The Bricklayers Arms is still going but that's not exactly on the estate.
|
Has now closed down. After many years of being a local pub, and then a leading prog rock venue, the last of the pubs around the Cambridge Road estates is no more. The new gentrified Kingston upon Thames doesn't have room for places like that, it seems.
|
stubled in here after seeing AFC play. despite appearing to be closed down we could see a light round the back, so we gave it a go , and it turns out it is in fact open, and is now a 'pound in the pot' strip pub.
if £1 fannies are your thing, then fill your boots.
|
Good music venue with quite a few specialist events, especially prog nights. Have seen the mighty It Bites here on a couple of occasions and found the acoustics to be excellent. They also serve a couple of surprisingly well kept real ales - Adnam's Bitter and Shepherd Neame Spitfire.
|
in this club the girls are calling themselfs lapdances when infact they should be classed as prostitutes, they offer there services out for a price and they will literally do n e thing with out protection. This place is a dirty seedy dump!!!!
|
If you get bored of the band playing when you are here then you can always take a trip round the back to the 1 in a pint glass titty bar which I admit I have a couple of trips to for a bit of a giggle
|
With reference to what a previous said about the use of digital cameras/phones, was in the venue last night and there were a lot of people using this and none of them were confiscated.
|
Good sized pub. Above average acoustics. This should be classed as a live music venue rather than a pub. Service was slow, eventhough there were hardly any customers. Lager is of reasonable quality but Guiness. They have a some reasonably well known (if you know the genre) prog rock band. Is in what some might class as a grimm park of town.
|
This 300 capacity toilet circuit music pub is without doubt one of the best of its kind although nestled in between unattractive estate tower blocks on the outskirts of town, it hardly hits any immediately welcoming trigger points.
The 2 room interior consists of the main bar with the stage area and a rear room with pool table and plasma TV. The pool table is pushed aside when major(ish) bands play here to accommodate the merchandise stall. The walls are dark and dingy as befits a place of this ilk and posters and flyers dominate.
Two ales are generally available (Adnams and Spitfire) of surprisingly decent quality and excellent value at 2.85 & 2.90 a pint respectively. Service is efficient and friendly even when busy (I recently saw Ash play here to a heaving crowd and managed to get served promptly every time). Beers are served in coloured polycarbonate glasses so you can have fun waving them at the ultra violet lights and watch the contents magically turn into some interesting shades of reds, blues and greens.
For the music side of things, the stage is a good size with good sight lines (a small raised area behind the mixing desk is an ideal vantage point away from the mosh area) and decent sound and lighting. They do attract some decent names to play here and if you like live music pubs, the Peel is pretty hard to fault, apart from the customary flooded toilets of course.
|
Adnams was good and Spitfire was on offer. Hosts a large flying ant population by the Cambridge road door, which makes sitting outside less pleasant.
|
A good drop of Adnams to wet the throat while listening to a band - Magenta especially good last night. Looks like a dive from the outside but inside it is sometimes the house of progression. The people there are friendly too. No, I haven't been to the Blue Bar ;)
|
The best metal pub in the world!!...definately better than the fighting cocks considering their gig venue is the size of a peanut.
|
Do they still have the muff round the back?
Used to go here when I was 16/17 and get recked on cheap lager and weed - happy days!
|
Would be a real shame, they were putting on some excellent prog gigs.
|
Closing? Permanently or just temporarily? These are not good times for pubs, especially in South Kingston.
|
closin in jan i hear
|
Stripper wasn't bad looking when I came here (some guy off his face on something enlightened me as to the rest of the building's function at an Orange Goblin gig). But I honestly find that kind of thing under bright lights tacky, and walking around with a jar asking for donations afterwards, is super-tacky. Makes you feel sorry for the girl, not horny. Still if you're going to do it, time the best looking strippers to coincide with the most boring bands and you're onto a winner... I've seen a few good gigs here, just a shame the trains don't run a bit later and the station isn't right next to some dodgy estate, and dark as hell - I might come down more often.
|
The Peel has 3 main rooms, the main bar area is quite a small room and has a pool table situated inside. There are a few seats and tables, although not that many. Of the ales there were Spirfire and Adnams Broadside, believe i was overcharged but this could of been an innocent error.
