewers seem to be seeing it through different 'goggles'.
BARRY2771 - 23 Dec 2010 16:44
Recently moved to Winchester area, and finding our feet regarding good pubs with good food and good atmosphere, Sadly this is not one of them. We were disappointed with the beer, the food was cold and a bit of a let down. Description on menu was very appealing, need to show the chef i think. Won't be trying again. Dezrezza
dezrezza10 - 21 Nov 2010 23:58
Pint of Flowerpot (3.4%) priced at 3.20 - no danger of encouraging binge drinking here.
However, the pub is very nice and you can see that the profits are spent on the attractive decor.
The dining area is very formal, and I can't imagine tucking into pub grub here.
ed_hodge - 24 Oct 2010 19:54
18 months ago I had a mediocre meal here whilst the pub management went through the Gales/Fullers transition. Decided to give it another ago and booked for a Saturday night - and gave up after a forty minute wait. To be fair, I did received an apology from the manager, but damage was done and walked home for a good round of cheese on toast.

Beer still well kept and there was the noticable addition of Cheritons' Flower Pots.
normality2000 - 18 Sep 2010 22:14
Unique pub between the Cathedral and WInchester College. A wide mix of patrons, including some fairly eccentic ones! Interior well worth a look at - lots of memorabilia on the walls and hanging from the ceiling, and old school desks to sit at. Beers are Fullers/Gales. Bit pricey, but in good condition. Also you'd have to go a long way to find pub toilets as plush as the ones here (hand moisteriser in the gents!)

Downsides are the prices, and the fact that it has an emphasis on seated dining, which can make finding somewhere to sit if you just want a drink difficult.
lemski - 12 Sep 2010 22:23
Don't plan to eat here unless you have at least 2 hours to spare.

We planned to have supper here before the opening concert of the Winchester Festival and booked a table for 6pm when food service starts. We mentioned when we booked, when we arrived, and when we ordered our food that we had to leave in time for a concert starting at 7.30. Our order was taken c 6.10. When no food had arrived by 6.40 a waiter apologised and explained that because of a computer glitch our order had not reached the kitchen. However our order was getting priority and was on its way. At 6.50 it hadn't arrived but we were assured that it was "just coming". At 7pm we payed for our drinks and left. Even if our order had arrived immediately, we didn't have enought time to eat, pay and get to the concert, a fact which didn't seem to register with the staff. The reaction was "well, we did apologise"- as if that made amends.

As the reviews say, this is a very attractive pub. However, we thought the menu was limited - on one of the hottest days of the year there wasn't a single salad on the menu- and pricey. The quality of the food might have justified the price, but as we didn't get any we couldn't judge.

We suspect that this place is living off it's previous reputation and being on the tourist map, it doesn't matter so much to them if the customesr are dissatisfied. We certainly won't go there again, and as we live within reach of Winchester, will advise others of our experience.
JJ1 - 10 Jul 2010 09:00
This doesn't look much from the outside, but is very pleasant and quite unexpected once you do venture in. Quite a large pub, with the first bar you get to geared more towards drinking with the rest of the pub being more food orientated. There's plenty to look at with the walls being literally plastered with photographs. Staff were friendly and helpful even to the extent of apologising profusely when a customer's dog ran from the bar in to the restaurart area - hardly their fault.
Food was very good and of a restuarant quality, and I understand it was recently awarded the Hampshire Dining pub of the year award. To be honest I find this slightly surprising - the food was good and I'd recomend it, but I can't believe it was the best in the county. If so, Hampshire is a long way behind Somerset.
Beers were Gales HSB and Seafarers, plus Fuller's Chiswik Ale and London Pride. Unfortunately the only cider was Strongbow.
Blackthorn - 6 Feb 2010 21:27
A very posh pub. Not one for the "young ones" (although I can talk, I'm 25). Beer was Gales/Fullers and was very nice. Bar staff friendly and welcoming.
robfrancis - 12 Dec 2009 16:27
Really enjoyed a recent visit to The Wykeham Arms for a few drinks one Saturday evening with friends.

