user reviews of the Flower Pot, Walthamstow

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I visited the place for the first time last night - the live music was the reason I was there. I thought it was a nice old fashioned boozer - I like like pubs to be like PUBS not some trendy bar. This place is a bit shabby but has plenty of character - like pubs used to be. So many pubs at the moment are being ruined by bland refurbs which remove their old charm and character so it's nice to find one that hasn't been ruined yet.

The locals and regulars seemed OK and the bar staff were well on the ball - I always got served quickly and they remembered what I was drinking. It was disappointing on the real ale front though: Two of the four pumps weren't in use - including the Bass which this pub seems best known for. No IPA either, so I was left with a choice of Spitfire or Doombar. I went for the Spitfire as the least worst option - I would have preferred something stronger. The Spitfire wasn't up to much but was OK - I have never been impressed with this ale anyway - rather over-rated in my opinion. It was a very reasonable £3.60 a pint so no complaints about the prices. The Spitfire ran out towards the end of the evening leaving only the Doombar on tap from the four real ale pumps - not impressive or likely to encourage me to go back although the live music might tempt me.

Overall I quite liked the character of the pub, but the ales were a let-down and a lot more effort could have been made in that department.

After a swift half in the Waltham Forest Corporation Sports & Social Club, I rounded off my East London crawl in the Flower Pot. Live music was on offer yesterday evening. That's not normally my cup of tea. Doom Bar & Bass were the real ales. The pub itself is quite pleasant, with a central bar and drinking are on 3 sides, in addition to an outdoor area to the side of the pub. Friendly service. But a bit too noisy for my liking.

A bit of a dive. Unfriendly staff, dark, miserable/oppressive atmosphere, poorly kept ales. Try some of the many other pubs in the neighbourhood - Coach and Horses, Village, and Nags Head are good, so Is the Goose opposite the station. Don't even go in to use the toilet
pablondon - 8 Jul 2012 19:35
Beer not well kept and children running amok.
ericthered - 11 Feb 2011 15:15

tomfolowerpot - 20 Nov 2010 19:03
Shocked to learn that this establishment may have been linked to the NF / BNP. There is a lttle feeling of foreboding when you first visit. Dark somewhat gloomy feeling interior, friendlier vibe than other pubs in the area, draught lager and ales are very good, reasonable prices. Another Pub supporting rock /pop combo's at weekends which again reflects it's more aged regular custom. Great for football, with a main screen and several tv's positioned around the place so you won't miss any of the action, a very popular midweek quiz, and a tidy beer garden that accomodates a fair few of us smokers. Friendly, helpful young barman, and the same goes to the woman who appears to be the 'landlady'.
Can possibly do with a little updating 're-furb', and some younger (female) customers would probably breathe a little more life into the place.
barflysprings474 - 27 Apr 2010 14:21
Is this still an NF/BNP pub?
mineisalandlord - 24 Mar 2010 13:03
The flower pot was a great pub many moons ago meaning the days of stan and ada running it. In them days beer was good the people were regulars who drank in there everyday and who were great charatcers. From what i have read if the characters i knew of were still in there most of you would have got thrown threw the wooden doors with a right clip round the ear. But times change people leave new ones arrive and landlords with no backbone let pubs go downhill so if its now rubbish and the beer is crank balme the landlord not the people who drink in there.
JOZIE1 - 2 Jan 2010 13:28
Poped in the other day as I haven't being in the place for ages, is a shame that the place seams to be runed by the little kid, the place is a mess dull and dirty, I'll have to forget this experience to go back again.... if I ever will.
tita - 18 Nov 2009 18:08
The other pub it advertises is a sister pub, they do a lot of live music and bands in the flower pot, every weekend
Mollymoon - 23 Nov 2008 22:08
Great pub. My first time last week and brought all my friends this weekend for The Capris live band on Saturday. Great atmosphere and great beer.
alzheimers - 5 Nov 2008 14:05
First time in here on Friday and saw 'Stupid Cupid'. I didn't stay long. Must admit bit of a strange place, seemed friendly enough but advertised another pub down the road? Sink was hanging off the wall in the gents and the Fosters tasted pretty rank.

Could do with a clean-up.

Music_Maestro - 3 Nov 2008 18:13
fantastic barstaff, great little venue for music and friendly regulars. what more can i say..
vetnurse118 - 22 Oct 2008 21:34
I tried to get on on a Sunday night but the loud rock band made it impossible,
martynd - 25 Aug 2008 08:36
rogerthedodger...hmmm, i wonder if this would be the same roger who runs 2 pubs in walthamstow and was barred from here for having a go at 2 barmaids??? If not you, then I apologise - if it is you, SHAME ON YOU!!!

