user reviews of the Taw River Inn, Sticklepath

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I would say that this has to be a contender for one of the best pubs in the country.

Good selection of ales and wines and fantastic home cooked food, always a good handful of people in here but what I find amazing is the prices of the drinks!
Almost like a wetherspoons price structure but with a better atmosphere!

If more pubs lowered their prices maybe they we be this good.

10/10 Absolutely incredible.

Pubs in this region tend to attract few comments on this site, but not so as regards the Taw River which - as others drinkers have already pointed out - is a bit of a gem.

I don't know how they do it, but the pricing - of both food and drinks - is exceptionally reasonable, so much so that the place tends to be packed out, even on the soggiest of days. But they don't just come because it's cheap; the owners know and care about what they're serving and the food is consistently good.

If there's any negative, it's the lack of decent outside space but that's a minor grump. Sticklepath is darn lucky to be blessed with such a great boozer (not to mention the Devonshire Arms across the road, which is also worth a look).

Fantastic good value pub in unspoilt Devon village - handy for NT Finch Foundry property. Excellent and imaginative pub grub at very reasonable prices and a good choice of real ales - Tribute, Legend, Dragon's Breath and more on hand pump. Rattler Cider on draught too. Drinks and food all incredible value. Seems to be always busy (unsurprisingly!) so definitely need to book if eating.

Was quite busy for a Monday afternoon in wintertime and the beer was above average.

Had a pint in this pub on Sunday of last week after visiting The Finch Foundry opposite. Warm and welcoming pub and friendly staff. Food must be good as it was fully booked. Good beer and even better cider.

Astonishingly good value pub in a small village nestling under the slopes of Dartmoor. The place was packed with eaters and drinkers on a dull Friday lunchtime in October, lured like me (presumably) by Bays Bitter at a frankly unbelievable 1.80 a pint, as well as the hearty grub and warm welcome.

A very nice friendly unspoilt thatched village pub on the main road through Sticklepath, almost opposite the National Trusts Finch Foundry.

There are four real ales available; Tribute, Doom Bar, Abbott and Bass, all at 2 a pint, and a good value for money food menu. I sat outside in the delightful little garden and enjoyed a sandwich washed down with a couple of excellent pints of Doom Bar.

It was definitely well worth the detour off the A30 both to visit the foundry and enjoy the beer and food in the River Taw Inn afterwards.

Visited 28/10/06, Saturday Lunchtime. Only a fleeting visit, would have liked more time there. Quite busy and menu looked good. A very satisfactory half of Doom Bar.

Probably the friendliest pub in the South West: all ages welcome, great pub grub and excelent beer. Paul, Sue and their staff make everyone welcome.

Fine selection of beers, stouts, lagers, wines and spirits.
Good home-cooked food with the friendliest of atmospheres created by Paul and Sue and all the regulars in Sticklepath and the surrounding villages.
Children welcomed.
