|
don't forget the quiz next Thursday (October 18) Landlord's challenge: Keggheads take on all comers. Its gonna be a barrel load of fun.

Every day a different drama. lol

Still the best Real Ale pub in Slough
|
Not too sure what the previous poster was referring to as this pub is currently undergoing a fresh lease of life with well kept Real Ales, friendly bar staff, football on the big screen, good banter over the bar and even fresh crusty rolls on a good night.
Another good crack last night with top notch ESB, friendly chat with the locals and bubbly blond behind the bar . Fortunately, though Leonard doesn't work every night so hopefully we'll have the lovely Kate or Julie back behinfd the jump tonight. LOL
|
Oh dear Fullers, how can you let your brand name be sullied by being attached to this pub? I am a major fan of your beers and most of your pubs, but this is beyond belief. It gets my 2 rating simply for stocking ESB
|
For the regulars I was thinking we could get a group together to go to Thorpe Park for the day. If anyone interested let's try and get it sorted out!More of a lads day out for those not scared of going on any rides!
|
Right, Back to make a couple of comments. It's a shame most of the regulars do not comment on here as it would give a better idea of what they thought of the Wheatsheaf.
I've got to say that Stuart had been amazing in sorting out the beer festival and is one of the regulars who is dam keen on giving people a wide choice of beers and lagers to supple. Well the last one went down a storm. If you missed it well I hope you will look forward to the next one in a few months time.
As for the past couple of comments well all I can say is this. having th the same regulars in here is great. i can walk in with family or friends and feel relaxed and talk to everyone. as for the comments about those who should not be allowed in other pubs well I'm against that as every person I know in the Wheatsheaf I could class as a friend.
This site is for people looking for a pub- well if your reading this why don't you just give the Wheatsheaf a chance. Come in one day, say your new here and ask questions because every person in that pub will tell you you would be more than welcome. How many other pubs could you walk into and not end up having a great chat with someone you had never known before??
I wish I could be there more but I can't. I'm married and have children but one things is for sure it's my local and I'm proud of it. The bar staff are great. The punters are really relaxed and friendly and for one there is never any trouble in the pub! So you can relax!

Decent Fullers pub thats wasted in Slough. Think its fair to say Sloughs never been the greatest place for boozers, I went on a recent pub crawl to bring back some old memories having gone to school in nearby Langley. Jesus whats happened?,nearly every pub has shut or has been built on, a few years back Slough was getting, dare I say it quite lively, bars /pubs springing up everywhere now its a desolate wasteland for drinkers, you can almost see the tumbleweed blowing down the high street. Chicagos, Yates, The Floral, Goose, Pied Horse all gone to name but a few and I could go on and on, I know they`re not everyones cup of tea but at least you could get a drink. Dont Poles drink in pubs??
|
Somewhat ambivalent here. The ales are impeccable. The majority of the customers are incapable of appreciating a good beer and prefer the blandest lagers however. You do get some moronic long standing regulars in this pub whose presence would not be tolerated in other establishments. The legacy of blatant drug taking in this pub in the past. Most of the morons are gone but a few remain. They're pretty harmless. This pub's main drawback is that it is in Slough.

Thanks Strongbow Kid for your kind comments on my thoughts on the Wheatsheaf.
Look for those who are looking to pop into the Wheatsheaf for a quick drink or a new local. Give it a try, ask to speak to Martin or even say to the locals hey I'm new here, I know people will be happy to say hello.
I've just come back from having a couple of pints - I WOULD HAVE STAYED LONGER BUT THE WIFE WOULD HIT THE ROOF!
By the way if your looking to have a party - Martin and the team will be more than happy to offer you help here so have a word.
As I said before pop in, say hello or just enjoy the banter in the bar. You will find people talking football, rugby, politics and a whole range of subjects that you will be able to offer you view point on. cheers, John (The Dog)