Its not full of alcoholics - some people get confused - its full of people who actually have a good time. Its frequented by regulars who don't seem to get hammered every time, they just like the atmos and enjoy themselves. that is, after all, what pubs are all about really. this pub does seem to be getting bad press from rival boozers so please don't take whats being said as gospel - i am not biased to this pub - I sing here with my band and used to drink here when i was local. Just telling it how it is.
tombsie - 27 Apr 2008 20:03
Dreadful place full of losers and alcoholics. Had a pint of bitter which was not great. A fight strated brewing so I left.
rogerthedodger - 20 Apr 2008 15:34
visited the flower pot for the first time on friday and saturday and sunday as i have just moved into the area. definitely the best pub in wood street. St patricks day looks like being good. free irish grub musice and dancers. whey hey
alzheimers - 10 Mar 2008 16:21
by the way teg, have you not noticed there are already 2 coral bookies in wood street? i think the flower pot can rest easy on that one.
tombsie - 24 Feb 2008 17:58
hear hear offthewagon. the fight in the pub you mention was caused because of a lot of strangers in there who looked up for a fight from the start of the night. This is a regulars pub who know how to have a good time. its not about the place, its about the people. you put those who wanna fight into a 5 star hotel in mayfair and they would still kick off. take away the saddos who just want to fight and hey presto, the pub is back to a nice boozer with a good fun crowd. If you have not been to either this or the dukes head, your best bet is to go down and visit both and make your own decision.
tombsie - 24 Feb 2008 17:56
best boozer in wood st, bar staff really friendly and entertainment is great.
elliesse - 12 Feb 2008 22:50
The best thing to do is closed down the flower pot. Turn it into a coral's betting shop, then you won't have no trouble in there, like 2 weeks ago.
teg - 11 Feb 2008 22:48
The problem with this pub is that although it serves quite good real ale, all and sundry are allowed in despite off putting behaviour. It appears that people drift in from The Dukes Head having had too much and start trouble with people who have been sitting all night having a quiet pint. There was all sorts of trouble recently with Police attending etc. I do not know why the Manager allows these idiots in. On the whole could be nice but the losers and dregs from next door must be banned from entering please.
offthewagon07 - 11 Feb 2008 14:31
one word for you MUPPET.Go join the others in the flower pot.
teg - 10 Feb 2008 23:35
offthewagon is a bit harsh. place is not full of losers at all. nice warm atmos in here. lots of live music, live sport, decent beer. u want losers, go to the duke next door. ugh.
tombsie - 29 Dec 2007 15:40
Great pub to watch the footy in. Service is always friendly and quick. A locals local but no problem if you arent - just dont expect to meet the love of your life in there.
Magpie - 13 Dec 2007 12:17
Beer ok but place is full of losers and dregs.
offthewagon07 - 8 Dec 2007 11:50
Great friendly boozer, great music, no trouble just good beer and genuine people.
steviewonder - 27 Nov 2007 21:37
I shall really have to go to the Nags head, it can't be as bad as everyone says !!! The flower pot is great for live entertainment, the elvis tribute is great. They also have Karaoke once a month.
Mollymoon - 8 Oct 2007 21:38
Friendly, great music lively full of real characters, child friendly beer garden !! Everything a pub should be, unlike the Nags Head a few hundered yars up the road.
SteveEast17 - 9 Jul 2007 23:32
Great pub, great music, great people, great beer, great place.
anonymous - 2 Jun 2007 18:03
Great pub, great people and atmosphere.
I will go again.
anonymous - 22 May 2007 11:43
Agreed. Great place, good music and very friendly. Its def on my list to return soon.

anonymous - 19 May 2007 15:25
I agree with the previous comment. This pub has a very country and friendly feel about it .... very welcoming.
anonymous - 11 May 2007 12:20
Great, friendly pub. Music is excellent, i dont agree at all with the previous review. Top quality bands that are impressive and varied. Generally revolves around 60's & 70's music era & is very authentic against the original artists. Def a place i'll return to.
Strawberry - 19 Apr 2007 13:31
The guest ale(s) here never quite match up to the better house beer BASS , especially in the hot summer of '06 when they turned to vinegar...
Live bands tend to be the 'same old same old' week in , week out - OK if you like your glorified karaoke for free , I suppose
focus - 7 Apr 2007 10:46
Contender for best pub in Waltamstow. A really traditional old-school place that feels like a country pub.
Greshon - 16 Feb 2007 09:29
Had another great evening in this pub. The bands are top quality, and the people are sooooo friendly. I made lots of new friends, and will go down there again soon. There are not many places where you get to hear top quality acts for no entrance fee at all.
Strawberry - 29 Jan 2007 13:35
Great to find a pub that has live music and serves decent beer (the Bass is well kept). When there isn't a sports match or band playing the jukebox is on.
Ginger_Beard - 17 Jan 2007 10:46
A happy, fun pub that specialises in live music, using the best quality talented musicians on the circuit. The music is mainly 60's & 70's. The Flower Pot has a wide age range & is exceptionally friendly.
Well worth trying it out.
anonymous - 16 Jan 2007 17:43
Had a great night in this pub. Its a typical East End pub atmosphere. The people and bar staff are friendly, and everyone mingles with everyone. The band was top quality, and the evening was based around 60's 70's & 80's music. A fun place to go and meet lots of new people and make friends. They have lots of parties, discos, live entertainment every week, and i would most definitely go there again very soon.
Strawberry - 13 Jan 2007 14:29
Great music venue - sorry, have to plug my own band here, The Capris are back at The Flower Pot on Jan 26th from 9pm - 70s rock, motown, 60s cool and contemporary fat music played!