Just next door is the live music venue and if you inspect a little further you shall come across the Blue Bar which is a strip club.
|
Fantastic pub, great music for the most part, great sights to be seen as well, beer not too expensive A good laugh if going with a few mates though is a little bit of trek to get to from the town
anonymous - 1 Mar 2008 11:07 |
Havnt been for years as I have left the area. I lived in New Malden (1998-2001). But I rememeber the strippers at the Robert Peel! I went in the small room with my (then) girlfreind and we walked into the middle of a show (the girl was lovely!).
However, I was there to see The Selector (complete with Pauline Black) and it was a top music venue then (probably still is now).
So I have come to praise it! Cheers!
|
Came here on Saturday to see Twelfth Night, excellent. Not sure I would come here as a pub, only Adnams The Bitter on and a bit of a dive.
As a music venue it's fine though.
|
Getting a great deal better.
Most of the Chavs have been moved away to other pubs.
Staff are cheerful and helpful.
Girls are stunning. Poles are shiny..............
The sun has got it's hat on...
What else can I say?
anonymous - 12 Sep 2007 18:55 |
Awful council estate bar with a great strip club. Below average rehearsal studios are booked solid with crappy student bands most of the time. Miserable staff aswell but why shouldn't they be when they are in the middle of hell. Has got some character but it is mainly crap.
anonymous - 4 Sep 2007 15:25 |
Generally its a great place to go for the music. PA is good, bar staff generally pretty friendly (unless they think you're u18). Fact is the Peel is definitely first and foremost a music venue, its not worth going for if you just fancy a quiet pint etc.
|
Forty years ago I used to swill beer here after air cadets down the road;I guess that, when you are 17 years old, beer taps and funnels are all you require of a pub. When you turn 60 you like to sit down while funnelling. Couldn't find a seat, so spilled too much beer on myself ever to return to the Peel.
|
Don't be so down on it, it was one of my fave pubs before i went to uni, still is ace for music and one of the best in kingston. Considering its surroundings its done well!
|
I usually come for the strippers round the back...
anonymous - 15 Sep 2006 16:10 |
Well the venue it's self is pretty good, but seeing as this is BEERintheevening I'd have to say the bar it's self is pretty poor. I can't see why anyone would want to drink here unless a band they wanted to see was on.
anonymous - 15 Sep 2006 16:08 |
Battle of the bands? What about the cabret? What the Peel has been known for for 30 years. Beer average though.
|
Don't forget Battle of the Bands Semi finals Friday / Saturday 2nd and 3rd June....it's going to be great!
|
Guys if you have a problem parkin,Kingsmeadow afcw/kingstonians ground is 5 mins on the main rd towards new malden the next turning on the same side iirc, car park is huge v often empty with no charge also a bar there if you want a pre gig pint.

BANDS: Will Haven DATE: Wednesday 22nd March 2006
Began in the summer of 1997 with the release of El Diablo. Soon after the band began its long haul down the road with US and European tours with the Deftones, Tura Satana, Far and Limp Bizkit. After a full year of touring the band returned with there second effort WHVN in the summer of 1999. After getting great coverage in Kerrang and Alternative Press the band set out again on another long summer with tours with Soufly and Slipknot and a European tour with Fear Factory. Returning home found the band replacing there orignal drummer Wayne Morse with drummer Mitch Wheeler. After the short introduction Mitch entered the studio with Will Haven to release Carpe Diem. This time around the band was headlining tours in the US and the UK. Soon after the long touring cycle the band played there final show in January of 2002. Since the final show Will Haven have still been active with a release of there original EP and a DVD featuring live footage of the band on the road and the final live show. Since then the members of will haven have started new projects such as Ghostride, The Abominable Iron Sloth and Death Valley High. Also started there own label Distruktor Records. Just a little teaser for any fans reading this, NEW Will Haven material will surface very soon, be prepared =)

I find it incredible that the poorer comments about this pub are from anonymous posters!
