user reviews of the Fox and Duck, Petersham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visited on Saturday lunchtime to watch the England v Australia RU game on the big screen tv. Myself and a mate made very welcome by the staff and the regulars. Generally a warm, friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Easily accessible from Richmond and Kingston with stops for both the 371 and 65 buses close by. Thoroughly decent pub.

I went to this pub a couple of wks ago and thought it was a lovely and homely place to be. I ended up staying there longer than I was supposed to as the regulars and bar staff were such lovely and happy people, I saw there was a bar menu so as u would I ordered some food I had the fox and duck burger which was amazing and didn't wait long at all. They also have live bands every Saturday so I will DEFINITELY be going back 100%.

Having run away from the awful Dysart round the corner this was a lovely change. A proper pub. Friendly and welcoming. Dogs allowed.

Went there on a Sunday at noon time for a quick bite and drink with the family - sat outside. We ordered, it took ages for the food to arrive. Hamburger (Special Fox and Duck burger) was barely eatable... honestly the worst burger I have ever had anywhere! 6 quid for that? Ripoff. The other food did not arrive after 40 mins so we cancelled, got a refund without hassle and moved on.
To be fair, this is probably a decent pub for a beer and for sportsfans. But would I go there with a family for lunch again? Nope.... Sorry.

A friendly place that is always worth popping in when in the area and making a special trip to for some of the live bands they have on at weekends. Bands like Echoes (Pink Floyd) and Thin White Duke (David Bowie) bring in the crowds.

Now one of my favourite pubs in the area as being an ex local I know most people in there so of course I enjoy it more!

Looking at it objectively the pub is in a very accessible location due to being on the main road from Richmond to Kingston. Nice looking pub, with tables out front, a side bit and a small car park out back. Inside its a nice down to earth pub, populated by locals and people passing through. Very laid back and relaxed atmosphere and the bar staff are good natured, friendly and happy to serve. I have not eaten there, but what I have seen looks good!

They have comedy nights and live music nights regularly and its rammed when they happen. They get good talent in and its great fun. They have all the sports channels available on TVs and a large projector screen. Also they show football games in 3D whenever possible (not sure if I like it though!).

Thumbs up.

The beer is good, usual collection of lagers and ales, bar snacks and shorts etc. And as mentioned by someone else, this is one pub you NEVER get trouble in. I have never seen any aggro ever in this place. The staff and locals do not and would not tolerate it.

Petersham is the kind of picture-postcard London village that one imagines is populated solely by the uber-wealthy, so it was a bit of a surprise to find this very down-to-earth locals' boozer on the main road. The pub has a garden out the front, and inside is divided into two parts: a main bar and a side room off to the left with a dartboard and some games machines. Only one handpump, dispensing GK IPA on my visit. This is an OK pub, but not as good as its average rating suggests - I give it 5/10.

Reading the reviews concerning the Fox & Duck, I am very surprised in the way in which it has been slated by a minority few. But the majority have got the place spot on!! Its a great pub! Maybe not really a pub but a super place to socialise and chill out with friends. I have been there on many occasions, especially on Band nights as they are quality, second to none. There are not many pubs in this area or even further afield that have such great bands performing every saturday night. The bands range from Rock & Roll to Motown to Jazz, the list goes on and on. Atmosphere is always lively. Trouble?? Never!! Not tolerated by staff or by punters. If you are a sport fan of any kind, then they have 3 TV's, big screen too!! Always happy to show any game at any time. And when Premiership football games are on you can always expect a full house. They are one of few pubs that have both Sky Sports and Setanta Sports legally shown. They have a pool table which is only 1 a game, not many tables that cheap anymore, also a games machine and a dart board. The landlady is always looking for new and refreshing ideas to bring in new faces to the pub, from what i saw last week when i was there, they are in the process of re-decorating. It's a big improovement, looks great, thought i was in a different pub. Always clean and tidy. They also have a good range of lagers and beers with snacks always available. No food from what I have seen, but then again its not the largest of pubs to accomodate a dining area. Possibly a weekend kitchen through the warm summer weeks would be a great addition. I always make sure the Fox & Duck is high on my list of venues when I intend to go out for a drink, whether its for a quiet night or an evening of entertainment. Never leave disappointed.

This is a great pub! The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is great :)
They also have lots of live band nights with some great music!
Fully recommend.

This is a lovely pub. Friendly staff always welcoming, relaxed atmosphere and a great place to bring my children. They also have live music nights which are a lot of fun.

