I have been frequenting this pub now for a couple of years and I have to say it's nothing less than an enjoyable experience. As I understand it there has been a change of management about three years ago and although I cannot comment on what it was like before i get the impression that much has been done to improve the place.
The pub is very spacious so there are plenty of areas to sit and have a drink on an average afternoon. i can imagine it getting a lot busier for football games and band nights, but that's to be expected. The bar staff all seem warm and friendly, had a good natter with the barkeep about his beer.
Drinks wise they have more lagers on tap than bitters, off the top of my head I think Carlsberg, Becks Vier, maybe Fosters, and the bitter was Brakespeare for a while although it changes periodically. Whilst bitter drinkers might feel disappointed at the lack of selection, the one they do have is always a very good pint and looked after with plenty of care. Wine drinkers now also have a lot more choice, and there are the other usual suspects (bottled beer, alcopops, softs etc).
There is also now a beer garden which overlooks the church tower and remembrance garden, so smokers and sun dwellers are catered for. I also noticed large HD sets and even a 3D screen for the football fans.
All in all a very pleasant experience, recommended.

I recently visited ther Frenchmen and was really disappointed with the level of customer service I received. Both the staff and Landlord were of the opinion that my diet pepsi was flat firstly because I had ice in the drink and secondly because I "wasn't drinking it quickly enough ..." wouldn't visit again!

6.25 for a j smiths and a carlsberg, decent jukebox. sorry don't recall much else but then it was our 13th pub that day!! 5/10

Found what was the Happy Frenchman only to find that he wasn't that happy anymore and they have renamed it The Frenchman. It seems to have gone a bit upmarket since my last visit and whilst the basic layout is the same they've clearly spent a bit of money on the decor and it's now quite a decent pub. Pool table, dartboard, quiz and fruit machines and a jukebox. It looks like they still have live music events. Just Adnams Bitter on and was in good enough nick for our first two beers of a boozy weekend. Rating gone up from a 4 to a 5.

Has recently re-opened having been closed for a while. Shame. It was better closed

An unwelcoming and not exactly friendly bar (rather than pub). Totally devoid of atmosphere. Has the odd colourful character in it, e.g. the guy with the completely tattooed head! Speaking as a band member it's not a good venue to see a band in or to play in. Also, the manager double books bands and lies through his teeth. Do yourself a favour and avoid. Folkestone has much better to offer than this.

I love the place got better in the last 2 years. Management has tried to make a good place for live music venue. Delicious food.

Went down the Frenchman 020704 and saw an original band called Kingkuda,I think. They were totally amazing and well worth seeing. The guitarist did some really strange things with his guitar, getting noises out of it I have never heard before.A totally amazing band to watch!!!! more of this please.

I really liked the place!! It's a shame they don't have more original bands play there.I was there on the 11/06/04 and was well aware that they called time.It is the law after all isn't it? As for an oncorr...well the band that played that night was totally pants and the covers they did do wanted to make you put your fingers in your ears!! I was happy and so were many others when they wern't allowed to do an oncorr,I think staff listened to us punters when we shouted NO MORE!!!! more original stuff please or a good covers band. Thanks

A large high ceilinged pub which looks a bit rough but is quite friendly. It has a good atmosphere with lots going on and seems to attract a mixed age clientele. Only visited twice but the real ales weren't that good either time.

Bad place to see bands now (used to be very good) Down there tonight (11/6/04)stopped serving without warning or announcement by band, bang on 11.00pm, wouldn't let band do oncorr, and lights going out to kick people out by 11.20pm. Worst I've ever known the place in over 20 years !!!

Big place, live bands, real ale and 2 pool table (though bizarrely only one pool cue)... seems to have a bit of a bad rep among people who've never actually been there, but we liked it.
