Surprisingly busy on a sunny late Wednesday afternoon with family groups and dogs in abundance which I accept will not appeal to some but it's a spacious building split into a number of smaller areas and lots of outdoor seating. I wasn't eating but the menu appeared to be reasonably priced and offering the usual pub classics with plenty of takers. There was a good selection of ales and different styles on tap and my choice of Cross Bay Sunset 4.2% was very refreshing particularly as I was only charged £2.40. The average price in my neck of the woods 200 miles south is currently around £3.80. I only found the place in passing having turned off the M6 southbound onto the A6 to avoid holdups ahead. Along this stretch between junctions 33 and 32 there were other decent-looking pubs and garden centres etc so ideal for a break to avoid being fleeced by motorway services. In summary well worth a visit particularly for families with children in tow although there's enough space for everyone.

One of those places you either love or hate.
As previous people have commented this pub can suffer from it's popularity. Can get full to bursting often - particularly if the sun is out etc.
Have actually started visiting more often recently because the ales are bang on form. Usually 8-10 ales on - Thwaites Wainwright, Moorhouses PendleWitch, Black Sheep are the usual Regular beers with guests from far and wide also appearing.
Decent pub grub is on offer. The Mussels washed down with a few pints are recommended.
Usually "special" events take place monthly - Oyster Festival In September, A Hallowen Octobier Fest etc.
Opens late most nights I think - was in the other Sunday night and time passed us by. At 2315 thinking we had missed last orders, were told they were open until at least 0100!!!

This place can suffer from its own popularity. But, it's a good place for a feed and there are several real ales available. Nice location. You're not made to feel bad if the kids are being noisy. Good value. Don't bother with Guy's round the corner. It was busy when we took our family there and it was rubbish.

this is one of my favourite pubs and if I lived nearer (come from Bolton) I'd be in there every night. The selection of real ales is awesome and the guy behind the bar knows about them and can discuss them with you. When I've eaten in there, the food has been good too. The atmosphere is excellent, even when very busy. What more can you say - an excellent place to be.

I have been to Owd Nell's numerous times during the day and also in the evening with my friends who live in Bilsborrow and also my children who love the place. The beer selection is excellent, as is the food and atmosphere. You are always made to feel welcome and no matter how crowded it is, the atmosphere is always friendly. The waitresses and bar staff work exceedingly hard to make sure everyone gets what they ordered and in very good time and spirits. I can't wait to go back on Saturday night!

From New York- visited friends in Preston in June '03 and went to Owd Nell's twice. Food was great and the portions were huge. Pleasant, attentive staff. I hope to go back someday.

Great location - can get very busy at times so best to book a table before you go. Staff can be a bit odd. Food usually first class but the only time I had a problem was when I ordered something different and didn't like it. The waiter spotted this and offered to change my meal to something else, which I did!

the food has been served frozen three times I have visited over the last four years. On new years eve 2001 my group waited four hours to be served a six course meal that actually only consisted of three courses. Guy's and old nells are far overrated and the pub is full of idiots

Fantastic pub just on the canal. Excellent food, especially the sweet trolley! Very nice surroundings. Has restaurant as well, plus hotel accommodation in the attached "village" - "Guy's Thatched Hamlet". Luxury rooms have jacuzzis!!
