Saw bloke who looked like a penguin bend down to pick up his cigar. The Shark kicked him up d’ole arse and whilst recovering Gallagher lit his cigar en route back to terra firma. Gold dust kept shouting out large one. Morkel then fingered Lottie at Leicester Sq tube.

Visited this pub as part of the monopoly pub crawl. We rocked up in the early afternoon and asked for out drinks. When the the young man behind the bar realised I was going to need 13 half pints he informed me the policy of the pub is not to serve large groups. He then poured the drinks away he had already pulled. A crazy policy which this pub and all the others on bow street had. (the only pubs we encountered this issue on) This shows the pubs are food focused and can afford to refuse service to people needing a small libation. The group of lads I was with could not be any more friendly, a terrible policy which I would like the landlord to explain. I concur with other reviewers, décor straight out of 'rent a pub' soulless with a transient clientele. I heartily recommend the lyceum on the strand for all people needing a drink in the area.

I likewise used to visit this pub in the 80s when it was a proper local boozer. Unfortunately Young's gave it one of their make-overs and turned it into a grim, noisy bar as opposed to a pub. I no longer recommend it.

I used to go to this pub a lot in the 1980s when I worked nearby. It used to be a classic Young's pub but like them all its had a number of makeovers, most of them for the worse. This one has high stools and high tables, which I hate. Normal Young's range and I drank the ordinary, which was in good condition. The prices were reasonable for the area. Pleasant enough place to stop for an afternoon pint but it gets packed in the evenings.
Popped into the Marquess yesterday for a quick half! Nice looking pub, on corner of Bow Street (..world famous for the 'cop shop' & court house!) Clean&tidy, plenty of windows to sit and watch London go by! A pint of ale and one G+T cost just over Ten Quid...!! Extortionate! So we went to The Chandos, 10 minutes walk away, and got 4 x drinks for same price. :o)
Ordinary pub. Had an okay single pint of Wells Bombardier. Exepnsive, but this pub is in Covent Garden tourist honey-pot. I don’t like sitting high up on a stool with no back support: why do pub interior designers like them so much? I suppose it keeps you above the waist level you’d be at in a crowded pub. To be positive: the serving staff were friendly and attentive, and the lavatories were clean.
I bought a cheese and pickle sarnie to go with my beer yesterday. Looked and tasted bland, lifeless and really cold, like it had just come from a packet out of a fridge!...And for the best part of 5 terrible value! What happened to your food, Youngs?
This pub has suffered from the usual Youngs Makeover, ie make a comfortable pub into an uncomfortable venue that wants to be a gastro pub. Youngs have lost the plot, they used to have great pubs, but now they are making them souless
To be honest I don't like the interior decor of this pub - I think it's cheap, tacky and over-reminiscent of the 1970's. We managed to get a table (late afternoon) but it does tend to get dreadfully busy with theatre-goers in the evening. The food is pretty standard pub grub and the beers were pretty nondescript as I recall (mind you, I'd had a fair few pints by this stage of our crawl!)
Typical West End pub. Zzzz
Usually full of theatre goers - nice pub, serves kirin ichiban (good beer in my opinion), Slightly on the expensive side - expect 2 pints and a packet of crisps to cost more than 10.
Rather over-refurbished Youngs pub of no particular interest decor-wise, located just far enough away from the heart of Covent Garden to avoid the worst of the crowds but still having a very transient feel. Four ales on handpump - Ordinary, London Gold, Special and Bombardier - but the prices are right at the top end (even for this expensive area). 'Bistro' dining area upstairs. Overall, not a bad pub, but distinctly unmemorable...
Very clean and tidy to the point of characterless. Young's beer. The one I wanted wasn't on. Didn't have the problems with rude staff which other reviewers encountered. An ok pub but there are much better in the area.
Visited here yesterday. Ordered a pint of Young's London Gold. It was not good. Returned it and told them it was a bad pint and the young barmaid said, that, 'Nobody else has complained', bad attitude. I used to like this pub, will not be going again.
Modern rather souless interior, tried a youngs gold. Didnt enjoy the pub or the beer. Wont be back.
I popped into this place for the first time last week. I am sure kendy, prefab and the others have accurately recorded their impressions so maybe I just hit a lucky day but I have to say that my experience did not tally with those in the most recent reviews. Bit short of light for those of us who like to get stuck into the crossword but otherwise doing well. Staff OK, pint fine, looked more like a tourist drop-in than a pub for regulars but I wouldn't mind going back.
Agree with that recent review; absolutely bloody awful staff! Covent Garden the hub of London and don't mind paying nearly 4 quid a pint but the miseries behind the bar doesn't make it a smooth drink going down. Anyway loads of bars around there so no need to go back to that one again.

Went to this pub for the first time last night and all I can say is how unbelievably rude this sour-faced girl behind the bar was. When we complained to another bar tender, his attitude was 'what do you expect me to do about it?' Verdict - AVOID. Their attitude to customers stinks and there's tons of far better pubs in the area.