Staff are very friendly and the wine list is compact but loaded with good grapes, a nice selection of ales (but sadly not ciders) will suit a range of tastes.

The interior is olde worlde, but very much in keeping with the area. There are a few tables with heaters outside at the rear of the pub along with a small number of car parking spaces.

We didn't eat on this visit but the restaurant area was busy, many tables were reserved, so it would seem booking is advisable.
Beer_Fan - 27 Jul 2009 13:43
Very much a gastro pub. If you venture beyond the small very crowded area near the door, you get asked "if you've got a reservation" and then presented with a poncey high-priced menu. From then on, your drinks are fetched for you, so a tip is expected. In fairness the food is excellent, but this is very much a place for a long evening out over dinner and wine, not a place for a beer drinking session. The beers are all Fullers anyway.
Trev - 3 Apr 2009 22:37
We really enjoyed this place- it has a nice, comfortable air about it. The staff were very friendly and we chatted up a few of the regulars and their dogs. Good quality ales that tasted well kept.
fr21555 - 16 Feb 2009 19:36
I visited the pub a couple of years ago, and hope to visit again this season. My partner and I were made very welcome and shown to a lovely, nicely decorated and comfortable room across the road from the pub. We had a dinner and breakfast, and the quality of the food was superb, far exceeding our expectations for pub food. I don't recall having to wait particularly long for service. It's a very charming pub, with bags of character, and a real joy to sit in for a few hours drinking good beer. It also made a useful base for exploring the city, particularly wandering alongside the college buildings, which are very attractive. A lovely spot to visit, I recommend wholeheartedly. Plus, they accept doggies - always a bonus.
kyliemo - 19 Dec 2008 10:24
Provided you can get served the beer here is good and one of the most reasonably priced in Winchester.

Try the sausages in the evening - great fun!
Ekohawk - 31 Oct 2008 14:59
Actually one of the best value pubs in Winchester. Great food always and some of the best kept beer in town. I prefer to pay and get quality rather than second rate, this pub is always first rate. There are some good characters - watch the look on everyones face when someones mobile goes off!! Also good for watching Americans (is in guide books) ordering halves of Guinness. Great wine list
ILBuono - 24 Oct 2008 15:51
A very characterful pub in a very characterful city. Large and bedecked with various old nick-nacks, pictures etc., I thought the atmosphere was reminiscent of an Oxford or Cambridge pub, perhaps unsurprisingly as Winchester College is just round the corner. I particularly liked the use of old school desks as tables, although as GuideDogSaint acknowledges, practically they are a little awkward! The beer range is as GuideDogSaint indicates: I too had a pint of the Butser, which was nice but not amazing. A lot of the bar was given over to dining, and from the number of reservations, I fancy the food is probably of good quality.
grecian - 13 Oct 2008 12:04
a quirky place tucked away behind the cathedral and a nice place to retreat to after exertions in town. The ales are on good form and the staff were very pleasant.
ChrisP87 - 5 Aug 2008 17:37
I took my wife this morning. As a child she lived 50 yards away so it was particularly interesting for her. On hearing of her interest the staff could not have been more friendly or helpful, even taking a picture off the wall for her to look at. I had a very good pint of HSB (not always the best kept beer), and the smells from the kitchen made us wish we could have stayed for lunch. We will most definitely return.
Meadway - 12 Jul 2008 16:06
Quirky pub, lots of rooms off a main bar. Got there at about 11.30 am yesterday and from the outside I wasn't sure it was open. Dark and candlelit inside, schooldesks are a little awkward to sit at.

Assume this is ex Gales; HSB, Butser, Pride and Chiswick were on. Pint of Butser was nice enough.

