Nice outside area in the summer. Very good prices.
The barmaid seemed a bit odd last time I went in - seriously slow. Also, it's nowt special inside.

An excellent, characterful multi-roomed country pub with well-kept, good-value beer. Very pleasant beer garden for the occasional sunny day.

The pub is for locals and has character. But why were we told on Friday - 'no dogs allowed' as soon as we entered? A country pub where you can't take your dog - (in at least one room) seemed very strange to me. Especially as it's not exactly newly decorated and posh inside. I would have thought they'd have welcomed the custom as I'm sure there are plenty of dog walkers who would go there as part of the walk on the canal Very disappointed.

Cheap, probably the best prices in town, Samuel Smiths bitter as of August 2008 is 1.56 a pint and a decent pint too. The pub has the character of a bygone era (similar to the Romper, old wilmslow road nr Manchester Airport before it was lovingly commercially trashed)it is many frequented by locals or visitors that drive due to its remote location, although their is a warm welcome to all. Thier is a large car park and a good size garden with 4 rooms and plenty of seating/tables to go around even on a busy evening. Beware this pub still closes at 10.30pm on a sunday and bank holidays.

I've not been in for a while- the pub has changed hands!! (probably a while ago). Bitter tastes a lot better than before (it used to have an aftertaste...). New menus & good service. Lots of nice nooks and crannies to sit in.

A great local. The staff were brilliant, they ran the place like a well oiled machine. Locals friendly. Beer good. Food adequate - it's certainly no gastro pub, but does grub to an old school standard - nice puddings with custard

Fab pub, lovely friendly LOCALS!!! Always aim to please.. Fantastic bar Staff very accomadating..Take umbridge with the comment about the chef!! Great guy who serves excellent food and washes his hair every day!!! Would recommend giving locals a nudge at the bar if you can't get served they won't mind...Love the atmosphere the drink and the food!! Bar persons at weekend are an extra delight full of of fun and high Jinx. If you've not already been, please go you will recieve a very friendly reception whatever age you are!!!

Lovely pub with some great regulars and locals. The new landlady/landlord have not provided facilities for smokers though. Don't treat them like 2nd Class Citizens, they bring in a lot of revenue to pubs!!

went to the vine inn rcently.me and my wife decided to try out the food.unfortunatly we didn't find it upto our normal standard,we did complain and to are amazement when the head shef came out to see what the problem was he was very rude and wasn't at all interested in what we had to say.I have to say he was a rather large fellow with jet black greasy hair and a i think they call it a goaty beard,my wife was quite intimidated by this rude man.Needless to say we left and certainly will not be returning.

Massive improvement.... but they no longer do a 'Lamb Henry'.... gutted. That was a delight after a long walk.
The cig smoke has gone but in hindsight i may have been too critical... at least it masked the smell of certain customers who still clutter around the bar like the unfriendly, unhealthy looking dregs they are.

This pub has improved massively for two reasons.
1.The smoking ban. This was a notoriously smokey pub with low ceilings. As previously stated most smokers used to hog the bar. The difference is just amazing and its an absolute pleasure to sit in a quaint country pub without thick smoke and your clothes stinking when you leave. 2.The departure of the landlord called Alistair. (see below)

Gonna stick my neck out.......
avoid this pub. Went here today (26th June) and the pub had 7 people in it. However, all these people were smoking and sat on stools at the bar!!!! They had the entire pub to choose from.... but they stayed at the bar and would'nt move for customers.
My dad's from Eccles and cant be bothered with such people so he told them to 'shift their arses' or he'd shift them. I calmed the situation down and we walked out. For the record he would have battered all 7 of the decrepid bumpkins. Went to the Rope and Anchor. Paid 20p more for cask ale but it was airy, smoke free, friendly and not full of really unhealthy looking bumpkins.
Written to Sam Smiths in Tadcaster demanding action.

Totally agree with Stretfordlad. Just to reiterate, the smokers who hog the Bar are not from the local area. They have just claimed the place and appear to everyone as locals.
Last weekend I attempted to get served in the only gap between them and some clown lit a pipe and smoked me out. Bring on the smoking ban, not long now!

I like the beer garden in this pub and spend many sundays with The Times and a pint. However, what really lets this place down is the legion of chain smoking unfriendly 'locals' who sit at the bar, drinking very slowly, never without some cheap fag in their mouth. Its a small bar and its silly to let 5 locals sit at it preventing other people from being served. og the 12ft of bar at least 6ft is taken by territorial, rude, spend thrift, no hopers. I cant wait to see what happens when the smoking ban comes in. The landlord has to take some responsibilty. Why does he allow then to dominate this pub? He must make a tidy sum out of non-locals.

Pub has gone downhill over the last couple of years since attack on previous manager. Beer and food still good and cheap, leaving this a generally good pub to visit

Very cliquey, landlord served someone he knew over my shoulder who clearly arrived after me. The impression is that this is a locals pub but in fact the locals who sit at the bar and dont move for you to get served are largely from a council estate a mile or two away. (nothing wrong with that, but its true)
The beer is good but the food is very average.

Reminded me why everyone always used to laugh at food in British pubs! School dinners with beer, really poor. good to see the other reviews all mention how cheap it is, there's a reason for that it's dark, dinghy & depressing, come on do you just go out because it's cheap?

This pub should have got a good review - the beer's good, the prices are excellent and it's in a nice neighbourhood. However, the food is hit and miss and I don't mean poor quality (it's excellent) the only problem is it's hit and miss whether they choose to be serving or not, I've been 3 times and only once were they serving food, that wouldn't necessarily be a problem, but they don't say when they plan to stop serving and they change the time they stop. First time I had this problem, it was a sunday and they stopped at 8pm (made a bit more annoying when the bar cleared of serving staff a good 15 minutes before this time - and their clocks run a fair bit faster the GMT/BST), so I visited 2 weeks later again on a sunday, cunningly I thought to eat at 5pm thinking this gave me a good few hours, however this time they stopped serving at 3.

Never tire of this proper pub. Good food, good ale and a great place to feel you are in the country, yet its only a short drive from Altrincham. Particularly handy for refreshment once you have spent a hard days fishing across the road at Manor Farm.

I've been a lot over the years. VERY cheap and the food is consistently good. Sunday roasts are great. There's a garden out the back which is good as it's a bit pokey inside: great in Summer but a bit damp in Winter. They're tolerant of kids and good behind the bar (I especially like the po-faced barman with his no-nonsense attitude). There's a bookcase of 50p novels if you're on your own too!!

I have been going to this for 18 years. You always get a friendly welcome. The food is good and is chosen from a blackboard. It is not from a 'plastic menu'. The beer - Sam Smiths - is the best in the area and very good value at 1.26 per pint

An excellent pub and one I visit regularly. Fine selection of homemeade foods and vegetarian options. Steak and Ale pie made with Samuel Smiths is the best I've tasted in any pub. Ideal for an intimate meal or a family dinner. Has an extensive beer garden in which you can eat weather permitting.
|
You'd have to take the car to this one, although if someone's willing to drive there's half a dozen country pubs in this area that are worth a visit. Traditional pub fare rather than the standard "chain" menus and reasonable beer. For location reasons,a real locals pub but very friendly and especially nice in the summer in the beer garden.

Great little pub. Fantastic grub in a nice atmosphere, and a great pint of Samuel Smith's bitter. It's a bit out of the way though. A refreshing lack of numpties and muppets.
