user reviews of the Crown, Covent Garden

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Managed to get some seats on a busy Sunday afternoon of shopping. Beer pleasant enough but pricey and neither barman seemed to want to fill the pint to the correct mark. My wife said the Guinness was excellent as the temperature was almost what it should have been.

Very ordinary, corner boozer. The pint of Youngs Gold I drank was OK but there are better pubs elsewhere in the area.

I use this place a lot and I've never found it anything other than a good basic boozer with decent beer.

Aware of the bad reviews ventured in here on a Sunday lunchtime to find it pleasingly quiet - a friendly helpful barman serving and all was fine.........

Wedge shaped old style boozer on the Seven Dials just north of Covent Garden. The pub is effectively divided into two rooms although it is possible to walk right round the smallish central bar. The front room is mainly standing with a TV above the door for watching the football. the smaller back room has a couple of sofas (Boo Hiss!!), a fireplace and a small number of tables. As an added Christmas attraction the fireplace had a pair of Santas legs hanging down to give the impression he was stuck in the chimney!!!. Christmas card hanging up in the bar gave a bit of a homely feel to the place as well.

Ales on were Adnams and Pride (GKIPA was off). Overall the Crown is a pleasantly traditional place with that slightly scruffy feel that I rather like There are not many pubs left like this in the area and it's worth a visit if you are in the vicinity.

The long standing previous owner here who retired some nine years ago, was in my opinion the rudest (and most hilariously droll) landlord in London.
Forget the other famously rude one at the Coach And Horses. Gabbi was awful.Far worse.
The bar stools were chained to the floor and you had to sign a little book to be given the key for the gents..... He would bar you for life for the smallest infringement of his 'rules'

So, nearly a decade later I meet my old mate Covent Garden Dave here for a pint, only to discover that the tradition continues - infact has been bettered!

What an arrogant old runt the present incumbent is.
I think that they must do a finishing school especially for the staff at this establishment.
PISS POOR BEER TOO.........
AVOID THIS PUB.

I absolutely hated this little pub. The food was dispicable especially as I never ordered hairs with my food. The pub down the road from it...The Two Brewers was much better and the staff were friendly and kind but The Crown is not a great pub to have a drink in. They had real ales and fruit machines and such but this pub is definitely in the wrong part of London by far.

It was just about open when I dropped in yesterday. The floor was till wet and smelled of disinfectant, presumably and hopefully as a result of having recently been washed. They werent doing food, possibly as a result of some building or maintenance work that was in progress. They had Adnams Bitter, Bombardier and GKIPA on handpump. This used to be a top notch pub it might still be one on a good day, but it was hard to tell yesterday. Will give it another try sometime.

Unremarkable pub, with more customers standing around outside having a smoke than sitting down inside. The barstaff seemingly have a very limited grasp of what constitutes a full pint - every single pint of draught bitter I saw poured was well under measure, and lager drinkers only got a full glass if the barperson was too busy talking to flick the tap back up overly quickly. However, actually had quite a reasonable pint of Duchy Originals Organic Bitter on draught (which I had only ever seen in bottled form before) once I explained the concept of 'topping up' for the third time to a very unhappy-looking East European barman.

Cramped and smelly with dodgy beer. Even when I switched to Guinness it still tasted rather odd.

Another poor Covent Garden pub.

Friendly little pub just off Shaftesbury Avenue. Popped in beofre going to Hairspray at the Shaftesbury and had a decent pint of 6X. Didn't have anything to eat, but the paninis were being cooked behind the bar in front of us and certainly the girl behind the bar can't have been on a Health and Safety course recently! Interesting expedition downstairs (mind your head) to get to the gents.

we tucked ourselves away in a corner, unfortunately by the toilet. found it ok. nothing special.
DirtyPanda - 8 Feb 2007 22:54
To be honest nothing special when you consider some of the other pubs close by the bar staff though make it even unspecial with there attitude

Agree with the last comment, staff pushy when u order single spirits. If I want a double I'll ask for 1. Music was dreadful and had to wait for staff to finish their fag break before I caught their eye.
WonnacottP - 18 Nov 2006 21:34
been in a few times and been unimpressed. bad atmosphere, found staff to be surly and pushy regarding drinks. there's alot of options in the area - best to look elsewhere.

Can I just repeat, now that this has become pub of the day, its totally uninspring and very typical of the pubs in this area that can rely entirely on tourist and passing trade and therefore have no reason to improve.

Just when you think youve unearthed all the decent pubs tucked away in the back streets of the West End, you walk past another. In fact, I have probably walked past the Crown a dozen times without really noticing it. Situated on Dial Square, it is just far enough away from the bright lights to remain undiscovered by the hordes that throng nearby Covent Garden and Charing Cross Road areas. A fairly small pub established in 1833 with many traditional features including a glazed tile exterior, bar screens, ironwork and some interesting clocks, 2 on the walls by the door and a railway station style clock hanging from the ceiling near the bar. They serve 3 Real Ales alongside the usual array of lager / cider at reasonable prices for the area. The bare floorboard area in the front of the pub has a few stools and there is a partition that leads to a carpeted area with a few tables at the rear. Customer base tends to be office workers and the atmosphere is quite civilised. On the downside, bits of the pub are tatty but this probably adds to the authentic feel. The fireplace is rather wasted and there are a few bare shelves and cabinets that are just asking to filled with bric-a-brac. For the scientifically minded, on the outside of the pub by the doors is a plaque that shows how to convert the sundial in the square from solar time to Greenwich Mean Time although using a watch to tell the time will be a lot quicker and easier. Well worth a visit.

Totally uninspiring place with one saving grace - in summer you can take your drink out and sit on the "dial" in the middle of the seven dials junction.

Aside from that, nothing to commend it. Bad selection of ropey beers, small and unwelcoming interior with all the standard ads for drink offers and whirring fruitie you expect in this type of place.

Small but full of character. Lovely friendly civilised place with good beer and comfortable furnishings. The staff are really nice people.

Went ther last night, friendly staff, decent pint and great location! Very good value for money! Had change out of a tenner for 3 alcoholic drinks! Yippie!(though not all for me of course!)

This small pub has been a favorite of mine for many years. The staff and regulars are usually quite nice. The toilets are small, but I enjoy the adventure of getting to them. It is a lovely place.

went in there to watch the fa cup final i was standing at the bar and squinting at the bar for about 5 seconds to see the score before i got myself and the burd a beer. the landlord then switched off the tv and said "you cant watch this till you buy a drink," bear in mind i am standing at the bar at this stage. there were about 5 people in the pub while everywhere else around was packed. so we then proceeded to leave without getting a beer and any possiblility of him breaking even for the day. what a stupid man

I was there on St. George's night. It was cool - the only place in London with 2 a pint! I met a nice Canadian bird called Sarah. If your still out there give me a shout!
jonny - 7 May 2004 11:34
Pokey and twee, it's not a bad little boozer. Seating can be hard to find due to its size, but it's a friendly enough place.
Ruby - 31 Mar 2004 15:37
Went there on Sunday. Was empty at first then filled up very quick. Nice, cosy place but mind your head when going to the very small toilets. Not bad at all.

Lovely little pub on one of the spokes of Seven Dials (hence it's weird shape), only spitting distance from the Cambridge Theatre (Gerry! Gerry! Gerry!).

Good place to pop into, though men's loos rather small.

6/10