I drive a top of the range sports car, flash wheels, lovely paint job and never in 10 years (thats over 1500+ visits with .45K cars and 15K bikes) have I ever had it vandalised by anyone! (tempting fate here!) The police put a parking ticket on it once, but I did have two wheels on the pavement, parked on the corner. The venue is that popular that parking close can be difficult. Vandalised twice!! Youre being stalked mate.
Dear Anonymous poster, sorry you have a grievance with the Peel. Please pop in have a word with the landlord. You may find whatever your issues are they may be solved with direct communication. Chav kids intimidatingI think you should stay at home with a Winnie the Pooh book, the worlds a scary place!!! That should keep him inside for a few weeks or perhaps a local night club, just down the road, may be more to your liking with much more touchy feely people. Now if 10 people surrounded me in that place I would be frightened.
|
I only live in Isleworth, I saw "Rock B1tch" here, hard to get to unless you enjoy convoluted public transport jorneys chopping and changing, had to leave early to get last train missing half the set. Thought I would drive there to see "UK Subs". Car was vadalised outside on the estate. Drove again to see "Inkubus Sukkubus" again car vandalised and on way out about 10 Chavs kids stood in a line across the road stopping me from getting out, tried to sorround car. AVOID

I think it is only fair to put the record straight about The peel in Kingston. Ten years ago 2 guys wondered into Kingston wanting to set up a live music venue. They took on the Peel which had a rough reputation. They managed to change the reputation by working together with the authorities and putting on some incredible bands and atists. They did this by doing it all themselves.
Ricky Warwick, 100 Reasons, Ginger (wildhearts), Orange Goblin, Ash, "A", Napalm Death, RockBitch, Akercocke, The Music, Gary Moore, GoreRotted, Shadow's Fall, God Forbid, UK Subs, Rachel Stamp, Lost Prophets, Rival Schools, Instruction, Stampin' Ground, Tyla (Dogs D'Amour), Capdown, Raging SpeedHorn, DragonForce, Hard Fi, The trend, Steranko, Will Haven have and do play the venue.
The Peel has become known as a Rock/Metal venue because of the major press it's had in the music media. It also hosts Alt/Indie Rock music.
The venue has been cleaned up. We don't have trouble from the estate as we have hosted dance & hip hop nights in conjuntion with the authorities this has broken down boundries.
Although people never forget the past, it is important that you know that The Peel is hugely repected by the music business and artists alike.
|
I can't help you about beer or type of cups, but the N77 goes right past the pub and that can take you to Kingston or Wimbledon and plenty of other places further afield. It's also pretty near Norbiton station where you can get trains to Richmond.
|
well, I hope this pub improves, as my fav rock club is 'moving in' !!
- some one said spitfire beer - it will win no awards, but is better than some foamy cr*** !! :)
seriously, if anyone can detail the beer and prices, that would be great.... also have you got 'decent plastic' - I mean the fairly solid ones, that dont crumble if you dont know your strength.. :O
another bit of help needed (webmaster??) is details of all buses.. there will be a lot of lost rockers trying to find thier way home to richmond and further....

A really great pub in a rather dodgy area! Kids are not served alcohol in the pub, they do however buy it up the road from the local off-license, then try to sit outside or by the phone box and make a general nuisance of themselves. Better that than the local park? Kids will always try to drink alcohol, they always have and always will. The bar and door staff always refuse, but given that kids try every night Im there Im not surprised that a few may have got through. As a test send your young looking 12-13 into the off-license and they will get served no questions asked. Then try the same at the pub! Ive see 23 year olds get asked for ID.
Genuinely if your 15 year old is getting served, take a photo and give it to the landlord, he show all the staff and your child wont get in again until its 18! Its that simple.
There are three bars, one the Blue bar has beautiful girls dancing (+21s only here) and the other two have live music and a pool table. Free Jukebox with music ranging from the Jam, Beatles to 10 masked Men (very heavy).
Beer .best I dont comment on that as their best sellers are lagers.
