I see that S Fowler & Co was recently voted the runner up in the Isle of Wight CAMRA pub of the year. But I thought it was a distinctly below average Wetherspoons. The location at the top of a street looking down towards the pier is nice. The interior has at least 2 floors, with a family/dining area upstairs. There were stairs going further. But I didn't venture any higher. The ale choice was disappointing - Sharps Doom Bar, Greene King IPA & Abbot, Adnams Broadside, Wickwar BOB, Goddards Fuggle Dee-Dum & Courage Directors. There were no dark ales and no real cider. It was fairly busy on our Good Friday morning visit though and it had a lively atmosphere. Breakfast was also fine. I think there are several better pubs on the island though.

At last a rewarding visit to this wetherspoons. The beer during their beer fest was on good form and there was a distinct lack of the usual element.

Conveniently located Wetherspoons, bus stop outside to deliver all the dole queue scroungers / drunks / smelly old men for their 8am pint of Guinness. Good selection of real ales which are well kept, good food, sadly the usual dubious selection of clientele but overall I would be happy to take the family here unlike a couple of other establishments in the locality.

As most comments say, a wetherspoons.
Ruddles at £1.99 and well kept. Usual Xmas ales on ie: 5% plus yuck
Those that like wetherspoons, worth a visit. Those against it, avoid

A typical spoons pub you know what to expect worth a visit though

Walked up the hill, discovered it was a Wankerspoons, looked through the window, usual selection of wasters and derilicts drinking cheap booze, walked back down the hill. No thanks.
|
A typical Wetherspoons, but is an expensive one since the same chain charge 50-60p per pint cheaper in Portsmouth.
|
It's a Wetherspoon pub... you have been to one you have been to them all.
Plenty of better choices on the Island for the more intrepid drinker.
|
Busy and friendly Wetherspoons. Enthusiastic young bar staff. Brilliant selction of ales duing the beer fest. Usual food, but very well prepared and presented. Excellent steak. Well done all round.

Was very hot and stuffy when we visited a couple of months back and the ale selection was rather lacking in inspiration bearing in mind it's location,6.5/10
|
Ok 'Spoons, although I called in on a midweek afternoon so can't vouch for it at weekends or evenings.

Looks nice outside, typical JDW inside with the usual suspects drinking the cheap beer and food on offer. Fair enough pub, almost worth the walk up the hill from the hover/ferry terminals.
|
We have been twice in the past 2 weeks and walked out both times as the choice of beers was predictable and boring. Start looking at LOCale guys.
|
As you'd expect. Same furniture as the Wetherspoons in Penzance, maybe even some of the same old chaps boozing. Range of ale was good however, the reason I gave the place a few points.
|
Pleasant enough place, large and spacious and was very busy when we visited though there was rugby on the box which probably helped. Good range of beers to be had including a very tasty smoked porter whose name escapes me....it was beer number 7 of the day though. Fairly cavernous and clean bogs too, always a bonus.
|
A good range of ales, the one I had was in good condition. Gets very busy with on Friday/Saturday evenings but quite comfortable (for a 'Spoons!) at other times. Typically the upstairs family area doesn't get the glass collecting and table clearing/wiping that it should.
|
A typical McSpoons pub, cavernous and souless but with a suprisngly good range of ales. Tried a Titanic beer which was very good.
|
sad to say this has to be the worst one ive visited of 3/4 of the spoons ive been in..though to be fair to the present management it was a year after it opened..beer was poor and so was the service..probably improved immensley since my last visit but i can still taste the goddards that was sour..put me off.

Despite the last few reviews ended up visiting this pub twice over the weekend. Lunch time to watch the rugby and then again in the evening. Service was fine both times and the staff very friendly. Pedigree was reasonable as was the Guiness. Quite lively despite the time of year but a good atmosphere and no trouble. Don't know if the staff have changed from last year but I would recommend it.

Sorry to say after my last posting i approached the manageress to complain about the service dirtiness etc and now i'm barred from using the pub so i phoned witherspoons direct and they were not in the least concerned so witherspoons if this is your policy i hope you sink into a bottomless pit -----i'll never drink in one of your pubs again.

crap pub 20 minutes to get a drink surly landlady not allowed to take drinks outside restaurant filthy more suited to a toilet than a pub.

Signage for Family area is confusing - got moved from non-smoking area to upstairs.
Didn't actually eat or drink in here because it took 3 trips to bar to be continually told that our choice of food was not available.
Final straw was spotty kid (manager?) who came up and said "we ain't got nothing".
Despite the double negative I assumed they could not serve us so we found a nicer place down the road.

A "spoons" now 0900 for beer 7 days can't wait for next years Scooter Rally. You know what you are going to get here, good value for money and the early one!
|
Breakfast and a beer at 10am!
|
Food is typical Wetherspoons, good value, fast turnover. Have visited many times and food has always been of good standard. Non smokers have to eat upstairs to avoid lungs being filled with smoke.
|
Good Wetherspoons grub and good cheap beer.