I knew this pubs years ago when it was one of the few pubs in the area that knew how to keep real ale. Unfortunately the interior of the pub has been gutted and nothing remains of this once lovely pub. It may suit the trendies that frequent Covent Garden but I prefer to pubs to be pubs and not pretend to be wine bars.
I spent an evening in here recently and Id happily like to report that there has been a vast improvement in the attitude of the staff. They were efficient and friendly and served a good pint of ale putting this pub back on my Covent Garden radar.
I have more than doubled my last rating.
This is typical of a number of Youngs pubs these days sofas, low tables, very clean and clinical. Its not much like the pub I used to know when it was a bastion of real facing the onslaught of keg beer. It was also quite smaller then, before it bought up, and expanded into, the premises next door. Any real character it had has been lost over the years. And Youngs Special for over 3 a pint is pretty expensive, even by London standards. But Ive no doubt that there are people who like this sort of place, in which case good for you but its not for me!
I stopped in here for lunch a few weeks ago. I found a very quiet pub, not too many customers, but it was mid afternoon. I had fish and chips which although a little pricey was very good. A good selection of Youngs beers on tap. There were sofas and tables in one part of the pub and high chairs and tables in another. It was an enjoyable experience and I would certainly visit again.
Service good but rare steak cooked all the way through so no pink and burnt potato wedges underneath. Wine also very pricey. OK
Situated in Covent Garden, The Marquis of Anglesey is an upmarket, slightly trendy Youngs establishment. The neat interior, rubber stamped fittings and living room style seating style seating undoubtedly sits well with the masses and I have to admit, I was comfortable enough on my visit yesterday evening (29th Dec). The roaring fire was most definitely welcome. Clientele were on the modern side and most definitely not local. In fact I doubt this is a pub which ever has a specific regular crowd. The beers on offer were pricey, though both the Winter Warmer and Special were served in decent nick. This isnt a spectacular pub by any means, buy yes, its decent enough and worth swinging by if in the area.

Visited a couple of weeks ago for a reunion with some ex work colleagues. What an excellent pub. Reasonable range of real ales and well kept. We ate there also and found the food to be excellent also. Will definitely use this one again when I'm in the area.
Reasonable couple of beers last night. Seems to have been done up to quite a high standard. Which is always encouraging when the interior designers get there hands on pubs.

This is close to where I work so I popped in here for lunch today and found it quite empty, considering the location. Got served very quickly, had a couple of pints of Waggledance... all in all it was an enjoyable experience.
This is a very poor pub that is always busy due to its location; hence the management and staff could not give a toss about customer service. I was the only person waiting at the bar for 2 minutes whilst 3 bar staff talked with each other, occasionally looking over at me and then looking away. When I did finally get served it was laboured, with a sigh.
There are so many pubs around this area that I do not understand why anyone would want to drink in there.

The management of this pub have clearly discovered BITE!

Visited the Marquis with a group of friends on a central pub crawl ,last week and had to write to say a big thank you to the staff and management of the pub , what was meant to be a quick drink then move on to the next ,turned into a night spent here ..... the layout "open-plan" air-conditioned , great beers, fantastic "fresh-cooked" food and friendly staff made a meeting place into a destination pub! Well done to Kojak?(mgr i think?)and his team for going that extra bit in an area full of rip-off merchants , if this is "Youngs" standard ,then I'm a convert .

Horrible place. Arrogant staff, dodgy beer, overpriced food, not comfortable or enjoyable in the least. Please do avoid.
The worst Youngs pub I have ever been to - by miles.

great pub , great beer , great service , when im in covent garden i always visit this pub , as i always get a great welcome and a good pint of YOUNGS ORDINARY( but it is a little more expensive than most YOUNGS pubs)
i have always found the beer quality of this pub to be very good, the staff are always very friendly , i also eat here on the odd occasion and find the food of very good quality and value for money . i have had a CLOUDY pint once and when i returned it to the bar it was changed without question as they had just changed the barrel. no quibble and no questions asked. GREAT PUB when in the area.
As per the other reviews, I got served dodgy Youngs beer here. I pointed it out to the unhelpful bar staff and surly manager, and they refused to give me a different pint in exchange. The manager is a joker, who attempted to bamboozle me by showing me the operation of the barrels in the basement. All this managed to show was that behind the scenes the hygiene isn't great. This pub is one for the tourists (ie, people that won't come back anyway, so might as well serve them tripe) and I would recommend avoiding it and going to the large number of other decent pubs round the covent garden area.
I have been using this pub for a very long time, so I was highly hacked off when I recently declined a pint of muddy ordinary, and was told that it was perfectly OK. Making allowances for badly-trained bar staff, I was polite but firm, whereupon the manager came over and said that yes indeed it was perfectly OK but simply a little cloudy because they had been selling so much. It was like mud!!! What is happening to Young's? The refurb is not to my taste but this is a busy city pub so you don't always expect comfort, but young's is all about the beer, and even if the beer's off The staff should shut up and change it if asked (politely)

