A proper old-school "wet" pub with no food offering. Yes, it's a tad dated and shabby but so what when there's such a good selection of beer for sale? Regular ales are Ramsbury's Bitter and one from Wye Valley (Golden Ale yesterday). I tried pints of Keystone's VPA (£3.60 per pint) and Hook Norton's Playing Hooky (£3) which were both in very good condition - also on sale were Church Hanbrewery's Bluenette, White Horse's Village Idiot, Vale of Glamorgan's Dark Matter and Colchester's Red Diesel (last 3 all £3.50). Great place for a drink after doing the outstanding 9 mile Wychwood Forest circular walk. paul_d102 - 17 Apr 2017 12:42 |
Still being a good village local with decent ales. Snarling_Mallard - 8 May 2016 21:12 |
Still an excellent 'community' local with decent ale. anonymous - 8 Aug 2012 19:19 |
A superb place, well worth a visit in its own right. At least 6-8 aleas on pump when I went, with several from newer local breweries like XT (on fine form). Good vibe in there too. Only minor negative would be the courtyard which was a bit tatty with rusting furniture and junk out there. OldRogue - 12 Jun 2012 13:19 |
McRoyal says s/he "could move here just for the pub" - I won't pretend I did exactly that but it was one of the major factors! Having lived in the pub-free wasteland of Willesden for a year a few trips out to Chalrbury, including a few visits to the Rose & Crown, convinced me that this was the place to be, and 18 months later the pub is my weekly regular and in-betweener whenever there's a free moment for a pint. Excellent atmosphere, a very good and ever-changing range of beers, attention to detail and welcome (yes to a handle glass if you like, yes bring in your food if you ask) , and just one of those pubs you always wished you had on your doorstep. Great for all types of drinker, all ages and types of people, and a thriving live music venue to boot. Super stuff. Considering that there is a very good pub (The Bull) between my house and the R&C, and another great one 100m down the road (the Three Horseshoes), the fact that I never stray from the Rose & Crown perhaps says it all. A brilliant pub. sbjones - 4 May 2012 19:50 |