id 2nd everything that pintofhsb has said. best pub in the town by a country mile the pride and esb are always in tip top condition, and now the landlordoffers a continuing range of fullers seasonal beers as a guest (id still like to see fullers let him off the leash so that we can get more variety of guest in there) theres something for everyone. the bottled beers and even more depth to the beer available, and there really is a nice whiskey selection too. with ambitious plans from the landlord (with the regulars chipping in) too expand the choice of beers available in the now regular 3 beer festivals a year, the place can only go from strength to strength. i'll be pushing my local branch of CAMRA very hard to get the pub recognised in the guide, as its only hindrance is its tie to fullers limiting the choice.
but if your looking for a great pint in great company, you wont go far wrong with this place
|
Right where do I start. This is a great pub, no joke. All the regulars are just that -regular guys that enjoy the beer or lager and the company of Martin the Manager. It has it's regular clients, faces you will see on a daily basis afternoon or evening. Weekend's the Wheatsheaf is busier with many regular faces and friends.
Is it a friendly pub? Oh yes and once you get to know the guys and gals there will be more than happy to say hello and have a chat.
As for problems with the pub and punters - well that was many many years ago. This is a great place to meet friends or to just have a quiet drink.
I'm a family guy and I can assure you I would not be drinking in a spit and sawdust pub. 2010 saw some serious graft done to the inside of the pub and new toilets and seating with new carpets in the bar.
As for the beer - well don't just take my word for it - try it yourself. The staff really do go out there way to make sure you have a decent pint and if you don't let them know and they will get you another.
The pub also does alot for charity - alot for cancer and the armed forces. In the summer you will no doubt find plenty of barbacues and they are free!
Over the past 4 years the Wheatsheaf has become a great pub to be in. In the last 5 years there has never been any trouble, fights etc. Friday night will offer you the opportunity to listen to some live bands. Wednesday is Steak Night and that's a bargin!
Hope to see you in there sometime - Just say John sent you - Oh yes but there are quite a few John's, no worries, we are all friendly. On your own, someone will no doubt be happy to chat or leave you be.
Thought I should add: Sandwiches and hot food available and some great drams behind the bar too!
|
Further to my earlier post, I was confronted on my last visit to the pub with the sight of the previously dreadlocked white barman, with an absolutely clean-shaven pate. Totally scalped! Strangely, no sign of the Mohican...
|
Alenut's right (whoever he/she is ?) this is a good pub. Cask Marque signs now back on the pumps, and the food's excellent. The ESB and London Pride are top notch, and there's plenty of lagers for the 'lads'. Live music every Friday night, a good quiz on a Thursday, and the crib league starts again soon on Monday nights (we still need 2 new players, though.) Best barmaids in Slough, plus the only white barman with dreadlocks, and the only singing Mohican. Well worth a visit !!!!!
|
Up for sale....again ! This is a good pub. What's happening ?
|
new folk behind the bar, but good beer, chirpy barmaids, and best of all, homemade cheese rolls!
|
Good luck to the new owners. Lets hope they don't undo the good work of the previous landlords and let the dregs back in ! Rumour has it, it's run by the same family as the Queen of england. Please not another irish pub. Time will tell.
|
THIS PUB IS OPEN AND IS ROCKING!!! COME ON DOWN AND ENJOY THE GREAT ATMOSPHERE... LIVE MUSIC EVERY FRIDAY..
|
This is the best pub in town the new owners rock... They had a great band on Fri night and everyone was in great spirits... Finger Buffet served and free shots off Sambucca what a great night. I am defo going down again this weekend.... Keep ip the good work..
|
Shut ?
This place has been in darkness for the last 3 weeks. Come on Fullers help the managers out. The place is obviously struggling. The pub has been great for the last 2 1/2 years since the druggies were kicked out. Nice pub, great beer.
Fullers.. Sort it out !!!
|
This place is bigger than it looks from outside. Quite basic boozer but my mate and I often pop in here because the Pride is always unbelievably good. Live music sometimes - we saw a couple of blokes with guitars recently, no idea of name but definitely cut above your average pub act. Enclosed garden at rear; TVs etc. Def. worth checkinng out.
anonymous - 12 Nov 2007 21:33 |
over priced beer but ok apart from that , much better since the local druggies moved on
|
GREAT PUB. FRIENDLY COUPLE.GREAT BEER.NO MORE COKED UP RIFF RAFF.THE PUBS GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH.
funky - 22 Apr 2007 14:50 |
Following on from Tim and Debby's sterling work in cleaning up the pub, and making it suitable for the local community again, Andy, and Trish are now reaping some of the benefits. Renowned throughout town, for its excellent Real Ales, fine food, and lively banter, this pub is now definitely back on the map. (even the crib team's top of the league!) Live Bands some Friday nights, and a thriving quiz on a Thursday, all add to the atmosphere. Sadly, they don't sell cheese rolls behind the bar, otherwise, it'd be pretty much, 'perfect'???
anonymous - 18 Apr 2007 16:43 |
Andy and Trish have done a great job since they taken over. Themed nights, Live bands now and then great food reasonable priced, massive portions. Well worth a visit