Slightly modernised, but still have good beer. Well worth visiting if in the area and in need of a rest.
Really unhappy with this place now. Received rude and surly experience from an arrogant sod in the upstairs restaurant. Told him what I thought of him and walked out. He did apologise however, which is fair play. By that time though I was thoroughly hacked off and not willing to order the overpriced food.
Young's need to get a grip on some of the pubs in their estate.
anonymous - 29 Jan 2006 19:40 |
Not too much to shout about here. A rather uninspiring modernized pub aimed more at diners, theatregoers and one off customers. There is a restaurant upstairs yet the main bar is still predominantly geared at eating. There is a rather spartan feel to the pub that consists of 2 largish rooms separated by a large pillar in the middle. Basic furnishings and plain decor contrasted by a few sofas and modern pictures. The best feature is probably the roaring fire at the back of a pub - most welcome on a cold winter day. Decent enough Youngs beers but they come at a price. Winter Warmer was 2.90 and given the previous comments about the lager prices, this must be a candidate for the most expensive pub in the area. With several other pubs close by (2 within 20 yards of the front door) there is no shortage of competition and for me, there just is not enough character about the place to warrant paying over the top for more frequent visits.
This is consistently one of my favourite central London pubs, even through the recent(ish) refurb. Not had bad beer there, and the atmosphere is fine and cosy when you go relax on the lovely leather sofas at the back by the fire. Can't usually get a seat anywhere else in there, to be honest.
Disappointingly bland and modernised pub, seemingly catering for feeding the pre - theatre crowd. It's a Youngs pub, but nothing else to commend it. Try one of the many excellent proper pubs in the area if it's a bit of atmosphere you're after
I'd like to say this is a greatpub as I'm always a fan of Youngs pubs, but sadly have to agree with John and others. No atmosphere, and the single doors meant we were blasted with cold air everytime someone wandered in or out. Only the minimum of aleas on, and none of the usual Youngs bottles behind the bar. Still worth dropping into if you're in the area but nothing at all special.
No character, and the seasonals always seem to be off - sometimes only the Young's Bitter is the only real ale on. Having said that I had a lovely Sunday roast here.
anonymous - 1 Jan 2006 19:09 |
Had one of the most expensive pints ever. Carling and Fosters at 3.10 clearly takes the mickey, especially as the same pint costs just 2.50 next door. I've never quite understood Young's pricing policy. Perhaps they just want to sell their own beer and see anything else as some sort of 'premium service'? I think unless you are keen on Young's real ales there's no point whatsoever to visit this pub as the atmosphere, interior etc is what you'd find in most West End pubs.
anonymous - 1 Oct 2005 17:18 |
I'm afraid that the most recent refurbishment removed the last vestiges of character from what was once a decent boozer. Worst of all though was the fact that I was served the worst pint of Youngs Ordinary that I've encountered in 25 years of drinking. A big disappointment all round.
Remarkably soulless pub considering where it's situated - seemed more like a shed that someone's tarted up and added beer pumps to. And as the previous comments have pointed out, the prices take the Michael.
Very expensive, but a nice pub if you can afford it. I noticed that quite a lot of journalists actually work from the pub during the day. Nice chips!
amumd - 10 Feb 2005 15:32 |
I was in here recently. The beer is overpriced (but what do you expect in Covent Garden). I cannot comment on the food as I didn't eat there.
One plus point at this time of year is the real fire that they have. Very nice if you can get anywhere near it.
great pub! nice atmosphere. staff were friendly. very impressed with the food!

From reading some of the other comments here it is difficult to believe this is the same pub I went to last Friday. A pint of lager was 3.15, which I certainly don't consider to be inexpensive or even reasonable. My chicken and avocado sandwich arrived without any avocado in it (and not much in the way of chicken). Unfortunately it took so long to arrive that I didn't have time to send it back, or I would have been late for the theatre performance next door. All in all I felt even more ripped off than I usually do when I go to Covent Garden.
steve - 19 Apr 2004 13:32 |
Real ale served at correct cellar temperature even in the dining area upstairs. Nice!
Nice pub for this part of town. Recently refurbished but not drastically. Good for pre-theatre drinks, rather than clubbing. Food is a wee bit pricey, but of good quality.

I wept the day they removed the sticky carpets, grubby wallpaper and rickety furniture. I have subsequently learned to love the new refurbished Marquess and am pleased that the intoxicating damp stench still lingers in the downstairs toilet.

The Marquess looks the quintessential traditional pub, but thats where it stops. The staff create the relaxed and vibrant atmosphere you tend to find in a trendy bar - but without bar prices. The food is usually good, and there is a restaurant upstairs (although I haven't eaten in it).

Extremely helpful and friendly bar staff. Food is of a very high standard. Upstairs has a very nice relaxing atmoshphere. Great for pre theatre drink and meal.