This pub is superb for music as they do not charge as a rule (theme night gigs may carry a small charge) - come support live music in your community!!!
tombsie - 9 Jan 2007 16:21
Seemed an ok pub to be in. Would like to come here again on a lively music night. Drink was good and staff friendly. Solid place.
paulofchigwell - 1 Jan 2007 20:01
Just spent Xmas Eve at the Pot - what a top atmosphere. Good company, great live music from The Oscroft Brothers and no better way I can think of to spend the Xmas period.

tombsie - 28 Dec 2006 09:02
Glad to hear its back to just Bass, which used to be fantastic and have a decent thru'put when I went a few years ago - very traditional (if open plan)
mtaylor40 - 3 Sep 2006 22:52
THE CAPRIS have their first gig at The Flower Pot on Friday 8th September 2006 - 70s influenced pop-rock from artists such as The Beatles, Stones, Who, Hendrix, Monkees, Bowie, Iggy Pop, Stewart, and some cheeky surprises too.

This boozer is great for live bands and duos and music enthusiasts need to come down and experience acts such as THE OVERTURES, THE BEATNIKS, ASH, DREAM CIRCLE, DONUT, etc etc who never fail to impress and make this pub a great music venue of East London.
anonymous - 16 Aug 2006 08:45
Best boozer in Walthamstow by a mile. Friendly people all round. Great live sport and superb live music here fridays and saturdays. Also have music most Sunday afternoons.

Well done all!!!
anonymous - 9 Jul 2006 16:48
Popped in for a quick pint whilst in the area - seems a decent enough traditional local community boozer. Nothing to note architecturally but friendly and welcoming atmosphere and good service. Beer range was a bit limited (just 1 ale - Bass). Decent Plasma screens for sport. Certainly one of the better pubs in the area from what I have seen.
RogerB - 24 Jun 2006 08:50
WENT TO WATCH THE ARSENAL FINAL AGAINST BARCELONA. FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE. FREE ROAST POTATOES AND CHICKEN. GREAT BAR STAFF
ANDREW SHERIDAN - 25 May 2006 11:20
Strange pub, you feel like you're in someone elses living room, good beer though.
anonymous - 15 May 2006 22:50
Best pub in the area by a mile - if you like the following:

Good beer, very friendly locals, friendly bar staff and management, live music (not just same old covers bands but jazz, tributes, duo's, etc etc), live footy on various screens in the pub including a roll down big screen, theme nights based on times of the year - ie St patricks night, Burns night etc - and maybe best of all, the general feeling that you are in a proper pub - the day this boozer gets taken over by a Wetherspoons or another chain pub is the day it will no longer be great.

As you can see, I cannot rate it highly enough!
anonymous - 18 Mar 2006 18:06
Splendid traditional boozer with good beer, friendly locals & all sorts of stuff going on (quizzes, bands etc). Heard disturbing rumours of an imminent refurb last time I was in; hope they don't spoil it.
E17Bee - 5 Oct 2005 18:39
the atmosphere is brilliant, a great local place to have a pint, the entertainment is excellent and Anne and Tony are the best Land Lord/Lady around(i love you guys to bits!). the people are easy to talk to and football coverage is great!
a top night out for anyone! Rebecca xXx
rebecca - [email protected] - 17 Aug 2004 10:58
good atmos for the footy - this place is great if you fancy a pint in a proper pub, its quite dark and smoky at times but high ceilings and plenty of telly's plus the live music make it a yes for me.
Matt - 3 Jul 2004 18:20
Bar retains many original features and has some greta old mirrors as well as interesting bric-a-brac. Mostly there are two or three beers on here - the Bass is always good and there are guests like Youngs Special. Live music Fridays and Saturdays make this a rare treat and theres a quiz every Sunday.
danny - 15 Feb 2004 23:51
quiet friendly local close to Wood Street railway station, shame only one ale available (Bass) instead of 3 as expected, the kind of place you can sit in peace and mind your own business.
