RIP The Kings Head. A thumping great gaff with such a variety of usable areas and decent car park. With great potential that should have been developed rather than redeveloped! My then "second" local (after The Sultan), the disposal of this was just the first inclination of the impending shabbiness of Young & Co. But there.
PS A year on from the last posted comment, so doubtful if anybody will ever read this but... for those of you that miss the heated "banter" between the bus drivers, I have seen a couple of them in The Sultan every so often. I daresay if you look in the Royal Standard you might get the odd tune out of them there. Not the Tup, though, and certainly not Baobab!

Drove past it the other day. The pub building is still there, it hasn't been knocked down. New windows, cleaned up brickwork and roof. You never know, one day it might turn back into the Kings Head Pub instead of offices for the bus garage next door.

Yes, I visited on Tuesday (7/7/04) and it was closed down. Not too good as I have never been inside myself and reading the comments below I really wanted to. Shame
|
The closing date isn't set but believed to be not too far off now.

Yet another rumour that this is being closed down for offices of London transport. Can anyone confirm? Ted Bundy perhaps? if he can manage to spell anything properly. I personally hope that it doesn't close down as it is always a pleasure to down a decent pint of youngs now and again!

A must for pub historians eager to experience first hand what most pubs were like back in the 70's. This is a museam piece and it's the sort of place Sid James in his "Bless This House" days would have had as his "local".
That's really the best reason to go here other than the usual reliable Youngs beers. You can also amuse yourself by observing the London Tranport staff from the bus garage next door and ponder as to whether they are having a pre or post work drink. (Post I hope.)
However Terry is right about this place being exceptional and it would be a real shame to see it close. The pub really does have potential and it's a crime for Youngs to waste it. This place could be great with a sensible refurb.

Tom is right, this pub does have huge potential. It's a real old style pub, with loads of room. If Youngs put some effort into it, it could be a brilliant pub. With so much housing being generated in the area there are going to be many more people looking for a good local night out.

such huge potential wasted, this could easily be the best pub for most localls if only it was invested in. i went in once, had one and left, a real shame. oh and ted 'clever' bundy, you may be a bit bonkers as you are the only one who saw any of dans 'slagging off' of other places. get help, and the courage to put a real name on a web site. girl.

This must have been a grand pub when it was new. Sadly the brewery (Youngs) has let it go to pot. Just as the Colliers Wood area is "Perking up a bit!!". Youngs is trying to close the pub down rather than refurbish it. Colliers Wood can now boast a Forte Hotel, a new Superstore shopping area with Currys etc. and a vast new flat complex at Abbey Mills, why do they have to close down this exceptional old pub when the beer trade in the area can only get better!!. The Function Room of the pub, (which has quite recently hosted Dave Kelly from the Blues Band and Terra Folk the popular band from Slovenia) is one of the nicest live music function rooms in the South of London, now gone forever....

below par and non descript for a Youngs pub. Grumpy barman. otherwise convenient for bus drivers

Not a bad booooozer really, got lots of history there, all u gotta do is ask an old bald fella called Terry, he will surely fill you in on what he knows!! Oh, DAN, stop slagging off all the other places in colliers Wood, its not their fault that theres only a few people who like your place... REHAB.... sorry I mean.. Gaz wots its name??

Oh no, yet another dodgy Colliers Wood boozer. How can one High Street feature so many? Can't the brewery scrape together a few quid to get rid of the dirty, 1970s velvet-style drapes, the sticky stained carpet and the tired seating? It's all so dingy you expect a jukebox full of Fields Of The Nephilim and the Mission but even that racket wouldn't clear away the cobwebs. And as for women... they haven't been in here since the Swingin' Sixties (the 1860s).
