user reviews of the Metro Bar, Sidcup

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

With time to spare before my train, I had time for one last drink in Sidcup and I selected the Iron Horse as it's immediately opposite the station. The 2 real ales were both from the Bexley Brewery - Bexley's Own & Golden Acre. I quite enjoyed the former when I was recently in Bexleyheath. But, I thought it would be remiss of me not to try the latter. As expected, Bexley's Own is more to my taste. The pub itself has minimal seating and it's primarily set out for live music with a very stripped back interior. Not a bad option though.

I used to use this pub many years ago when I lived in Blackfen before moving up North. However when I was in London visiting family this week I called in and had a great evening. The pub has live music and caters for a mixture of tastes. I would certainly recommend going in now it is under new and better management.

Looks like the Iron Horse has become a venue for Rock Bands at the weekend. Let's hope the place has improved.
Boyne - 23 Apr 2014 16:16
Now re-emerged in its previous incarnation as The Iron Horse. No idea what else has changed.

If you love decent karaoke and good laugh you have to try this place on a Tuesday and Wednesday. They have the friendliest punters in there who genuinely just wanna have fun... really good atmosphere! They made me feel really welcome. Only thing Id say is it often shuts at 11.30 when it can go on til 12....landlady we want the extra half hour lol!
katies89 - 18 Apr 2013 08:03
Fab little pub nice people welcomed with a smile, beer a bit pricey no garden but other than that nice to see a stage in there bet they have some real entertainment in there i here from bar staff the karaoke is good on a Wednesday mixed age group as i can see but seen some of the past reviews and was a bit worried, but cant see what all the fuss was about but i might even pop back to night i will be back.

Once the new housing complex near Sidcup Station has been completed I hope that the people who live there don't make the Metro their local. Will give them the wrong view of Sidcup. Stay well clear if you want good beer, intelligent conversation and to avoid poor music.

I really want to give this place a scathing review, as it's tiny, cold and dingy, but I have to say I've never been given any grief by either the bouncers, the barstaff or the regulars in my many visits here.

Still a crap pub experience though. Went in there last Saturday at around half eight and there were only about seven people there. Avoid.

Jilly50 wrote nearly two years ago that the ID scanners keep out the losers and scumbags out of the Metro. Obviously the scanners aren't working as the losers and scumbags are still drinking in the Metro. Saying that, better they drink in the Metro rather than in other pubs and spoil them.
Boyne - 22 Dec 2010 15:11
It's not a pub. It's a cafe-bar that serves alcohol rather indiscriminately. Hence the recent bothers. A lot of the punters are hardly out of nappies.

If you want a real pub, stroll up the road to the Alma.
pub_aficianado - 18 Dec 2010 16:17
If the Metro pub was the only pub in Sidcup I would give up a drinking rather than visit it. It's not a pub. It's a home for the low-life of Sidcup.
Boyne - 23 Sep 2010 20:45
The Metro attracts a certain crowd, either you love it or hate it. If you like loud bashful/bashed over head places then the Metro is the place to be. Even with scanners, it doesn't really make much of a difference. The drinks, to match the clientele, are simple. Lager lovers will be happy, so too will the alcopop lovers, but don't expect much more. The Metro still serves its purpose, to suck the riff-raff of Sidcup in to its malicious orbit.

Had a great night New Years Eve I even liked my picture in the ID Scanner
perfec tfor keeping the losers and scumbags out !
jilly50 - 23 Jan 2009 02:05
glasses are dirty and wrong for each drink you buy ie buy a beer and get a guinesses glass, great in the summer with the doors open, friendly enough pub and a good night out.
londondrinker2008 - 4 Dec 2008 14:43
needs a refit and development , potential for a top class pub, ban all under 21,s and anyone in tracksuits and trainers. , this being the first pub you see when getting off the train does sidcup no favours at all... 0/10 cause right now its total rubbish

The_Pub_Inspector - 11 Nov 2008 19:51
Give this one a wide berth... I would rather die of thirst. This place is enough to turn someone away from drinking... period!!!
tuggerdownunder - 1 Nov 2008 18:50
Agree with Boswell that the Metro should be burned down. Sadly, the chavs and retards who drink in the Metro would go to other pubs in Sidcup and spoil them.
Boyne - 11 Sep 2008 12:42
Walked past it a couple of nights ago. Festooned with chavs and pikeys. Burn the bloody place down.
Boswell - 9 Sep 2008 15:57
Yes, agree totally.
The Iron Horse was no better.
It should have stayed as The Station Hotel.

