please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Reasonably nice pub with a selection of real ales at the southern end of the High Street in Cowes. It's clearly an old pub with low beamed ceilings. There are a couple of rooms inside and a courtyard at the rear. Seemed to be popular with diners and the tourist trade. Ales were Goddards Fuggle Dee-Dum, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Fullers London Pride, Sharps Doom Bar & Theakston Lightfoot. Moved on from here to the Rum Bar (formerly Bertie's) a bit further up the High Street, where you'll find some more unusual ales. It's not listed on the site.

On the reccomendation of the Good Beer Guide we visited The Anchor but the most I could say about it was "alright". The beer range is pretty standard so I had the Goddards which again was "alright". This is a large pub which has several drinking areas and an outside seating area at the back. The decor is "tired alehouse" and I think we were lucky as we got a seat and had no hassle but I would imagine it would be a bit more "in yer face" on weekend evenings. So overall - "been there done it" No need to go back.

Stayed the night here last week, dull beer selection other than a Goddards offering, accomodation was clean but tired, very overpriced at 55 quid a night and NO breakfast provided. Would not nother again.

My partner and i had a great time in the Anchor, sadly at about 2300hrs it got too busy, we decided to sit out-side on the front, It was quiet, until, a doorman approached and told me and told me i had to have a "plastic glass for my alcohol", i asked him if he "could get me a glass" to which his response was, "Im not your Servant" I questioned his Attitude,i handed my Drink to my partner and nipped into the Anchor pub {Cowes} to obtain a plastic Glass.Whilst i was inside the Pub the Dooman had Snatched my drink out of my Partners hand and threw it away, after about Ten Minutes he reappeared with two other colleagues, i challenged his behaviour, this was greeted with move on, get off the Anchor Property, i replied "no, now call the Police", i also asked for his ID Number,{to which he said"NO"} as i am wanting to file a complaint, i am being called an idiot, i believe their tactics was to push me into an uncontrollable and foul mouthed state, the Police arrived, they done what they could do, i did have my moment, by expressing my views of this being so unfair, that a dooman can tell you to go and get a plastic glass and whilst you are doing that, he takes your drink and throws it away.Sadly the Anchor is a pub i will never set foot into again. The Bar Staff are nice and friendly, The Atmosphere is Ok"ish" The Doorman-nasty person, The other two Doormen, well they had to back his colleague up, right or wrong!!

A kind of okay town pub, okay in the fact of it being on a touristy High St. They had five ales on, which sounds impressive but was a choice of Pride, Ringwood, Goddards Fuddle de whatever and two "guest" ales in the guise of Youngs and GK IPA. If you go for the Goddards stuff (as most people looking to try something local would) you would be disappointed in what was served up here and put it down at best as an 'acquired' taste. Ignore the GBG - this ISN'T a pub to go for a decent pint of local ale.

So-so pub serving a nice (but expensive) pint of Fuggle-de-Dum. Worth a look if passing.

Visited on Saturday afternoon. World Cup football was on, with about 20 people watching it, otherwise it was fairly empty. It seemed OK but nothing special. Beer was in good condition but the only local beer was Goddard's Fuggle-de-Dum which IMO isn't really a summer beer, and at 4.8% is stronger than I like for afternoon drinking. For me personally it didn't seem a place I'd make much effort to return to, but I would revisit if passing.

I've visited several times. Usually a number of ales on - last time I stuck with the Islands own 'Fuggle Dee Dum' by Goddards. Good pint too. It generally is. The place wasn't particularly busy as I visited one Monday lunchtime. But I've walked past on a friday evening - people pouring out onto the street. Personally, I go for the quieter boozers, but lots of people outside is a sign of the places popularity. Not my bag though, especially when all those people are ignorant sailors, reluctant to make way for you as you struggle to get passed, on your way to 'The Union Inn' just down the road.
The interior is fine. I ate here last year. It was a curry which was nice. Service has always been polite and prompt however. All in all, not bad.

The Anchor was THE place to go in Cowes whether you were a native or a yachtie. However, its popularity has waned a little over the past year or so. In part this is because the Fountain has framed a bit better, partly because the Vectis isn't the Youth Club it once was, partly cos the Pier View isn't the Olympic Yachtie clique it once was, and partly because the Anchor has gone up in price and badly down hill in quality. The food is now pretty dire and the dearest pub grub in town. It hasn't helped the ambience that they've introduced a load of chairs from the Brewers Fayre pub in East Cowes which the owners bought last year. They stick out like a baboons ar*se amongst the otherwise traditional furniture and decor. Its still the best for live music though wi bands on wednesdays, fridays and saturdays.

Food here was lovely, eaten there twice and not been disappointed either time. Steak with fried onions is delicious but calimari salad is more salad and less calamari.

This is the locals pub of choice and has a good atmosphere almost all the time. Food is good. I would especially recommend nights when there is live music in the stables at the back, (often Weds, Fri and Sat). They have some good local bands on. Drinks are relatively cheap and bar staff always friendly.