Worth seeking out.
GuideDogSaint - 13 Jan 2008 14:10
I agree pricey - but then what is the value of keeping mobile phone clad chavs out!
Lovely big old pub, great inerior, spotless clean, and pleasent staff too, cosy.
Nice, worth the extra few pence!
secretreveiwer - 10 Jan 2008 15:59
Pricey but worth visiting - a real Winchester institution.

Beers are pretty good and the food is excellent, though you generally have to book in advance if you want to eat during the busiest times of the week, unless you opt for the bar snack sausages (as mentioned by a previous reviewer).
bazza9 - 7 Nov 2007 16:57
Quality traditional pub. It is the local for the teachers of winchester college and has strong connections (hence the school desks mentioned below).
Food is expensive but i havent tried it so cant comment. Actually i had a sandwich once for 5 which was terrible. Sliced white bread and no chips/crisps to go with it.
Avoid if you dont like ponciness or are jelous of posh people i suppose
chinois - 29 Aug 2007 12:22
Very traditional interior, full of character. Good selection of beers/ales though introducing guest ales from small breweries would be a a good addition. Sell good quality sausages as a bar snack for 45p each after 6pm which is a fantastic idea.
aaroncp - 27 Aug 2007 11:28
Still doing a sound pint of ale (my Butser was good), absolutely heaving Saturday lunchtime with people eating which unfortunately meant that we drank up and bogged off pretty quick, there were no tables left. They must be doing something right.

It is indeed a little expensive, but I think you get what you pay for here.

Watch out for random cucumbers lying on the pavement if youre walking down from Canon Street, theyre a potential death trap (copyright Lynn Faulds-Wood).
Quinno - 23 Jul 2007 20:07
Fantastic Pub/Inn.
I've visited for food and beer on numerous occasions and stayed twice, my first overnight stop was in 1994 and then recently in 2006. The beer, food and staff are great, well worth several visits. The accomodation is expensive, but certainly worth the treat, can't be faulted. Also a superb breakfast (lots).
I look forward to visiting again on my next trip across the water.
Ricardo_Anchilini - 21 Jun 2007 11:05
The Chiswick Ale was flat and the wine prices are a rip off - 125ml and 175ml measures only.
The school benches are uncomfortable and do not cater for groups larger than two - get rid of them!. The central heating must have been turned up to full power as it was too hot. The management should get rid of the smelly dogs which are allowed in to the bar area.

dorsetknob - 4 Mar 2007 12:57
Best all round pub in Winchester - highly recommended
JohnBonser - 1 Feb 2007 12:26
I like the Wykeham too. Cosy and good beer.

And I like it even more having read Poiuytrewq's comment.
Albert_Campion - 19 Jan 2007 15:12
This pub is crap - went for a Christmas pint with my wife and 1 month old daughter - was refused service because they don't serve children under 14 - had to leave. Very annoying.

I'm boycotting this pub now - do the same - its not that good - there are plenty of good pubs in Winchester - go there instead.

poiuytrewq - 23 Dec 2006 22:51
Love love love love this place. Great old fashioned curved entrance doors. Great at Christmas time with the roaring fire and dark red walls and candle light. Free nibbles at the bar is a welcome treat. But boiling hot in the summer due to lack of ventilation.
anonymous - 4 Dec 2006 17:46
Yeah, manners maketh man, according to the Wykeham's shield thing. Appalling manners apparently. My experience at the Wykeham is one of consistently piss-poor service, piss poor staff, a piss poor manager and piss-poor atmosphere.
anonymous - 10 Aug 2006 14:28
Lurgy - I also love the Wykeham Arms, I did not however, go with your wife but with my father, mother, boyfriend and indeed lots of friends on various dates over the last year. What a place! If you visit or live in Winchester you MUST make the pilgrimage to the Wykeham Arms and enjoy the only place in the city that celebrates the town's schooling and military history with such charm.

The ales are indeed good, the food can be compared side-by-side to an evening at the Chesil Rectory and the Hotel de Vin and the staff always very nice.

