A proper old-school "wet" pub with no food offering. Yes, it's a tad dated and shabby but so what when there's such a good selection of beer for sale? Regular ales are Ramsbury's Bitter and one from Wye Valley (Golden Ale yesterday). I tried pints of Keystone's VPA (£3.60 per pint) and Hook Norton's Playing Hooky (£3) which were both in very good condition - also on sale were Church Hanbrewery's Bluenette, White Horse's Village Idiot, Vale of Glamorgan's Dark Matter and Colchester's Red Diesel (last 3 all £3.50). Great place for a drink after doing the outstanding 9 mile Wychwood Forest circular walk.

Still being a good village local with decent ales.

Still an excellent 'community' local with decent ale.

A superb place, well worth a visit in its own right. At least 6-8 aleas on pump when I went, with several from newer local breweries like XT (on fine form). Good vibe in there too. Only minor negative would be the courtyard which was a bit tatty with rusting furniture and junk out there.

McRoyal says s/he "could move here just for the pub" - I won't pretend I did exactly that but it was one of the major factors! Having lived in the pub-free wasteland of Willesden for a year a few trips out to Chalrbury, including a few visits to the Rose & Crown, convinced me that this was the place to be, and 18 months later the pub is my weekly regular and in-betweener whenever there's a free moment for a pint.
Excellent atmosphere, a very good and ever-changing range of beers, attention to detail and welcome (yes to a handle glass if you like, yes bring in your food if you ask) , and just one of those pubs you always wished you had on your doorstep. Great for all types of drinker, all ages and types of people, and a thriving live music venue to boot. Super stuff.
Considering that there is a very good pub (The Bull) between my house and the R&C, and another great one 100m down the road (the Three Horseshoes), the fact that I never stray from the Rose & Crown perhaps says it all. A brilliant pub.

Another visit - another fine selection of beer and rolls in a great pub in a pleasant little Costwold village. What more do you need - I could move here just for the pub but I don't really want to end up as a London/Oxford bound rail commuter.

Didn't remember much from first visit 10 years ago, but as described below a fantastic, friendly boozer.

Another visit to this first class pub and as before I was not disappointed. Good selection of beers from local (and not so local) brewers - all at reasonable prices. A selection of rolls to soak up the ale and of course it is open all day!! I had Ramsbury Bitter followed by a hoppy beer from Wentworth Brewery. Very friendly staff and the music was brilliant - proper R&B which came from a tape of a pub local who acts as a DJ for a radio station in Kansas,USA - great stuff. Lots of local CAMRA newsletters to read and really just a faultless boozer!! Highly recommended and as I have said before well worth the walk up the hill from the station (go via the church - it's the nicest route).

Fantastic wet sales pub.

Wow, what a super pub. Met a guy in Germany on a steam trip just before Christmas who said this was his local and we should visit it. Took us a few months but well worth the effort. Excellent beers, mostly micros, and all in super condition. Very friendly; locals came and chatted with us. Big bonus is the station in the village with direct trains from London. Beer fest on the cricket green in July

Another good friendly pub with good beer. The food is minimal but the rolls they had were only 1 and handy to 'soak up' the beer.

A great pub with consitently good beer and friendly locals. A pleasant surprise to find it open all day but thankful it was. Well worth the walk up from the station and a very enjoable couple opf pints between trains (try the Oxfordshire Day Ranger ticket which gives open access between Reading; Moreton-in-Marsh;Banbury ; Oxford and Bicester. Great value and some good pubs en route). Anyway the R&C is highly recommeded.

Just like pubs used to be ! Manages to be a locals pub, and very friendly to visitor as well as a magnet for real-ale drinkers with six changing beers available. GBG regular. Dont count on anything but the most minimal food, but I'm told they are relaxed about you eating your own picnic in the garden.

beer is always good. a very good place for a drink. some good quality live music. the best charlbury pub
|
A serious beer drinkers haven, but nothing much to eat if you want food. Always friendly and full of friendly characters. My local!!
|
What a fantastic pub, very well kept ale, good service and a great clientele one not to be missed.
|
Plenty of real ale as mentioned by other posters. Beer quality is obviously taken very seriously, with all ales in excellent condition from start of service. A comfortable, drinkers pub, well located in the village centre.
|
Fantastic pub, now with 7 hand pumps offering a constantly changing range of Real Ale, ( managed to try 10 different ales over the weekend). The landlord really seems to care about the beer. The bonus of a bar billiards table out the back.
|
Definitely an excellent pub, especially for real ale lovers.
|
Top pub - excellent beer and cider, friendly staff, everyone welcome. Best drinkers' pub for miles around.

Small Cotswold town pub. Open all day, @6 real ales, no food. North Oxon Camera pub of the year again (deservedly). I doesn't get much better than this! Charlbury is easily reached by rail and well worth a visit on it's own