Plastic glasses eventually all live venues will go this way, sadly some people arent happy drunks and this is the best way to preserve life and prevent scars. When I was 16 I witnessed the murder of someone with a glass, for just trying to stop a male from striking his girlfriend (not this pub, but one in Camberley).
Love the pub, wish there were more like it.
If you want short skirts, drunk kids, plastic fantastic lights, fights and over priced drinks try Kingston town, its only just down the road.
|
Recently discovered my fifteen year old daughter is a regular at the pub. So much for its much vaunted, Met Police Approved, door policy! Incidentally she hates the death metal scene - so guys, more death metal bands please, these might be a better deterrent to my under age daughter than your door policy.
anonymous - 30 Dec 2005 02:16 |
laughable outside decor - dubious inside. You wouldn't go there unless you had to or were watching the strippers. Spitfire on tap - could be better.
anonymous - 29 Nov 2005 16:20 |
A shit hole with strippers round the back, I dont mind it but only for a couple.
|
Shi-Ite House for retards, Plastic Glasses for Plastic People
|
Great bands + great barstaff + great sound + great people + great vibe = great venue
|
I used to drink here every friday when Rock was rock but now I feel old in there at 30. can't have a conversation at the bar as all the people with anything to say have moved on to oth er places and it's always full of kids. You don't have to be under 18 to be classed classed as a kid if your'e misbehaving after one sniff of the barmaids apron. Anyway as for plastic glasses I resent having to drink out of as I've never broken a glass in there in my life. I was well respected and new all the staff well, had done for years. Yes it does make the beer taste funny and the staff should use discretion when serving beer in plastic glasses as some people just don't like it. If they think people are going to do naughty things with them then give them plastic. Leave the glasses for serious sensible people. And yes I am perfectly well awre of the increased safety implications of plastic in the right hands not glass in the wrong hands. Barstaff Woodstock. Emma, Sam and Eric are the best in the area visit the pube if you are over 21 if there are enough of the right age group the kids and glass breaking idiots may just move on Leaving it for proper sensibl edrinkers like us who just want a good night out listening to some REAL Rock music not the nu metal rubbish perpetuated in there these days. If the peel wants to whack it's profits back up it should start catering to the proper drinkers again not the kids and students who sit there nursing the same half of lager all night between three of them making a nuisance of themselves and spoiling what could be a Rockin good night out for others. Nuff Said!
|
Great place. No charge on the door, beer prices weren't hiked like the could have been, all the girls were very fit and defintely earned their money. We're looking forward to going back next year when we play afc wimbledon.
|
I would love to respond to what Sloth has said (nice job there Sloth, keep your anonimity, you obviosly have the strength of your convictions)... We have licenced Doormen checking ID throughout Friday nights (and the rest of the week for that matter), and we STRICTLY only accept ID respected by the Met Police. If you have been abused by our clientele, please come and see us so we can deal better with this issue. We apologise on their behalf, but believe that all of our customers leave quickly and quietly as they make their way home or on to the next club. I would also like to question why "As a pub it is terrible"?? We have a large number of regulars who happily use us as a pub each and every night, and they are not teenagers, goths or metallers, but people from the local community. And as for our blue plastics, I'm glad you notice them as they are being used to ensure there are never any "glassing" incidents. The Met Police appreciate our efforts on this matter and would love it if all pubs in the local area changed to plastic too, so go us!! Oh, and as for the blacked out windows that other users have mentioned.... Our windows are boarded up to limit the sound level coming out of the venue, and have pretty pics on them now too!! We may appear closed, but we only do that to keep noise pollution in the local area down to a minimum. Thank you for your time, Sam
|
As a pub it is terrible - good music venue if they restricted it to adults. Would have no problems with this place if it complied with the law regarding serving alcohol to minors. Every Friday night at chucking out time the entire area is full of very drunk, very abusive and very young teenagers dressed in their Goth/metal outfits after getting smashed at the Peel. They dont even look 16 some of them, so there is no excuse really (and they definitely come from the Peel - thet are carrying the blue plastic pints that only the Peel uses locally).