I have two tips: if you're planning to dine - book and if you take your date there - she may well fancy the bar men who have the manners of anyone who went to the college!

Enjoy!

anonymous - 26 Jul 2006 15:26
I love the Wykeham. I first discovered it by accident whilst walking in Winchester with my Dad. We both love a good pub and this is a great pub. True you'll find the clientele might be a cut above your average boozer but they're mostly friendly. As mentioned in other reviews a mixture of locals and visitors. The pub is part of the Casque Mark scheme and deserves this. The beer is excellently kept if you are a Real Ale man. Food is really very good and not too pricey.

I have stayed at this pub (with my wife). The Breakfast room is genteel, service is fine.

One hidden treasure is the collection of Ronald Searle original cartoons (he who illustrated St. Trinian's). It's in one of the many dining rooms, suspect you need to book.

If you want to eat or stay book in advance.

Menu was not (and probably will still not be to my wife's liking). However this was not a problem since the Chef was very accommodating. When we tried to order a plain green salad our waiter returned saying the Chef would be mortified if that's all he could provide. We both ate well. Now, how often do you get attention to service like that?

Last visit - earlier this month (June 2006)
lurgy - 26 Jun 2006 08:47
Was quite quiet when I visted on Saturday afternoon, didn't really see any pub-school bottom-antics or Gordon Gekkos when I was there, just a good pub with well-kept beer (the old Gales range plus the newly-imposed Fullers) and polite staff. Which is good enough for me really.

No mobile phones allowed I noted, now that's worth something?!

I'd recommend it. Sitting at the old school desks was quite a treat, though I'd have to say that a lick of paint on the windows wouldn't go amiss.
Quinno - 4 Jun 2006 17:23
I don't want to share a pub with oik's and ASBO's. But equally don't want to share it with a bunch of hooray henry's. The only pub I have ever been in where I have been met by the landlord and asked 'can I help you?'
This place is not a pub it's a tea room. I really dislike it. Unwelcoming, pretntious and the food not all it is cracked up to be. Unlike any other 'pub' I have ever been in. Strictly for posers only. Avoid.
Grossy - 27 May 2006 02:49
A very fine pub. Personally, I don't go to a pub for food, so, if anything, I preferred it in its former incarnation before the fire. However, I have never felt less than welcome there, and have always encountered reasonable and sociable clientele.
dirigent - 18 Apr 2006 14:18
The sort of place that pikeys and oiks dislike so much (see earlier reviews); a civilised atmosphere, great beer and excellent food. One of the best pubs in the UK.
sross - 17 Apr 2006 21:22
Its always been good and when the previous landlord was there it won pub of the year and deserved it. Too many nasily american tourists in there now and arrogant young barmen who dress like gordon gecco.still blinding when youve sat by the fire drinking stella all afternoon. I know the school desks look good but come on! I could barley fit in one when I was at bloody school for christsakes. p.s. the sausages and mustard on the bar are fab.
bigforestdave - 29 Mar 2006 21:19
Beautiful pub will a lot of wannabe-posh fat people. Definitely eat there if you can afford to.
seasiderMM - 28 Feb 2006 19:54
Went to the Wykeham Arms last night (valentines Day) having booked a great table in the restaurant area at the front/far side. Met old friends who live locally and had a sublime meal with attentive staff in a homely atmosphere. Walking through the various rooms, everyone seemed to be getting what they wanted, I find it's difficult to combine dining and drinking in the same venue, but the Wykeham Arms has it just right. Whether you pop in for a pint and some crisps or a three course delightful meal, I would recommend this gem, & will certainly return in the near future. Even the two chaps who had been stood up and disappointedly shared the table for four nearby, seemed to be enjoying themselves by the end of the evening!!
HampshireLass - 15 Feb 2006 08:47
Horses for courses!

I personally loved the place, but it's not for the Stella Artois type.

