Had Sunday lunch there yesterday after a lovely walk in Ashdown Forest. Small but friendly bar & staff which was busy but not noisy. Had a decent pint sitting outside in the November sunshine then we all (4) has Sunday lunch inside. Food was excellent, very tasty and served with a nice selection of fresh vegetables. Deserts were homemade and yummy. Would definitely return.

Called in here today for lunch, having seen the sign on the main road. The interior is tired and not particularly welcoming. The staff were friendly though. The menu appears extensive and varied but it's a shame the quality of the food did not live up to expectations. Stale bun, burger appeared to have been bought from a cheap supermarket and a dry steak. Only had one lager so can't comment on the ales. Will not be visiting again.

It's an attractive pub, in front of a charming village green, and pleasantly off the beaten track. But it's quite plain inside and slightly devoid of character. The bar staff are friendly, but struggled a bit during busy periods. The food is average, although the menu seemed to promise more. Lovely spot for a beer on a summer's day out the front (and probably the back too); good selection of beers. But on the whole slightly disappointing, sorry to say.

Still one of my favourite pubs, good for an evening out or a quick drink whilst passing through Ashdown Forest. Friendly staff and locals always make it a worthwhile visit, with good pub food. Badger ales are well kept, and the seasonal Hopping Hare (sadly finished for this year) is well worth a try

Nice pub - friendly service, well kept Badger ales and good, well-priced food. What more could you ask for?

My views stated in January still stand having visited again yesterday. Driving unfortunately so unable to sample any of the Badger Ales on offer. Once again went for the Steak and Mushroom pudding, lovely stuff and didn't really feel the urge to eat anything else until this morning.
Well worth a visit if you are walking on the Forest, or even if you aren't!

Traditional village pub on the edge of Ashdown Forest, albeit one with most of the tables set up for eating rather than drinking. Not usually a fan of Badger Beers, but the Hopping Hare was nice enough.

Traditional English pub. Good service from friendly staff, and food exactly what you would expect from such an establishment. Recommended

Used to go here regularly 10 years or so back in the days when it was a King & Barnes house (RIP). Good food and ale was always assured and it was always busy despite being a little off the beaten track.
Visited this lunchtime - the first visit in several years. Found friendly attentive staff and excellent food. I love meat puddings but don't do kidney so when I saw Steak ale and mushroom pud on the menu there was no other option. Large, tasty and with a good serving of proper veg it kept me going for the rest of the day. Driving so unable to sample the ales (now from Hall and Woodhouse). Also do small (yet still quite generous) portions of some meals for those less hungry than I!

Well kept Hall & Woodhouse ales let down by the food, which was overpriced and badly cooked. The portions were small; the fish was swimming in oil with hardly any beer batter, and you could count the chips on your hands! The atmosphere for a Saturday lunchtime was rowdy, more like closing time in a back street boozer made worse by the slow and indifferent service. Will not be back in a hurry.

A very pleasant and unspoiled country pub. Small, with heavy emphasis on home prepared food of good value and quality. Very helpful bar staff and serving 2 real ales - was a King and Barnes tied house in years gone by it appears. Loads of good walking in Ashdown Forest make this an ideal stop for lunch.

A typical country pub with lots of atmosphere and friendly service, been voted the best pub in sussex by Southern FM radio and The Friday Ad, serves good food and ales, has a large garden and patio area, dogs most welcome ideal for walkers.
|
Friendly, authentic pub serving above average food with polite if not polished service. Great to finish up there after a long walk with the dog on the Ashdown Forest

Lovely country pub. Great food and good real ales. Really cosy in the winter and nice garden for summer. Staff and owners friendly, would go back again.