Always a good pint in a nice clean pub . Good luck in the next place Mr Exlandlord, hope the new lot maintain the standard !
|
Of course I meant St. George!! On the river!!
Just leaves me to say thanks once again to all the regulars and the very best of wishes to the new landlord and landlady, Andy and Trisha.
|
Congratulations to the ex landlord for defending his former pub so vigorously. I think he's put the previous contributor soundly in his place.
but just to put the matter straight, I'd like to clarify the meaning of his final sentance. I think he means that St G. was the limp-wristed one.Cetrainly not my goodself... Just ask the last three barmaids ???
Good on yer mate. and may the crib team do EVEN better next season!!! (after all, we only have to overtake about twenty eight teams, and we'll be top of the league !!)
|
the exlandlord gives a good justification for takin off chiswick and discovery. that's the problem with pubs in grim areas like slough.
anonymous - 25 Jun 2006 12:44 |
Anonymous 9/6/06. As the ex landlord of this establishment I would like to correct you on a few matters. The number of beers taken off the pumps was three. Chiswick and Discovery. Purely because they didn't sell. When beers cost as much as they do and you're sending 2/3rd's back it does not make good business sense to keep on flogging a dead horse. The third beer to be taken off was Grolsch. Personally only one 'wife beater' is necessary on the pumps. I can assure you the cask beers were in excellent condition. They were allowed to rest for 72 hours before going on at the pumps and all sold within 72 hours. The only reason we were not in the good beer guide for 2006 is that we took over during cross publication and we ourselves could not take the credit for another landlords beer quality, however I have been recognised for keeping good beer and The Wheatsheaf will be in the 2007 edition. The menu had great variety from healthy to traditional pub grub and was always bought in fresh and cooked on the day. There was never any pre- packaged food bought in. We NEVER received any complaints. In respect to the time wait. We offered a phone through service for companies to minimise their waiting time. Most however chose to ignore this service, turn up mob handed during the busy period, order their food and then set in to their weekly ritual of being extremley rude and demanding why they hadn't been served their food within 10 minutes. Typical university people. Plenty of brains sadly lacking in common sense and manners. If people want fast food MacDonalds is in the High St. Not that far to walk even for Amazon! Instead of hiding behind a computer to air your views I suggest you muster the courage to talk to people direct because if these matters are not addressed how can they be corrected! As people are aware we took over a rather colourful pub. We worked hard to turn this around and gave back a community a great pub. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the regulars for their loyalty and custom. We have made some great new friends and we hope your heads was as sore as ours after our leaving do. And to you Suity our steadfast St.George (he was a poof you know) a friend for life, no doubt. give me a call ref crib drink.

