Had a nice pint of Cropton's Hawaii in here yesterday before visiting the museum across the road. It is a Nicolson's pub and a tad touristy, as said before, but they had about 5 real ales on and the food looked good. I'd recommend it if you're in this part of town.

Terrible tourist trap pub with little to recommend it.
When we made our visit here we were told there was no real ale as "all the lines are being cleaned at the moment".
Note to Landlord...that's what you're supposed to do when the pub's shut.

As mentioned by rpadam below, this pub is really aimed at the tourist trade. The focus is on food but if you just want a drink then you won't feel too out of place. Three real ales available on my visit, Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted, Deuchars IPA (both 2.70 a pint) and Youngs Special (2.80). The Tenants lager was 2.65. I thought the prices very reasonable for Edinburgh. One of the better pubs in this part of the city.

One of those Edinburgh hostelries in the same 'tradition' as the Nicholson pubs in London (same owners, I believe). Nothing really wrong with it, but very obviously aimed at the transient tourist trade so somewhat lacking in atmosphere. Nice pint of Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted blonde beer, though.

Glad I hadn't read the reviews going in as I would have been put off. Obviously positioned strongly towards the tourist trade but much better than I expected. The beers was the usual boring (sorry...) Deuchars IPA and 80/ selection but the food was much better than I expected with an absolutely superb ravioli with corn fed chicken. Not a terribly beery tale, I'm afraid, but the food makes this somewhere worth going.

No atmosphere,...accosted by the local bore as soon as we went in....fairly mixed age group in there, including numerous tourists

Bit too many loud pretentious students for my liking. Bar staff would rather place was full of students drinking a pint every 2 hours rather than real suppers. Gave us some real attitude when we'd had a few!
Good video jukey is only redeeming feature. Bar staff were well pissed off when we put on Londons Calling for the 15th time

One of the "must see" pubs on the tourist trail, but probably not the place to go for a relaxing session.

tried the haggis there as an american tourist; not bad, although I don't really have any other haggis I've tried to compare it to! friendly service & nice atmosphere, quiet when I was there

Nice looking Georgian building, plenty of wood panelling and flooring. Seems very much a student pub, no real ale but a good pint of Tennents, big screen for sports. Tourists by day and students by night.

First pub I ever went to in Scotland, it has a statue of Bobby the Terrier outside, surely the only statue to a dog anywhere.
I went in hoping to meet a few locals but found the heaving pub full of Englishmen shouting about their hellish drive up the M1. The one bloke I did chat to couldn't understand my London accent and I didn't get what the hell he said. Nice place though. Had to leave 'cos it was a bit of a tourist trap (said the tourist.)
