Caledonian Sample Room, Edinburghback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
The Caley Sample Room was my second pub of my 2 day Edinburgh crawl, following the Spylaw Tavern (not listed on here). For some reason I was expecting a brewery tap for the Caledonian brewery. But this is a modern bar with a good selection of ales from several breweries.- East London Foundation Bitter, Captain Ozturk 40 Yard Screamer IPA, Edinbrew Industrial, Cromarty Happy Chappy & Atlantic Drift, Highland Jack Flag & Tempest White Light. No real cider was on offer though. A good pub not far from Tynecastle football ground.

A bit large and modern for a "brewery tap" and very popular with the young trendies but not bad for all that. Plenty of ales on offer, as you would expect, and those sampled were in good condition. I got the impression of a few pretensions foodwise, with prices to match, but plenty of customers were eating and I did not so food must be OK.

Visited with friends for a meal who told us that this was a fine Gastro-Pub which had me on my guard straight away. However, the food was very good, with robustly sized portions served. Six ales on including Arran AB and a fine selection of 20 plus bottled beers from which i also tried Black Isle Porter. A good time was had by all.

Yeah, has changed quite a lot since the old Caley. I liked the old place, but the new one is nice too. As has been said, there's not too many decent places around here: we're on Robertson Avenue, and the Caley is the nearest nice pub for us.
Food is tasty and hearty; a little fancy for my tastes. Wine selection is good if a little expensive, beers are decent as well.

The comments so far are for the original pub. It's now an upmarket "All Bar One" stylee. Owned by the The guy who has the Cambridge (I think?). Friendly staff, good selection of wine and food reliable. It's in afairly baren area for pubs so busy.

Quality ales and staff who know how to pour a pint. Excellent traditional food at low prices. Very much like a pub of yesteryear.Always my first call before the rugby.

I liked this pub. The barmaid was welcoming, the punters seemed honest friendly folk, and there was a bit of a drunken singalong. What more could you ask for?

Quite large single room pub, with differerent traditional seating areas. Friendly staff who know how to pull a pint of real ale - particularly good Deuchars IPA to be had there. Absolutely hooching at weekends, as it is not only a Scotland Rugby Pub, but very much a Heart of Midlothian footie pub - fantastic!
