Found this pub quite amusing listening to the locals bantering on.

I loved the fact that fisherman and dockers were walking around the pub with all there gear on too.

Found it to be a little expensive though which I thought was odd.

8/10

This pub has had a makeover since being purchased by local lad and England rugby star Jack Nowell... I loved the place; Proper locals pub, but friendly and welcoming... Within 5 minutes we were in deep conversation with Perry, Newlyns (self proclaimed) finest fisherman... I'm sure the reputation of hellraising is all true, and would have loved to have had a few nights in here if I had been born down this way, but on the other hand that's what makes a great pub... 3 beers, Tribute, London Pride and Doom bar, plus Rollling Apple cider... Definitely pop in and have a few if your down this way...

Been knocked into one and the SKY TV rep went years ago. The Stringbag as we knew it is a nice little pub and the days of loads of drunken fisherman brawling are a thing of the past. Mostly the majority of fishermen don't live in Newlyn and have to drive home and the practice of being paid in the pub toilet ceased years ago too!!!

I was aware of the Swordfishs reputation and paid it a visit more out of curiosity than anything else. From our conversations in other pubs in the area, the locals seem rather bemused at the thought of it being labelled as one of Britains toughest pubs as depicted on Sky TV. The building itself a typical old harbourside inn and is actually quite quaint from the outside. The interior is nothing special but nothing particularly ropey either. Long and narrow, the pub is divided into 2 distinct areas, the main bar and a pool room to the rear. The main bar is quite basic with bare floors and quite plain dcor but showing few, if any, signs of neglect or rough treatment. Several interesting black and white photos of the local harbour area and old fishermen are neatly displayed on the walls. 2 ales available, Doom Bar and Courage Best which were of decent enough quality although prices were a bit higher than I would have expected. As for the ambience which seems to be pubs big question mark, I was there on an early Friday night and the place wasnt particularly busy but whilst the music was a bit loud (but not overbearingly so), the customer base seemed to be good natured and well behaved although it was clear that some (mainly the women) were certainly half way to inebriation. The staff were polite and despite wandering round the pub and being fairly obviously not a local, I didnt feel intimidated or threatened in any way. I dare say the place does have its moments, not unlike any other pub, but whilst it wouldnt win any prizes as the best pub in town, I certainly didnt find anything untoward that that would warrant giving the place a wide berth, unless you worked for Sky that is!

totally agree with the last review, a warm welcome, great pint of Doom Bar, and lots of great local character!
Thanks!

Good fun pub - Image of ones of Britains toughest pubs is honestly rubbish - Full of local character and characters worth a visit

Recently featured on Sky One's "toughest Pubs" documentary. I have to say the last time I was in there - and it was a couple of years ago mind - I found it to be okay. A little threadbare around the edges but nothing out of the ordinary. Then again I didn't tell anyone I worked for D***A........

Beer was ok, nothing more, nothing less.
