Thomson's Bar is a small single-bar pub that had a nice traditional interior, typical of many Edinburgh pubs. It had a good selection of ales too - Oakham Green Devil IPA, Alechemy Five Sisters Pale Ale, Orkney Scapa Special, Strathbraan Due South, Caledonian Deuchars IPA & Fyne Jarl. Agree that staff were friendly. Another good pub within easy walk of the station.

Called in here on Saturday 14th March as part of a day out to Edinburgh from Cheshire - our second such visit in 5 months. Navigated using the Good Beer Guide and found Thomson's.
Good range of ales, had a very nice pint of Anarchy Blonde Star (3.9%). I like the layout as it's one moderately sized room, with lots of people in creating a good atmosphere. A friendly hello from the staff when we arrived, and an equally friendly goodbye as we said thanks and left for our next pub stop. Put this on your list of pubs to visit in Edinburgh.

Popped in last Monday on the way back to Haymarket from The Hanging Bat. I had a pint of the Alechemy Citra Burst- a bit steep at £3.95 but very nice. I'll always call in here when in Edinburgh.

A lovely interior and a simple layout make this pub a place to enjoy a pint of their - usually of the pale hoppy variety - beers. The Dark Star APA was on very good form, as was the Oakham Citra.

This is one of the best bars you'll ever visit. The staff (some, mainly male) are able to Multi-task and deal with more than one customer at a time! They are knowledgeable, polite and above all totally focused on serving you, the customer. One room bar, pretty busy, lots of real ale choices. Just up the road from Chop Chop and other good eateries in Dalry Road. WiFi iffy, but what the hell? In my top 5 in Scotland.

Everything a pub should be and have. Wide range of real ale to suit all tastes ranging from session to heavy duty beers. Beautifully decorated with vintage posters. Expert, welcoming staff. Perfect pies.

After a short walk from Diggers we arrived at Thomson's which even thought they didn't officially open until noon they let us wait inside while they opened properly.
Another good selection of scottish ales on (usual creamy variety), again the pint I had was good.
Nice 1 room pub with the bar to the right as you enter.
Very knowledge bar maid who we spent 15 minutes or so talking with about beer and the British Beer Guide.
Was empty apart from a family that arrived just before we left.
Worth a look as this is a decent pub

This is a top-notch boozer with a selection of beers from either the handpumps or the traditional Scottish font. I had several pints of Fyne Ales "Jarl" which is a fantastic beer. This was quickly followed by their "Avalanche" - again superb. The bar is a single room with "Greek" influenced decor; loads of old brewery and whisky mirrors and bric-a-brac and a great mix of clientele. It was also very handy (a bit too handy at times) for our hotel down the road (Premier Inn) and it is a short walk from Haymarket station. Very highly recommended.

Visited on Saturday 26 Nov 2011. Went in the morning as first stop on pub crawl before and after fitba at Tynecastle. So good that we stayed all morning and returned for post-match happiness. Everything about this pub is first class. Beer, interior, staff, customers, seating all 10 out 0f 10. One word of warning, they don't open on Saturday till 12:00 although the notice showing licencing hours shows 11:00. Well worth the wait though. And the steak pie is trully awesome.

Great little pub with well kept panelling, mirrors and old posters of brews present and long gone. Staff were very friendly and the beers, mainly from Scottish micros, very well kept. Handy for a pint or three prior to trying Chop Chop Chinese restaurant experience a little way down th road....!
|
Great one roomed city pub. Minimal food, which I prefer to those all-singing all-dancing all-frozen menus. Friendly staff. Great place to sit and read the paper or have chat during the day. I imagine it is a different creature by night.
|
Very good city pub, efficient bar staff, nice plain interior with brewery and distillery ephemera on the walls. Plenty of ale choice, mostly local Scottish beers. Excellent steak pie too. Clearly popular with local office staff at lunchtime. Well worth a walk from the central tourist area, a haven at festival time.

Popped in on a Friday evening and the place was packed with drinkers spilling out onto the pavement outside. Seven ales on offer from a wide geographical area (including locals). Friendly clientele despite being jammed with after both work drinkers and early evening revellers.
|
Late comment from August. Enjoyed a Kelburn beer on this visit.
|
Reasonable selection of beer, quiet clientele (though no-one under 60), lots of newspapers and several satisfied drinkers. Didn't try the food btu will do next time I'm passing.
|
A real gem! As mentioned in previous reviews, 8 real ales to choose from and, on my recent visit, Dark Star Hophead was on offer and in excellent form. The ambience of the place is warm and relaxed with a good mix of clientele. Definitely worth a visit when in town.
Cheers!

Pretty quiet when we called in....pity my brother hadn't read the step notice!!
8 real ales to chose from

Hadnt been in here for a few years and was impressed with the changes made. Bright and airy with plenty of choice from a full range of real ales and single malts. The "mind the step" notice is on the wrong side of the toilet door however and I for one tripped up on a couple of occasions when exiting the Gents. Be warned.

Place is ace for a quiet pint. Always pretty busy when I've been in but no bother getting served.
Kind of place you can take your girl.
Ale is top notch.
|
Went in there on a Saturday night and was pretty impressed by the unusual interior, and more than happy with the Real Ales on tap.
As mentioned in a previous post, drinkers are of the red-faced variety, but a friendly (if somewaht noisy) atmosphere prevails.
If you're staying on the west side of town, definately pop in here for a pint or three.
|
Excellent ale quality and range. Excellent bars staff but the drinks are expensive. It is an excellent pub though - another case of "you get what you pay for".
|
An excellent home from home and a superlative range of cask ales kept to a high standard by the bar manager, Lee.
|
A very nice proper pub, full of seemingly red faced proper drinkers.
|
Home of THE perfect pint. Handy for Murrayfield as all the crowds getting off at Haymarket BR miss it. Cracking Scotch Pies in the wee bakery opposite (which is sadly closed on Sundays even if there's a game on).

Odd Greek style to this pub but as Edinburgh's pub of the year last year it certainly is a good pint
|
Edinburgh CAMRA Pub of the Year for 2003 and just a few minutes walk from the Edinburgh International Conference Centre so was very handy for a couple of pints after a hard day trying to stay awake. One tip, turn right out of EICC to find it, if you turn left you'll end up at the awful Festival Tavern.
