The last time I went in had a new land lord (South African?). Has Sports on the TV and beer is average price and quality,

probably suffers a bit from being on the edge of town but it ismy nearest pub so i thought i'd give a go for the first time in ages, quite suprised by two things - saturday night and only about 5 customers and the quality of the ale has improved considerably since my last visit, a decent guest beer policy might get me back sooner next tme

Should be better. Isn't.

It's Friday, 8 October 2010. It's also my birthday and The Ship Inn is our nearest pub which serves food.
We arrived at about 1.20 to be told the 'lady wot cooks' had just done two meals but had now gone down to the bank.
I could see a couple of people still eating their lunch, so it had obviously only just been served. Why on EARTH leave the pub and quit serving lunches when it was only half way through the lunchtime session?
Big disappointment.

Reasonably good beer and service. Bit of a locals pub although didn't seem that intimidating.

Was one of my locals when I lived in Bedford, still pop in there when I'm back there, Fairly descent local pub, has gone a bit down hill over the years, No real ale anymore, which considering they are about a mile from the charles wells brewery is a shame, the eagle smooth is ok, but not quite the real thing, could do with a new lease of life as the 2 other charles wells pubs in the area, the Bedford arms and the foresters have both been rufurbished recently.
|
Not the best Charles Wells pub, but one of the few places to get a decent pint on the north-west side of Bedford town centre.
|
A very smokey pub, could see the mist from the outside, not a place to go if you don't wanna ruin your lungs.
|
Served well kept Green King in a cool old pub. Excellent.

I regularly visit the Ship ad have experienced the service problems mentioned in the last comment. These seem to coincide with the landlords being away, nuff said!
Allways found the beer to be good quality. The Fri night karaoke (if that is your bag) is one of the best in the area.
Happy hour (5-7, mon-fri) is worth a visit. Most draughts 2 a pint and some good company.

more a warning than a recommendation, shame really as this is my closest pub! my first visit in some time, to find an almost empty pub, rather loud pop videos playing to no none in particular, unemptied ash trays, plates and cutlery left - presumably from lunch time and to top it all bar staff who were far more intersested in playing pool than serving any customers - i counted 3 of us in total, i hope to report back in a more positive vain the next time 1/10 for actually getting served !