A decent young lad lost his life here, surely that shgould be reason enough to avoid the place.
IanSeale - 25 Jun 2008 21:14
It always was a nasty place. It was attracting thugs and yobs twenty five years ago. I gather a lot of them commute in from inner city hellholes to further spread their viciousness.
Boswell - 24 Jun 2008 16:31
Aside from the recent stabbing outside, I've never liked this pub very much. Of the 4 or 5 times I have visited I've always had an unpleasant experience. Whether it be a louthmouth skinhead hurling racist abuse during a live football match or young chavvy girl with her orange makeup on, making a nuisance of herself yelling across the entire pub. The decor isn't that bad, the service ok and the range of drinks was pretty good but it's one of those places that seems to attract the unsavoury type.
Halcyon - 10 Jun 2008 15:37
Previous posting was prescient.
Bloke got stabbed (died) there last night in a brawl outside.
Nice place.
chopin - 24 May 2008 13:27
Bar is really unpleasant atmosphere, not much selction of drinks. Not recommended

I had intended to visit The Alma yesterday (Oct 23rd), but being the lazy sod that I am and The Metro Bar seemingly being the drinking establishment closest to the train station, I decided to check here out here instead. What I encountered was a rather dull and boring bar, with FM friendly rock and pop for entertainment. There were no attention-grabbing knickknacks of note and really nothing of interest within, whatsoever. It is all very, very bland. No ales on offer (unsurprisingly) and the Guinness (2.80) tasted a little sour. I would say its okay for a swift one before boarding the train, but not a lot less. If anything, at least this bar is inoffensive.
HTM69 - 24 Oct 2007 18:23
We had to wait 45 minutes for chicken strips and salad (the salad had better days), the placed wasn't even a third full.

Actually whenever I have gone passed the place it has never been very full and I know why.

"This is one of those pubs where you either love it or you hate it. Im in the middle." Anonymous

Erm...yes. All ye who enter here, abandon hope of intelligent conversation!
Get_me_some_Old_Tom - 14 May 2007 13:56
This is one of those pubs where you either love it or you hate it. Im in the middle. It needs updating, the wallpaper on the ceiling is hanging off and the floor is so sticky, if you stand in the same spot for more than 30 seconds you are there for the rest of the nite. The mens toilets are rank, the womens are nice(carpets and mirrors) dont ask how i know about the womens toilets. The juke box never has the songs you want but does have a good selection. The bar staff are pretty nice and welcome. This pub is ok for a local although i wouldnt go out of my way to go there. One good thing is that the pub is situated rite next to the train station so its good to pop into b4 a nite up town. You must try it if you are local its a good nite on friday's very busy, and tuesday and wednesday are kareoke , oh and mondays are cheap drinks nite. As i said at the begining you will either love it or hate it!
anonymous - 11 May 2007 21:07
I like it!! it needs updating!! the chairs suck and the flooring and bogs need doing other than that.. its ok!
bigneil86 - 16 Apr 2007 15:28
Bring back The Iron Horse and the bikers! What a pity a pub with such character became such a formulaic place. But it fits well in Sidcup as there isn't one pub worth visiting any longer. Sidcup must be the most boring place in SE London.
Get_me_some_Old_Tom - 26 Oct 2006 13:52
I disagree with all of you, My fellow Team Diva member and I went there on a saturday night.
We had a FANTASTIC time, got stupidly drunk but nethertheless was great fun. We especially liked the jukebox so that we could pick our own tuneidge. The people in there were very friendly (although slightly rudey and some G busters were spotted)
All in all, very good!
hedgehodgson - 6 Oct 2006 11:58
popped in as in the area , havent been here or in the area for over 2 years , what a shock!!! , in need of something. only 3 words suit what i found. BRING BACK JANE!! . she was the manager when the place was first re furbed. sad to see really. wont be back for at least another couple of years so hope to see an improvement.
kiwiphil - 25 Sep 2005 15:40
no comments posted since 2004? you guys must really hate this place. Mind you, it doesn't do itself any favours. The Metalic chairs are uncomfortable and no amount of alcohol consumption offers any respite.
This pub attracts the local barfly community. But it's alright for one or two. Sidcup isn't a good place for pubs nowdays; most flee the town in droves at the weekend.
kriekboozer - 15 Aug 2005 19:05
The last comment does not reflect this place. It is not relaxing on those metal bloody chairs and it is boring. The only reason it is full is because Sidcup Station has no other pubs, bar the Alma, and thats shut in the afternoons.
Its okay for 1 or 2 but really, forget it, don't bother.
Jim - 21 Jan 2004 18:05
the previous comment by anonymous - 1 nov 2003 is obviously made by the management namely lee and clare and more like an advert than a site visitor , although i will say the metro is a relaxing pub and food very reasonably priced but fat bloke portions.the entertainment is of good standard .there is a lot of regular clientel namely keith the jacket, big dave, jordy the legend, les the lima, richard the printer, mark the plumber, richard and paul the gamblers and frank the walrus to mention just a few.staff are very pleasant but of a thesbian nature.
they seem busier mincing behind the bar and not always attentive to customers although they are under immense pressure when the rush hour trains come into sidcup.i recommend the metro to anyone for a relaxing, friendly and sometimes comical drink although if you like a slice of lemon in your drink forget it!
anonymous - 10 Dec 2003 16:37
this pub has something for everyone.the food is original and reasonably priced , monday's quiz night ends with a free meal for all contestants (the chicken &ham pie is the best),wednesday hosts a karoake evening (with two drama colleges near by the standard is sometimes outstanding)saturday is normally disco/karaoke.this pub is not owned by a large monopoly, so it seems the managment and staff seem a lot more relaxed . give it a go.