The bar staff were great when I visited. They even remembered what I was drinking when I returned in the morning for hair of dog! :-)
AshingdonMan - 13 Feb 2006 22:42
A nice, if kitschy, looking boozer with a number of places to settle down with a drink.

Or there would be, if getting a drink weren't such a project. I waited far too long for my pint, after having to try three different spots around the bar to even get my order in. When I got it, it was slopped over the side of the glass, and my change was then plonked down into the puddle, despite my hand being out for it. I'd been thinking of having supper there, but reconsidered and took my appetite elsewhere. I went away with the impression that the locals who love the place really seemed to enjoy it, but as a visitor (especially one who happened to be traveling alone that day), I didn't find it all that welcoming.
Hodsthorn - 5 Feb 2006 01:04
I like the Wykeham arms, I stay there quite often on business. I love the beer (I'm no real ale expert, but I know what I like and it's HSB). The clientele can be a bit loud, but I am usually there with friends not looking to meet people. The sausages are out of this world.
dmarson - 13 Jan 2006 15:59
The tables double as collection points for 'the cathedral' with little slots for your loose change. Well, isn't that nice. As if God can't fix his own roof with a miracle or something.

Collecting money for the cathedral - as if there aren't already enough reasons to hate the Wykeham Arms with a passion.
anonymous - 12 Jan 2006 11:26
It's like public school for adults. And it's full of morons. Don't even think about going there if you're an immigrant - know what I mean?
anonymous - 18 Nov 2005 15:28
Well done beezer, you have just demonstrated a fine example of the weak chinned local from this pub, 'and again I say thank god!' typical. The locals will not explore the city for the numerous excellent pubs, but remain entrenched with their poorly kept beer, over rated food and terrible staff that this pub provides. It is only this narrow minded, blown up toady approach that keeps it going, that and the tourists suckered by kitsch olde worlde tat. If you tried a good pub in town there may be hope for you, good beer kept well, intelligent company discussing a BROAD range of subjects and professional staff.
bornandbred - 12 Nov 2005 09:52
Thank you timb for expressing so eloquently what I feel about this pub and about the idiots who feel uneasy in there because they can't even string a coherent sentence together. Thank God the atmosphere frightens them away. Wetherspoons is definitely their rightful abode, and again I say, thank God.
beezer - 6 Nov 2005 15:38
This used to be the best local in Winchester, but now it's full of pretentious gits, avoid at all costs!
aberjed - 4 Nov 2005 20:07
Hats off to the Wykeham and the local licensing department. It's going to be open until the wee hours soon. Don't forget to get your last pint in there. Before long there'll be a kebab van outside too. Make some noise kids. It'll add to the local ambiance.
anonymous - 30 Sep 2005 12:15
This pub does, for sure, have a polite, middle-class clientele, many of them connected to the working life of the Cathedral or the College. If, like some of those commenting here, that is enough to send you off screaming, then so much the better: why would I want to share such a charming, welcoming, comfortable and cheery pub with such pea-brained bigots?

The beer selection is very fine indeed; the restaurant is of a high quality with a spectacular wine list; in winter, two huge hearth fires warm the place through; the atmosphere is cosy, friendly, and closely tied to the surroundings and history of the area. And if naming the gents 'Sidesmen' after the people who show folk to their seats in the Cathedral, or having old Winchester College desks as tables (with flowers in the ink wells) is too richly esoteric for you - as for one reviewer here - then All Bar One and Wetherspoons are waiting for you. The Wykeham embodies the cornerstones of what a truly great pub should: hospitality, community, history, and fine fine beer. And much more besides. I know of no finer pub.
timb - 27 Sep 2005 16:33
How can anyone give this pub a bad write up?, asks one contributor. Simple. Go there. I guess you might like it if you went to the 'right school'. Know what I mean? As for awards, accolades and Oscars, didn't The English Patient win an Oscar or two. Like the Wykeham arms it was awful, elitist, dull and full of characters you'd like to spend the rest of your life bog-washing.
anonymous - 14 Sep 2005 16:36
Agree with many others - nice building but full of people that think they are better than you - tossers