The Fox and Duck seems to be heading in the right direction. Not only is it the only pub to have Sky Sports and Setanta legally in the area, but it has started to have live bands every Saturday. There is a rumour of jam nights also starting soon. However, it doesn't serve food - and to be honest, it really isn't needed as the Dysart and the New Inn have an established and sucessful restaurant just around the corner. Currently, it is the cheapest pub in the area by over 20p for some pints and thankfully the quiz machine has been updated and pool table re-clothed. There is room for improvements, such as refurbishment but it is quite an old-fashioned pub with an open fire. Read a few comments below about the staff, I have never had any problems with them - they are always friendly and down-to-earth towards me.

the fox and duck is not a great pub! the bar staff are friendly ish and theres football on most the time. they have 1 pool table witch is good but the megatouch machine is normal out of order or off. there is a open fire for in the winter thats great if someone gets around to lighting it! its quite often very cold in the winter we were all sitting there in coats. theres a heated smoking area outside. the foods not brilliant and they don't get too many orders! its kid friendly but their not aloud to play darts or sit at the bar, or play pool if your under 16 but nobody listens to that rule. the pub is normally dead if there isnt a match on.
little_monster - 17 Jan 2009 13:51
This pub used to be ok a couple of years back and was actually quite lively. Nowdays however, even though the owners are friendly the pub is completely dead. I met a mate in there for 1 drink the other week and we were literally the only 2 people in there. Even the barman disapeared. The only person your likely to see in there is a portly gentleman who has a burger van parked out back sitting at the bar occasionally breaking wind.....avoid! ! ! !

Locals pub on the main road between Richmond and Kingston, close to the Ham Gate entrance to Richmond Park. Its a pleasant enough pub in a slightly old fashioned basic sort of way. Not a great pub for real ale drinkers - a solitary handpump serves Bombardier at 2.70p - and I was virtually the only customer drinking it.

Used to do Thai Food a number of years ago, but has changed hands since.

No sign of any chavs yesterday ( Sunday ) during my lunchtime visit
JohnBonser - 17 Mar 2008 13:41
over run by chavs!

Being a local i have visited this pub a few times in the past, but due to the demise of the Hand and Flower this has become my hometown drinking den. Overall a decent enough pub, good selection of beers and good bar staff that actually remember your last round! Definitely a locals pub due to the location, but always friendly. Idiots are not tolerated so never any trouble!

They show all the premiership games and have a bigscreen available.
khisanth - 5 Nov 2007 13:04
Had excellent restaurant-quality meal a couple of evenings ago. Although at 45 for two, you would certainly expect something well beyond regular (gastro)pub fare.

On the downside, the restaurant was devoid of atmosphere, with a sprinkling of diners. However, it was mid-week, and doubtless things pick up towards weekend.

Overall, the pub is a mismatch of leftover customers from the Hand & Flower days, and others looking for an upscale pub experience. Pub style/theme is also a challenging - cricketing paraphernalia meets faux Louise XIV, with a fabulous inglenook log-fire as the centrepiece. Weird!

anonymous - 2 Nov 2007 12:21
It is the only pub in the area to still show all the live sporting events - including the Premiership - all on a big screen, so sometimes the pub can get a little busy on a Sunday afternoon
anonymous - 30 Jun 2007 18:05
Have been to the pub on a number of occasions. It has made a vast improvement since a few years ago. Staff and customers are friendly and there is a good mix of youngsters and older people. It is quite a local pub with most people knowing one another. Food is typical pub food and the drinks are the cheapest in the area. The pub has had a few live band nights which have been extremely popular - they should focus on this more - and more disco nights. Not sure what happened to karaoke, but the owners should consider bringing that back. Other than that, the music is very, very good but the inside might need to be refurbished next year.
TonyBarnes - 30 Jun 2007 17:58
Reminiscent of the kind of pubs used as waypoints for the old Charabancs.

Looking a little run down. Pool table in a fair-sized bar.

Benches out front, but very noisy with the proximity to the road.

Bar food with jackets and sandwiches along with main meals.

Friendly enough service in the daytime on this visit.

Bombardier nice enough but then noticed the plankton floating at the bottom of glass

Surprised that no one has commented on this pub since my last posting below. It's an unpretentious pub with a slightly old fashioned feel, mainly used by locals seemingly, on the main road between Richmond and Kingston. The fact that it is in neither of the town centres means that it presumably doesn't get the Friday / Saturday night pyschos. The pub is not a real ale stronghold - there was only a single handpump serving a well kept pint of Wells Bombardier at a very reasonable 2.55p on my visit last Sunday. The pub is on the 65 bus route between Richmond and Kingston and the stop is virtually opposite the pub if coming from Kingston.

Not worth going out of your way to find, but worth occasionally getting off the 65 bus for a quick pint for a change from the better known watering holes round this neck of the woods.
JohnBonser - 10 Apr 2007 14:36
Not so apparently, Matthew, its still open proudly advertising itself as "under new management" and seemingly doing quite well, if my visit last Sunday was typical.

The Thai food operation seems to have gone - but then this always seems to happen when management changes.
JohnBonser - 24 Mar 2006 13:33
Another pub that is expected to close soon.
Matthew_of_Ham - 15 Dec 2005 19:42
Good Sunday lunches in a pub on the Richmond to Kingston road. Not pretentious unlike so many places in the area!
beeronaut - 19 Sep 2005 22:41

NEICEY - 29 Apr 2005 09:14
Nice Friendly pub, great for watching sports on the big screen and they do a wicked sunday lunch
Tes - 4 Nov 2004 21:12
We go there once or twice a week throughout spring, summer and autumn (post sport watering hole). Bar staff are friendly, the beer is cold (but not cheap) and bar snacks/food is decent. There's even a TV and pool table if you need entertaining.
Atz - 1 Mar 2004 14:12
Better than the Dysart. At least it's not uncommon to see a group of labourers drinking outside in the summer:
Good for: daytime refreshment