As someone who drops into the pub, from time to time, I was quite surprised to see the latest 'nosedive' comments appear on your notice board this week.
I have always found the food, in the Wheatsheaf to be well cooked, and the beers of good quality. Whilst its true that 'Chiswick' has been taken off, due to poor sales, you'll find this to be the case in most pubs where it was previously served, e.g Vansittaert Arms, and White Horse, so you can't really complain in that respect.
I'm also rather surprised to read the comment about poor service, as I have never found this to be the case, and have always found both landlord, and landlady to be courteous, and quick to serve, booth the ale, and the food.
But at least we can agree on one thing. Its good to see the bar billiard table come in, and that hideous tent outside, disappear.
Don't know if the previous contributor still visits the pub, but if they do, I'd rather like to share a pint with them, one day, and compare notes. Clearly, we have totally different views about this pub, and I'd quite like to find out why...?????
|
I really don't know what the previous comments are on about. This pub has nose dived spectacularly since the new management took over. My collegues and I used to go to this pub 3 times a week at least at lunch time and enjoy the wonderful beer and homemade food. Since the new management took over the number of different beers available has halved and is not always in good condition. This is the first year this pub has not been in the good beer guide and I can see why. The food is poor, the chef seeming to struggle with anything that doesn't involve a deep fat fryer. The service at lunchtimes is ridiculously slow it usually take about 20mins to get a drink even though its relatively empty. The manager, when he is in at lunchtime seems more interested in standing on the public side of the bar having a fag than helping to serve people. The only good thing that the new management have managed to do is put a bar billiards table in and get rid of the tent outside.

Since taking over Tim and Debs have worked incredibly hard to turn this pub round and the fruits of their labour are starting to show. Fantastic food all through the week and the Sunday Roasts are the best for miles. The beers still great with all the fullers range and always a guest ale on. The unruly element have been dispensed with and its now a truly great pub to spend an evening in.
anonymous - 8 Nov 2005 11:51 |
Debbie and Tim now serve hot food all day, in rssponse to customer demand, and the menu is both attractive and extensive, with the Debbie's Shepherd's pie and Barbecue rib, particularly recommended .
And the high quality of the beer, across the Fullers range has now been officially recognised and rewarded, by the award of the prestigious Cask Marque for all of Tim's beers.
The addition of a bar billiards table, and the success of the Monday night crib team in the local league (Division 3) have all aded to the friendly atmosphere, at the Wheatsheaf.
And its good to see so many of the local residents popping in for lunch again, during the week. now that they feel that the pub, is rightly 'back on the map'!!
|
Since taking over in the Spring, Tim and Debbie have worked hard to turn the Wheatsheaf into a friendly, but busy pub, for local people to enjoy.Together with a thriving quiz night on Thursday, and a busy live music night on Saturday, Tim is keen to set up a number of pub teams to join local leagues, and is already looking for crib players to join up, and help him win Division 3 next year !!
Sunday lunches are very popular here, and the extensive range of 'substantial' quality sandwiches served during the rest of the week, are a meal in themselves.
Now what about the beer....
A significant reduction in prices across the board, has brought prices much more in line with other pubs in the area, whilst the quality of the ale still remains very high.
Chiswick (2 a pint), London Pride, and ESB together with guest ales, means that the choice is always good too, and there's also Carling, and Carlsberg for the lager drinker off course.
Its 25's and over, here, so there's never any trouble, but occasional events, such as race nights and the like mean that there's still plenty of excitement !!!
But don't just take my word for it, come and see for yourself
anonymous - 27 Jul 2005 11:37 |
Adding to the earlier comments, the new management have taken time to find their feet, they have a good menu again (over 50 varieties of sandwich) and have turned the pub around. Its no longer aggressive in the evenings, its no longer used by an unruly element and the beer garden is now open at the back replacing the claustrophobic marquee that was there previously. Worth giving it a new try if you haven't been there for a while.
anonymous - 2 Jun 2005 17:54 |
This was a truely brilliant pub with excellent food and beer however the management has changed and the service seems to have gone completly to pot. The beer is still good but getting served is another matter altogether. The new landlord appears to have sacked all the original staff and now runs the place on a skeleton crew. Therefore it takes a very long time to get served and my friends and I frequently give up waiting. The food though still reasonable is about a third of the menu of the previous owners and due to the fact that fewer people can get served less is made so they tend to run out of things quite regularly.

This pub has great food and perfect beer (I speak from experience of many a Fullers pub.)It is a great place to go to during th eday and early evening but can get aggresive during the evening.

changes from friendly in the day to quite aggresive in the evening.