This is a truly lovely pub. Its location is wonderfully unique and the pub itself feels like the centre of what could easily be considered a village of Winchester. Inside the pub the two large open-fires cosy-up the dimly lit bar. Very extensive range of wines. Check out the sausages for sale at the bar (they used to be 40p) and the mulled wine in the winter months. Saturday night's are very busy and Sunday afternoon's are very...Sunday. If you want to avoid the Winchester dons and their associated elite drink at the main bar closest to the entrance, as the side bar is where this rather creaky crowd congregates. Having said that, they all seemed friendly enough to me and make up a rather interesting crowd. A great pub.

How can anyone give this pub a bad write up??, it has won Hampshire dining pub of the year numerous times, and has more other awards and acolades than the Oscars give out.
This is a pub that has not changed a bit inside but with its food and drink offering keeps up with the times. Yes I agree the manageress can be a bit stroppy, but look how busy the place is they have to retain some sort of order otherwise the place would go downhill.
This pub is perfect for anyone wanting away from the high street brands, and just disappear for a couple of hours.

One of my proudest moments is having been banned from this dreadful, preening hell-hole. Full of the most appalling public school tossers and ex-pupils of a school which reeks of elitism, corruption and racism. They have an infuriating toilet called 'the sidesman' which is reason alone to give it a rating of zero. If you're the sort of person who enjoys toasting crumpets on small boys' buttocks then this is the place for you. If you're even vaguely human, avoid it like the plague.

This pub has really gone downhill recently. Have stayed there 4 times previously in the College Bakehouse room and room/food/drink were excellent, but I will not visit again. We visited last weekend and Service was bad and food was below par. We were shocked that management were arrogant and condescending when we complained about the poor service and attitude of the staff.

Pretty much the perfect pub.
It's always a shame to have to leave.

In a world thats being turned upside down by the montrous creation of the "Chain Pub" its refreshing to visit a pub like the Wykeham Arms. The atmosphere is great with a blend of locals and vistors, food is good though tends to be on the expensive side, good range of beer and wine, great accomodation should you need it and by far the best thing is that you are unlikely to find a pair of White trainers or a baseball cap insight!

full of old school english toffs who think they're better than everyone else (including the landlord!) very dissapointed in this pub despite being recommended.. atmosphere? you'll find more on the moon!

Traditional english pub that features regularly in many guides to pubs and beer of the UK. Range of Gales beer (HSB etc.) are well kept and there is a decent range of wines.
Visitors will notice that it is influenced by its close proximity to the Cathedral and Winchester College (as old as Eaton, no less) and a range of paraphernalia dotted around the pub reflect this, from old school desks to the latin prose in the gents toilets.
Lunchtime food is overpriced and tends towards 'interesting' sandwiches; evening meals are expensive but superb.
Pub also provides accomodation across the road and you get to eat a hearty 'full-english' in a room not normally frequented by drinkers!

A classic English gents boozer, with a nice mixture of locals (some rather entertaining bow-tied Winchester types, including the landlord!), good beer, interesting wine list, wonderful food, great staff, good atmosphere.... I could go on. Very difficult to beat, and a must visit if you're in the vicinity.

This is the best pub I've ever been too. If it's not the best pub in the world I would like to know what beats it - it's an unforgettable place to go to.

wonderful food and a really lovely old pub. I've only been once, but would love to go back again.

Excellent traditional style pub close to the college and behind the cathedral. The walls are just covered with sporting and college items etc and some of the tables are actually old desks.

The atmosphere is welcoming and the staff are friendly and helpful. The Gales beers are well kept and excellent food is available too but it's a good idea to book at weekends. Rooms are available as well, but you just know it's going to be pricey.

Definitely worth a visit.
