user reviews of the Steam Passage, Islington

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

In common with previous reviews, the beer was fine (Sharp's Red Ale), but the experience was spoiled by the four or five TVs all showing football at maximum volume.

The beer was ok but I could only manage one as I was concerned I may go deaf. First table I sat at was so sticky and dirty I had to go and wash my hands. Apart from that not much else to set it apart from every other pub.

Looks inviting from the outside but that appearance does not extend to the inside. Very ordinary London pub. It improves towards the rear which is the only escape from the conversation-killing pounding 'music'. (does anyone actually ever ask for it to be switched on rather than off?) Furniture looks tired and ready for replacement. It is not old in the rustic sense but in the 'chipped veneer, been there since 1973' sense. So it came as a surprise that the beer was certainly OK and my fish and chips was excellent. And at least the TV screens were silent.

Visited on the afternoon of New Year's Eve. My first visit to this place since 1997, when I nipped in on a Saturday afternoon trying to avoid all the hysteria around Di's funeral: big mistake - one side of the pub consisted of an entire wall of TVs, all showing it.

Glad to report the TVs have almost all gone, in fact the interior is now completely changed. Tables towards the front are ideal for Upper Street people watching. Pretty standard menu and range of drinks: three handpumps for Pride, GK Abbot and, err, more Pride. Not a great deal on the cider front - Strongbow at 3.10.

Disabled access (via the right hand door) and WC with RADAR lock, although on the day I was there it had neither paper or a functioning wash basin.

Sort of non-descript chain pub with various menus and wine lists cluttering the tables. Irritating. Boring beers, not very well kept and miserable manager/landlord. Wouldn't bother - there are plenty of other better bars on Upper St/

There seems to have been a change of manager or something as things have changed dramatically! Really nice atmosphere, beer and food were spot-on (real ale). Staff were really friendly. Well worth a visit!

terrible place, had a steak ale pie which made me ill for the rest of the day and a pint of flat lager.
won't go back.

Non-descript at best. Have been a number of times foolishly thinking I can avoid the hustle and bustle and uber-kitsch Islington set (not everyone in Islington I'd add, just the poseurs).

On OdeCs point, this is becoming alarmingly familiar. Pubs seem to want you to drink beer, yet the cost of actually pouring a pint of coke is half that of a beer. Why charge double for it then?

Came in here to watch the football on Saturday. Asked for a pint of diet coke and was charged 3.20 - more than every draught lager or cider there but Stella. Queried this with the barman, who informed me that the pub has just changed owners - apparently they've almost doubled the prices of all soft drinks, which he thought was disgusting but obviously there was nothing he could do about it. Fantastic way of encouraging responsible drinking!

Uninspiring. Nothing to commend it.

Absolute shocker. Waited at the bar for ten minutes with no service and four behind the bar. Even resorted to O'Neill's up the road. Avoid like the plague.

Staff alternate between the fit, the mad, those of questionable hygiene and the brain-dead. Service is average at the best of times. It's just been done up, although for some reason I can't tell the difference inside. Too jaded, I guess. Boring. Having said that, it's convenient for an after-work scoop.

How did they manage to make a pub so ordinary? It has absolutely zero character and is instantly forgettable. Remarkable. That said, it is a good meeting place because it's easy to find, fight probability is significantly lower than the Nags Head and people won't want to get stuck in there all night cos it's so tedious.

Best of a poor bunch of pubs at the Angel end of Upper Street. The building reminds me of a good old-fashioned pub but the management are aiming for a more studenty/trendy feel, however that said myself and my friends are neither students or trendy(some try-they fail!) and we all felt welcome and comfortable in here. Not the widest range of Lagers but they are of a good standard and there is always Caffrey's if youhave a taste for loopy juice. Prices as you'd expect. As mentioned in a previous posting, barmaids tend to be very fit here.

Your normal chain pub on Upper Street. Can't really say anything other than that:

Bland, but ok.
fatherpierre - 27 Jan 2005 01:31
Lager is OK (they don't sell any real beer). Feels a bit like a student union bar. Barmaids were quite fit. Thats' it really. if you're passing and thirsty then why not?