Sloth - 15 Sep 2004 17:09 |
I always thought it had shut down because of the blacked out windows. Doh. Will come in for a matchday beer but don't look at me expecting to get me bits out, I'm only drinking x x
Jane - 17 Aug 2004 11:39 |
Not a pub for the upper class pub goer.
Spit and sawdust, Blacked out windows, Strippers round back, but most of all great live music.
But once you know this, there's nothing stopping you having a great night. I have to say I've enjoyed the music nights here. If you happen to see a band called joski billed. GO SEE THEM!
Bloorie :)
Steven - 7 Apr 2004 15:18 |
Don't expect to see many colourfully-dressed, clear-skinned, unpierced persons in there. Don't expect good beer either. Mind you, it's an improvement on 10-15 years ago - it was scummy.
DeviousDave - 16 Mar 2004 13:26 |
it's pretty cool place, i love the music and the people that go there. The bands are sooooo talented {some} and cheap drinks. I'm lovin it baby xxxxx
|
We bitch and moan about it sumtimes but in the end it's gotta be my favourite pub in k'ton. Too many great messy nites to tell u about here but i always go back 4 more. plus the best snakebite and blacks this side of the Thames!
Beef - 30 Nov 2003 19:10 |
Only go down on a friday. The Twang is great, Staff and DJ very friendly most people mind their business and enjoy the music and a Laugh. can get a bit hot and Smoky.
Alex - 31 Oct 2003 10:49 |
Great venue for live bands/watching strippers. Make sure you don't miss an unsigned band called :the fake: I think they are playing on the 25th Oct. They are the next big ting!
|
Great place!
Rob - 29 Jul 2003 14:31 |
The Girls are lovely. The Beer is Great. The Bar Manager is friendly. Perfect combination. The Beautiful Peel.
Edster - 2 Jul 2003 11:25 |
I cant wait for the new footie season to start, get myself down there in the front row, packet of pork scratchings, Fosters shandy (more lemonade than beer, please barman!) an easy route to the bogs so that when it's my round I can get there a bit sharpish to avoid getting them in, and more jugs than you can shake a stick at! "Keep smiling, make 'em look like you are enjoying it!"
Niall - 19 Jun 2003 17:07 |
Cant say I have any complaints , nice pint of fosters bag of crisps and a pair of hooters in me face. Nice
Tav - 17 Apr 2003 15:46 |
Have visited this boozer for gigs which where good!!! But the beer was a bit warm. Also went in the back room once, but couldn't see any nips for dry ice. May come back but are there any xtras available in the backroom?
Dave Bean - 4 Feb 2003 16:26 |
Just to let Darren know that we regularly serve up to 100 AFC Wimbledon supporters both before and after games, and this weekend the team were in too and had e very enjoyable evening.
Sam - the bar manager!! - 16 Dec 2002 12:56 |
Thanks Mystie. I take back the cheap insult, I was being a judgemental git. Please accept my apology.
Loz - 4 Nov 2002 11:43 |
Just wanted to correct the post from Loz re. the dancers at this pub: we're not "crack whores... minging strippers from the nearby estate", we're from a very well-respected central-London-based striptease agency, and we travel down to Kingston to do an honest evening's work in one of the best-run strip pubs on the circuit. If you have similar moral objections as Loz obviously has then you don't go there, but if you're more open minded and want to see erotic performance art from professional, ofetn stunning girls, this is the place.
Mystie - 4 Nov 2002 10:50 |
good if you like metal, but doesn't look too inviting for footy fans when AFC Wimbledon play at home.
Darren - 29 Oct 2002 16:54 |
The Robert Peel has historically been known for its minging strippers from the nearby estate, who come around begging with a bucket after each stomach-churning gynaecological exhibition. In the mid-1990s it then also became known to be the easiest place for teenies to get served. However the management have performed a miracle, providing perfect material for a Marketing degree dissertation. Since then, they have transformed the Peel brand into one of the best music venues in outer London. While the crack whores still wiggle their curtains in the back room, the main venue pumps out metal of various sorts every night of the week. Still largely a pub for 18-21s in the front bar or perverts in the back, this pub will doubtless reinvent itself again if nu-metal dies a horrible death.
